Kolb as trade bait?
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
File this one under the rumor category.
Pro Football Weekly speculates that the Eagles could try and showcase Kevin Kolb this year and use him as trade bait after the season:
With talk that Donovan McNabb could get an extension that could make him an Eagle for his entire career, it’s interesting to note what might happen to Kevin Kolb, once believed to be the heir apparent at quarterback. Our sources continue to tell us that the Eagles like Kolb — just as the Packers liked Matt Hasselbeck once and the Patriots liked Matt Cassel after his breakout season. There just might not be a home for Kolb, who is signed through 2010. Don’t be surprised if he is showcased a little bit this season, perhaps in a blowout or two, and then becomes trade bait next offseason.
Kolb was actually asked about this exact rumor during an interview with ESPN 950's Mike Missanelli earlier this week.
Here was his response:
"You know, I have no idea what's gonna happen," Kolb said. "And that's why as you get more years under your belt, you learn, like I said before, you just gotta take care of what's your problem on the field and the play will take care of everything else. Do I want to be an Eagle for my entire career? Yes, I want to stay here. And hopefully it works out for both Donovan and I, but whatever happens, it happens, and I don't have any control over it. I can just go out there and continue to play ball the best I know how."
The thought that the Eagles would showcase Kolb in blowouts seems a little silly to us. Would a team really base its decision to trade for a guy because of what he does in mop-up duty? Not sure that makes a whole lot of sense.
But (as if you need encouragement) feel free to chime in on the rumor and Kolb's comments.

By the way, thanks to many of you who have e-mailed me with your fan stories. I'm still trying to decide what the best way is to share them. I may just give them a quick edit and post some in the upcoming weeks.

- I wonder what the Eagles could get for him? Anything less than a #2 would bring down the fire on the FO. And then again it would make a the heir apparent a open issue too. Ohmy
- He's just about worth a bag of practice balls.
- He's just about worth a bag of practice ba.lls.
There are very few sports reporters, commentators, bloggers, etc. who actually have real sources for speculation and rumors. Most of it is just somebody sitting down and thinking out loud about what some team might do or could do. Seems like more than half of all of the reporting on sports teams nowadays is nonsense. JimG
Its not like its too difficult to surmise what teams would even be in the market for Kolb. His trade value would be very low and likely not more than a fourth round pick. The dolphins blew it with Feeley giving the Eagles a 2nd. Kolb looks like Trent Edwards to me from Buffalo. Nice backup, not a starter. I dont have alot of basis for the comparison as of yet. He just looks like he has toothpicks for legs and an arm better than Chad Pennington. University of Houston pedigree doesnt scream much. I think Kolb will be chalked up as a guy Reid coveted when he was unsure McNabb was healthy. The next starting qb for the Eagles is a freshman on some college team. TimeforChange

Kolb isnt the future for the Eagles. The FO would be smart to move him now when he is young.I know Feeley is a capable back up and he will be for atleast for 4-5 years so get a pick or two and load up on some more weapons for next year. reggleston38

Lonewolf you do not appreciate what McNabb has done for the Eagles...Hes only won over 80 games has the 4th best win pct. in the last 10 years has the most passing touchdowns and yards in the Eagles franchise history has played in over 20 playoff games named to 5 probowls...Ya your right we should hand our team to an unexpirience qb McNabb has been doing more with less his whole pro career. I suppose you would like Bobby Hoying or maybe Bubby Brister or Doug Pederson to come back to show us how to start losing regularly.. reggleston38
Let's see, it's illegal to bring up DM and Marino in the same paragraph but OK to compare Kolb to Bret Farce. Now I get it. Hahahahahahahahahahaha! tpizza
