The Big Kid is back.

The Giants announced today that they have signed former Eagles offensive lineman Shawn Andrews.

The Birds cut ties with Andrews back in March after he struggled to rehab from back injuries and battled depression. He has not played in an NFL game since 2008, when he was sidelined in the second game of the season.

Between 2005 and 2007, Andrews started 47 of 48 games, earning a pair of Pro Bowl berths and All-Pro honors in 2006. The Eagles drafted him with the 16th overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Arkansas.

When he was released, Andrews maintained that he had a future in the NFL. He had nothing but positive things to say about Andy Reid and the Eagles organization, explaining that he understood their decision and apologizing to the fans.

"You guys'll see me somewhere hopefully in somebody's jersey in Hawaii and wherever the Super Bowl is," Andrews said at the time.

The Giants announced the move via the team's Twitter account. Andrews signed the deal at 1:45 a.m.

"Our personnel staff has been monitoring Shawn's progress for a while now," GM Jerry Reese said in the release, per Mike Garafolo of The Newark Star-Ledger. "He looks great and had a very good workout for us yesterday. He can play both guard and both tackle positions. We just have to take him slow for the rest of the preseason to get him into game shape. Shawn is very excited and grateful for this opportunity to play for the New York Giants."

Back in June, Andrews was drafted in the third round of the UFL draft by the Omaha Nighthawks, but he obviously elected not to go that route.

The Eagles do not face the Giants until Week 11 this season. The Birds are counting on Shawn's brother, Stacy, to start at right guard.

Earlier today, I posted on Eagles players that have something to gain against the Bengals.

Andrews later admitted that the main reason he signed with the Giants was the greater size of the local hip-hop scene...and of course to get his Michael Phelps on. Suck it, Big Turd. Go make yourself useful and ruin their season. -not bob levy

I heard that Baby Huey reported, tripped over a blade of grass, and went to the trainer with excruciating back pain. My "over/under" for Shawn being UTP is one week (if he can even pass a physical)

Wow! Amazing that even after this guy has not played a meaningful down in about 3 years, there are still some people on this board that feel the eagles screwed up by letting him go. I'm sympathetic to anyone who has bouts of depression, but the guy's head has not been into football for years and i'll be shocked if he ever returns to the player he was. Would the Gmen like his brother as well??

I wish him well and hope he can regain the skills that made him the best guard in football. It's all about business and the giants made a typical eagle move...low risk($$$)high reward (if reliable). He is still better than anyone we have starting at RG/RT, if he can stay on the field. Eagles went as far as they could go with him.

I KNEW another NFC East team would sign him! The team other than the Eagles, who will come to regret this move, will be The Cowboys. Shawn would have been a Major upgrade over Doug free and Alex Barron, and he would have come at a much cheaper price. Pro Bowl Caliber O lineman with chips on their shoulders, are at a premium in this league, and the Giants just got one. Save all the sarcastic remark, because they will come back to haunt you BIG TIME!

The problem with Andrews is he's a non-football player stuck in an offensive lineman's body. He has absolutely no desire to play. He'd be happier as a hair stylest or a bouncer in a men's only bar.

I think this is a good move by the giants. It's a no lose situation, if he plays well, which I think he will just to put it to the Eagles, they make out. If he can't play, didn't cost them much. Would have liked the Eagles to take another look at him, see what he had left...
