Freddie Mitchell sounds off

POSTED: Saturday, July 26, 2008, 3:27 PM

I was on the Web site for 570 KLAC in Los Angeles yesterday looking for the interview where Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer ripped into Ohio State fans, and something caught my eye.

A podcast of an interview with Freddie Mitchell. If you're like me, you haven't really thought of Mitchell too much recently. The last time I saw him was when Mitchell's photo popped up on Deadspin while he was reportedly substitute teaching in Indiana. So when I saw that there were sound bytes of Mitchell, I figured I'd better listen, and I wasn't disappointed.

Here are some highlights:

On why he isn't in the league: "For some reason, I don’t know why it’s happening, it’s not really an explanation for it. I could see if I’m calling the teams and they say you’ve lost a step, but they’re not really saying that."

On why things didn't work out in Philadelphia: "Donovan was Brad Childress’ guy and for whatever reason, Donovan didn’t like me and Brad didn’t like me.

"I know Donovan probably didn’t like me because I came from Hollywood and was this big thing from UCLA to Hollywood, coming to Philadelphia, they’re like ‘Who is this little kid coming in here getting more interviews and more media than I am?' It was bad. It was the same thing with Terrell Owens."

On how he performed during an offseason workout with the Ravens: "I did a pretty good job over there, didn’t drop one ball. They said they were going to get back to me."

On the league being a business: "If they want to blackball you out of the league, they can blackball you out of the league."

There was more. Mitchell said he's staying in shape and can run a high 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. He also had a couple great quotes that you might find inside a fortune cookie like "It's funny how society works" and "Success is situational."

Mitchell said there's no reason he shouldn't be in the league.

"I know that they know I can play in the league. I’ve done it," he said.

I guess he was referring to 2003 when he took the league by storm with 35 catches for 498 yards and two touchdowns.

If you're looking to kill 12 minutes, the radio station has the entire interview posted for your listening pleasure.

The fans actually like him. They gave him a much longer leash than Pinkston, who was 5 times as productive. Philadelphia fans play favorites, and Mitchell was one of them.

freddie has said some brash things before, but I could never talk bad about him. He visited my brother in the hospital after he got pulled off a roof by a faulty pulley. He survived but has brain damage. He took to my brother and left tickets for him and his son to evry home game that year. Thanks freddie

I NEVER thought of Fred X as mean spirited, and always took his brashness as a (good natured) pose for the media. Sometimes his mouth ran away with him, but he could flat catch a football!. Anybody remember 4th and 26? I would love to see another Eagles receiver with Freddy's skill set.

Leron you are actually going to debate the productivity of two of the more forgettable receivers in Philly history. Fred's big mouth and lack of production put him where he is today. He has had other tryouts and didn't make the grade. 4TH AND 26 while a great moment in Eagles history. There's no future in memories.

As much as I like Freddie and even T.O. as personalities, Freddie wasn't the victim he pretends. Freddie ran poor routes and never had the speed to beat out Todd Pinkston as the no. 2 receiver. He also had a big mouth. The NFL doesn't blackball you if you've got talent. Keyshawn Johnson, T.O., Chad Johnson, Ray Lewis, Deion, Pacman Jones, and sooner than you think, Michael Vick (likely as a RB). But you have to be at least a little bit of a difference maker to put up with that much nonsense. Freddie's fame is built on two (2) plays, and both were inarguably Donovan's accomplishment as opposed to Freddie's.

Fred, you're not in the league because you suk, period. Also, riding T.O.'s coat tails won't get you anywhere. P.S. - the Ravens won't call back.

bigcityballer, your last sentence may be one of the coolest things I've ever read. And Midge Rendell: How DARE you interject a completely rational and compelling synopsis of the subject! Don't you know us knuckleheads are in the middle of RANTING???

a long history of success for Fed-Ex. 2 enjoyable catches to my memory. Fed-Ex was Fed-Axed for good reasons.

Freddie was hyped coming in as a first rounder and then did not deliver. It is amazing how many first rounders bomb with the team that picked them AND with another team. Teams are smart, saw what Freddie delivered and said enough thank you. Freddie would have done better if Andy had skipped him and he had gone in the second round. He would not have been crowned and he would have had a better chance making a team with a system that he fit. Freddie though never got over his first rounder status and that was his flaw.

I saw Freddie at his finest at the superbowl, I stayed in players hotel and saw him completely dis a little kid asking for an autograph. He was just standing next to me with his 2 friends not being bothered but couldnt give this kid a second. I know autographs can prob get annoying and thats not to say hes a terrible guy. He did seem too hollywood though for his own good. Also, to blame McNabb please. What a joke, still doesnt know when or how to just shut up and go away. Cant believe posts that say he was good, ha.

Looking at these quotes from Fred Ex, it shows that he continues to be dilusional. Nobody cared that he was this big shot from UCLA and Hollywood, the Eagles just wanted a first round draft pick to produce. The 4.4 40 time must be measured in feet because he has no speed, great hands but no speed. As for being blackballed from the league, if he would have just gotten out of his own ego's way, he would be on the Chiefs. But he couldn't listen to the training staff there and get a minor operation to fix his knee and chose to play on it. The were willing to keep him on the roster to get better and produce but Fred Ex can overcome anything. Clown!!!

My goodness, with all the promise this year in Eagles Camp why in the world are people talking about Fred-X; Fred-X always thought he was more than he was, how many times did he remind people that he was on the Tonight Show (Jay walking segment) Fred-X "Hollywood killed the receiver in you" !!! Oh by the way, they are not going to be calling you back !!!
