L.J. Smith injured; Dawk wants contact

POSTED: Sunday, August 2, 2009, 11:24 AM

Not at camp today, but some other links to pass along:

** Former Eagles tight end L.J. Smith has been sidelined in Baltimore with a hamstring strain. Per Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, Smith has been rehabbing in the pool at the team hotel.

“We’re just being careful with it to make sure that I can play in the preseason game,” Smith said. “The best-case scenario is next week, middle to late portion of the week. You don’t want it to feel good and then go out there and push it and pull and it go back to ground zero. I’ll gradually build up.

“I’m not having any problems with the hernia or groin. That’s fine. The way I hurt it, it was just hot out there and I was running a lot and it just caught up with me. Luckily, it’s not a bad hamstring pull. It’s just a tweak.”

Why does it seem like I've heard this before?

** At the other end of the spectrum is Brian Dawkins, who is taking part in his first training camp with a team other than the Eagles. The place has changed, but the attitude is the same.

Headline from The Denver PostDawkins: More contact, please.

“As a matter of fact, I was looking for some live periods, because that’s what I’m used to," he said, per the article. "I’m used to, what they call ‘tackling to the ground.’”

Dawkins explained the mentality he's trying to bring to Denver.

“You’ve got to be a little crazy to play defense and run into somebody full speed and like it,” Dawkins said. “That’s the mentality we have to develop – that everybody likes to run into guys full speed and sacrifice yourself for your team.”

And you wonder why this city embraced the guy the way it did.

** And finally, the number of first-round picks that remain unsigned is dwindling. As of this post, 19 players have agreed to terms. Jeremy Maclin, of course, is not one of them. Robert Ayers, the player selected one spot ahead of Maclin, is unsigned, but picks 15 through 17 are all under contracts. Brandon Pettigrew and Alex Mack, picks 20 and 21, have both agreed to terms. CAA, which represents Maclin and eight other first-round picks, has six of nine players under contract. Joining Maclin as unsigned first-round picks are Knowshon Moreno and Malcolm Jenkins.

Update: Bob Brookover over at Birds' Eye View reports that a Maclin deal is close.

Maybe L.J. Smith can come help Shawn Andrews rehab. Both their injuries sound just "not serious" enough to miss 10-12 games.

allfillyphan, it is all about 'slotting'. Happens every year the 1st rounder waits to sign. each subsequent pick needs him to set the table, then the rest can sign for cascadingly les $. But the 1st rounder has to 'break the ice'. Then the rest - as we are seeing - fall in line. My prediction? Maclin will be signed an in camp by Tuesady at the latest. Take it to the bank.

Thank God LJ is not our headache anymore. What an overpaid, overhyped waste. Always hurt, always dropping passes, missing blocks and falling down when he did catch the ball. I will take Ingram and Celek. My question to the Eagles, why did it take so long to move on from this guy?

jrc3128: Quentin Mikell was the Eagles' best safety last season. I feel pretty good about having Demps or Jones starting at the other spot.

I will miss Dawkins, He was a Eagle great. He got a contract that he could not refuse, the best to him. He will be back as an Eagle in some capacity at some time. VanessaJ, There are 32 teams who think they can win the superbowl this year. We are just one of them. I think we have a better chance than about 21 of them. We have waited a long time for a championship and I love all of the Philly fans(the best in the world). We don't cheat and we play fair. There is no reason to dislike the Eagles, unless they beat up on your inferior team last year, and it will surely happen again, have a nice day. Victor1244

P-DIDDY: isn't it ironic how whenever the defense has had a great game or performance late in the season at a critical juncture in the past it was always keyed by the performance of Dawkins? The defense has always struggled when he isn't on his game and even though he was up in years his presence was enough to give the defense a boost but now that he is gone there is no one to fill that role and you will see that if the team struggles on defense this season.

Going to be an interesting year without JJ. Some how, the bloom is off the rose with his loss. You just don't replace a guy like him in a season or two. Imagine where Andy would have been without him. We will miss you, Jim.

Yeah I was actually looking at the yearbook edition for the eagles last season. I mean who is gonna step up and lead like Dawk did. I swear every game they showed, he was in the middle hyping the players up, pushing shouting! Don't care what people said about his performance, but he made big plays in dame near every game. At least the last 4 or 5 when it counted the most!

LJ injured? ha, ha, ha, ha.....he's taking it slow and easy in the pool? ha, ha, ha, ha......wonder if he'll still be saying that by week 8? Won't matter, he'll still be dropping passes and falling down 3 yards short of a first down anyway. He's somebody elses problem now.

Was watching the Eagles/Cardinals NFC championship game yesterday on NFL Network and what struck me is there was a moment when the Birds were down and Dawk was trying to fire every one up with a speech. Silly boy, didn't you know that passion and fire for your team will surely get you released? You have to just mail it in like the rest of the team. You know, want more money and don't play too hard or you might hurt yourself. Eagles SUCK!

LJ must be laughing all the way to the bank. I wonder what his $$/hits ratio is? He must've have made more $$ per bruise than any NFL player in the last decade.

How can you say Dawk is a shell of his former self and still cal urself and Eagles fan? I wish Dawk was wearing midnight green right now. Did u read his words? Do u think he talks like that to get himself quoted or do u think he means what he says? Please THINK B4 u type kingout! Dawk will forever be a leader and a top player as long as he is in the NFL. He wouldnt have it any other way. ...Ps in other news LJ is not felling up to par.

I heard LJ caught the ball and fell on it, hurting his hamstring in the process. This is why he should never catch the ball - catching the ball causes injuries.

LJ and Reggie should get the boot. The rookie better get to camp unless he plans on riding the bench. They kill me when they have no professional resume, yet they want to hold out for the big bucks. Just like on your job, show up, prove yourself then ask for a raise. Who gives a person a raise that hasn't even shown up for work. Athletes are delusional.

p-diddy...I agree with you, Quentin was the best safety. Although I think Jones would be better than Demps. Not sure about Demps' pass coverage and it's not just because of what the Cardinals did to him. I just don't think he covers the pass well.

When I saw the headline "L.J. Smith injured", I thought that they were re-posting articles from last pre-season. Or was it the one before that? Or the one...

yo iamnotTHATking!! Watch that talk about Dawk. Dawk was the best Eagle ever. Mikell is good, but not yet proven to be a worthy leader as we had in Dawkins. Jury is still out and I really hope I am proven wrong too. Dawk was a better Eagle than than Reggie White too, who I need to remind people, that he wanted to retire a Packer and not an Eagle! LJ was useless and I am surprised we kept him for as long as we did.
