Jaws, Gruden on Eagles win total

POSTED: Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 7:47 PM

The preseason predictions continue to trickle in from the national media.

Yesterday, I posted an item in which CBS' Phil Simms projected the Cowboys and Giants to make the postseason and the Eagles to miss out.

Today, two analysts with Philadelphia ties predicted that the Birds would not be over .500 in 2010.

During a Sportscenter segment on ESPN, Jon Gruden and Ron Jaworski were presented with 9 as the over/under for Eagles wins this season. And both analysts took the under.

"I'm not gonna make any friends in Philadelphia," Jaws said. "Less than 9 wins for the Eagles this year. A young team in transition, building for the future."

Does he expect Kevin Kolb to struggle?

"No, I don't," Jaws said. "I think he'll play solid. It's gonna be the defense."

Gruden agreed on the under.

"They've got a new quarterback, a lot of young players, tough division," he said.

Jaws predicted that the Cowboys would win the division, saying they'd win over 10 games. He has the other three teams in the division all finishing 8-8.

Gruden liked Dallas to win more than 10 games also, but he disagreed on the Giants, predicting that they'd win at least 11 games and take the division.

For the first time in a decade, it looks like it's going to be tough to find a member of the national media picking the Eagles to win the division.

RANKING KOLB 24TH

In case you missed it, ESPN.com's John Clayton released his list of quarterback rankings, and Kevin Kolb came in at No. 24:

Kolb is the perfect quarterback for Andy Reid's West Coast offense, which is why the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins. Kolb is a rhythm passer out of three- and five-step drops, and he should have a big statistical year.

Earlier I posted on the different things concerning the Eagles right now.

6-10. No lines. They get bulldozed on both sides of the ball.

And you expected what?? Gotta agree with Jaws and Gruden...until proven otherwise this is a young inexperienced team...

That's weird Jaws said that. I see our defense as much less of a problem then our offensive line.

All thought they are 2 of my most respected and intelligent analysts. They make great points with the defense being young, etc. However, only time will tell.

The eagles D line is a strength. Perhaps not dominant, but clearly a strength. It all comes down to the OLine. They are the difference between 10-6 and 6-10. On that count I'm not optimistic.

Man can Jaws dance!!! I caught him on DNL saying that Kolb's play was directly related to his inexperience and poor offensive line play. I remember when Jaws, Cosell and most of the DNL crew said that the line play would not matter because Kolb gets the ball out faster....SMH! Next to be on Dancing with the Stars!!! and that goes for Ray Diddy too!

In games that didn't involve the Cowboys last year, the Eagles were 11-3, even with the defense they had at the end of the year. Then they added Brandon Graham, Ernie Sims,Nate Allen, and got Stew Bradley ( you saw how bad the LB's were without him) and Ellis Hobbs back from injury. Patterson, Bunkley, Cole, Jordan, Mikell, Samuel, all pretty talented players, return. They also replaced Brian Stewart with Dick Jauron as secondary coach. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think this unit will be a strength this year.

Right on phatwiz, since McRib said the Eagles showed their youth in their 2 thumpings, the KKK materialized and said he was "stupid" "dumb" "not a leader" "gopher-killer". Now a year later, JAWS and Chucky say it, and well gee maybe they have good points. BABYARM! U are who I thought you were/are!

Considering all the changes, 8-8 would not be a bad year for this club. Still love ya "Jaws".

Jaws must be too busy in Bristol to pay attention to the birds. The D is the strength of this team, top 10 unit easy.

After reading Clayton's article, i have one question - How can half the QB's be elite? Doesn't that dilute the whole thing?

If they are right with their predictions then this will have been a wasted year. They should have kept McNabb. This would have been the perfect opportunity to win it all. I see no team in the division or conference better than the Eagles had they kept McNabb. With the Maturation of the recievers and the addition to the defense No doubt this would have been the year. Nobody else improved like the Eagles. Everybody else basically stayed the same and the eagles made big improvements in secondary and linbacker. End of story

The defense looks pretty solid to me. Better than last year's D. And they were a top 10 unit. The X-factor is Kolb. Unfortunately, they have a hard schedule and play in a tough division. Could go 11-5 or 5-11.

They will be lucky to win 6 games. AR always has small fast players. Problem is - they always get beat by BIG fast teams in the playoffs. I already miss DMC

Our D was 12th last year and we added simms , bradley and allen . The Eagles D will be top 6 at worst . I cant wait for all these moron talking heads who will be eating crow come december

a good o line wins them 9 games. they o line stinks. 6 wins, 2 or 3 almost wins, but blown after bone-head penalties. their schedule is BRUTAL. look at the last 5 games.

I remember 44-6 and making a run into the playoffs,I remember asking the next year how did they get better for the next year.It seems to me they are caught in the poor draft loop, drafting OL+LB+DBs then having to pay for them in free-agency.I've seen it before poor drafts are tearing this team apart, not willing to keep the veterans that were the heart and soul of the team, yet paying FA's more than you offer your guys. The best DL is what a 3rd round pick?OL is a hodge podge of other teams no wants and I'm sorry JPeters is not a top OT no matter how many times he makes the ProBowl,I think the AFC teams figured with a lazy tackle they make some extra dough winning the ProBowl

A D-line of Cole, Bunkley, Patterson and Graham is very good. The LB's are better, Nate Allen is definitely better than Harris, Demps, etc. I think CBs are shaky, but overall that's a good defense. As we saw last year, the O-line cannot handle teams that have a good pass rush. I'd say 9-7 at best, probably 7-9.

Eaglehart, would not win it all this year with Mcnabb , not with this schedule. Besides playing their own division, they play Packers,Cots, and Vikings, and upstarts like 49ers out there, and Houston. Plus Bears always give them tough game, and if Ryan plays for Atlanta this year, will be tough. They will be better next year, 1 more yr of experience, to go along with most likely easier schedule. And maybe find better O lineman.

Memo to Howie R.: neither the O-Line nor the secondary is going to rouse this fanbase until we get a classic Philly-style masher in each unit: another Brian Dawkins/Andre Waters-type to unnerve the opposition's wideouts, and another John Runyan/Ron Heller to loosen the teeth of the opposition's d-linemen. I'd be much happier with an 8-8 record this year and feel more optimism about the "youth movement" if these cubs had the look of future blood-thirsty lions. As things stand, I'm preparing to utter the words "At least Brandon Graham..." a lot this fall.

The offensive line is the main problem. When that is good, Kolb will be fine and Reid is at fault for not making a trade if in fact the draft didn't have good offensive lineman.

Kolb will be a solid leader for this team and the D will manage to keep most teams under 20pts per game. It's going to be the O-Line that makes or breaks this team, and I am leaning towards the latter. 9-7.

WR's is still the hold back for me, the WR's the eagles have are soft. At TE we are set but the wide outs are like silly puddy!

The first 8 games are going to be rough as they get their feet under themselves. The second half of the season will be a better barometer of how good (or bad) the D, Kolb, and O-line actually are.

Big problems on the offensive line. 8-8 would be a miracle, more like 6-10.

The goal for the Eagles is to win the Super Bowl. Last year, according to them, they had the best team in the league. They've improved as evidence of new players starting and contributing. Last year, with McNabb, they said they were legit Super Bowl contenders and many agreed. Now we're talking about missing the playoffs and a tough schedule. If you think you're a Super Bowl contender, you should be able to beat any team on your schedule. Now we're worried about teams like San Fran, Houston, and the Packers???

The O-line is a mess ! Peters is not a Pro bowler! The Rb`s cant pick up a block!! Recievers dropping balls !!!! But some fans wanna blame Kolb ! Well McNabb had a O-line that gave him 4 1/2 seconds to throw the ball!!! And 3 running backs !!! Remember the 3 headed monster and that vicious D!!! And McNabb never beat any of the elite teams !!! This team is young maybe to young!! 6-10 ! And the schedule is a killer!!! Kolb will be fine and he`s going to make mistakes!! But this O-line stinks!!!

What a quandary. Wolf said last year that "KK would win the SB within two years, or sooner." So he has the Birds winning the SB this year. But Jaworski and Gruden have the Birds winning fewer than 9 games. Who should I believe? Who should I believe?

1-14-1, first draft choice, which they will trade for three 3's and a 4.

6-10, but they will be competitive in all but a couple losses. It's the kind of year that's hard to figure out because the talent is there, but, especially on D, I see a leadership void. Hey, Allen and Graham are bringing it, and Bradley looks astonishingly sharp considering his injuries, but this group will face adversity, possibly on day one. And I just don't think they'll quite have the resilience that they've had in the past. Young players, young coordinator. I almost don't care, because it's going to be fun to watch no matter what.

McNabb is a better quarterback NOW. Kolb's value lies in his possible future. I think he'll throw a lot of picks this year.

Everybody knows what I think. Maybe 9-7 if they stay healthy and Andy keeps JJ from coming back to C too soon. The "D" might actually win a game or two....depends on how Sean game plans his troops, and if the secondary improves a little. And here's hoping Bobby April can find some decent coverage players for the kicks and punts....'cuz there's gonna be a LOT of punts.

Earth to Chuckie: If the NFC East has three teams finish 8-8, how does that comprise a "tough division"? The Giants are the most over-rated team in the NFL. Talk about O-line issues. And they keep copying the Eagles in the draft, only to take the lesser talent. Examples: Eagles draft Maclin, they draft Nix. We draft Graham, they draft a waste of a DE known as Pierre-Paul. And the Redskins? Please - they are one of the worst teams in the NFL. Talk about growing pains. They literally have ZERO players in their prime - over the hill or young. At least he Eagles have a core of players who, despite some youth, have numerous years' experience as starters - Trent Cole, both DTs, Herremans, DeSean, Celek, Mikell, Weaver. That's a solid nucleus.

Hope that Im wrong, but i dont see all the buzz for #4, at best 8-8 worst 6-10, crossing routes get the small receivers killed. O-line needs to step up. Dick Jauron improves the secondary. Growing pains1

Okay my worthless two cents if I may. They were not satisfied with DMc's accuracy so they bring in a Kolb that has that style of play that fits the O Scheme. To bad that DMc had to work with such mediocrity to achieve the success he did. That's the prerogative of business, which implies to me that it was the scheme that was not being properly optimized due to deficiency in the QB. Now we had the structure of a dynamic line with a young guy that had some problems. Of course he made all pro his first years of playing a full season. So his talent really didn't exist because he was having psychological and physical problems, how dare he do that. So after completing second surgery they cut him..hhmm. Then the intended support of bringing in his available brother that was strictly a Tackle and pressing him into a guard was a piece of brilliancy. Let's blame him for not performing at something new to him, his bad. Then we bring in a guy that has timing problems and he makes all pro. Release injured brother after 2 surgeries and opt to trade other brother to another team. Did I miss something here? All this to start at the point once passed to improve on play-book functionality. I wish them well for the format they configured. I guess the bean counter formula about money vs. age / durability will continue their merry go round. After all it is only entertainment for posterity and a placebo for fanatics..no
