Kolb says he called out Eagles plays

Kevin Kolb was on the sidelines during his return to the Linc on Sunday afternoon, recovering from turf toe and other injuries to his right foot.

But the former Eagles quarterback may have still played a minor role in the Cardinals' victory.

Speaking with Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow on 94 WIP Tuesday afternoon, Kolb said he was able to identify some of the Eagles' plays and was shouting out instructions to the Cardinals defensive backs.

"It was funny, as they were lining up for the plays, I’d go 'Hold on, they’re gonna do this.' And you don’t know if they changed things up or what... but the ones that I was for sure on, I was letting it ring, and I think I helped us out maybe just a little bit here and there," he said.

Kolb explained that he worked with the defensive coaching staff during the week to help Arizona prepare for Michael Vick and the Eagles' offense.

"During the two-minute drill, you almost feel guilty," Kolb said with a laugh. "Mike’s sitting there giving the signals, and I’m standing there on our sidelines, screaming at our corners, 'Hey it’s a go ball, hey he’s running a screen, hey he’s running a slant.'"

Asked why the Eagles wouldn't change things up, knowing about Kolb's familiarity with their offense, he explained that this kind of thing happens on a weekly basis, using the example of the Cardinals facing Anquan Boldin and the Ravens. Kolb downplayed his effect on the game, saying he probably only helped on a handful of plays.

"How much of an effect do I really have?" he said. "I’m screaming to one guy. He may hear me, he may not. Luckily for us at that point [presumably the 2-minute drill at the end], the crowd was pretty dead and some of our guys could maybe hear it."

Vick, of course, played his worst game as an Eagle, completing just 16 of 34 passes for 128 yards and two interceptions. He averaged just 3.8 yards per attempt.

While the Cardinals' defense deserves credit, Vick misfired on throws to several open receivers, and the Eagles had five drops. It also didn't help that they were without DeSean Jackson and had a banged-up Jeremy Maclin for much of the game.

But Kolb's instruction certainly didn't seem to hurt, as Eagles wide receivers totaled just eight catches for 55 yards on 18 targets, and Vick either took off to run or was sacked on nine of 43 dropbacks.

That happens all the time when players go to another team.....Steve Smith will be informing the Eagles defense this week when they play his former team the Giants.

Andy put Kolb in a better position to make plays.

Sadly, the Eagles players and coach have given up. There will be an uptick in guys going down with little unexplained tweaks because they know the season is lost. Never thought I'd say that I miss Mcdermot, but he was better that Juan. The Giants are going to smash us by at least 21, place your bets.

By the Eagles logic, Kolb's ability to understand what the offense was trying to do would seem to make him and excelent defensive coordinator candidate for next season.

Of course he IS under contract and a valuable commodity so the Cards would require some sort of compensation,

...but I'm sure they'ld being willing to accept DRC.

...Yanno, so they can do Kolb a favor and give him a better opportunity on account of him being a nice guy and all.

I think a picture of Jim Johnson could coach this defense better than Castillo.

I'm sure current Eagles have done it to their former teams. DRC didn't seem to help much with that though.

Funny stuff there 'dasher'. What's not funny is the state of this team. This is what you call a "Dream Team"? I guess Fat Andy, Juan Can'tcoacho and Marty Notawake are all in the same dream. When will they wake up and realize that this so called team has gone down in flames this season? Never, I guess because nothing will change. I'm glad that Kolb called out plays so now everyone will realize that Fat Andy has to be FIRED! 13 years and we still have to put up with this slob of a coach?? Incredible!

Hahaha, Kolb did more good on the sidelines than he has done on the field. Come to think of it, that was true when he was still on the Eagles.
