Freddie Mitchell criticizes McNabb, supports Reid

POSTED: Monday, November 24, 2008, 5:51 PM
It seems that everyone is offering their opinion on the current state of the Eagles, and former wide receiver Freddie Mitchell is no exception.

FredEx talked about Donovan McNabb, Andy Reid and where the franchise is headed in an interview with Jody Mac and Harry Mayes on ESPN 950 this morning. Mitchell offered complete support for Reid, but was not so kind with his words for McNabb, which should come as no surprise.

Here are snippets of the interview:

Did he see this coming, specifically with McNabb?

"Well I mean, when you're in that environment and you see the intricacies of what's going on and the plays and stuff like that and what's not being produced, it was hard for me not to say something. ... My situation was pretty bad because I had to pick... go for what was wrong or go for what was right...T.O., a lot of people don't like him but he was totally in the right."

Did Reid coddle McNabb too much?

"There was a lot of breast milk out there."

How was McNabb viewed in the locker room when Mitchell played?

"It wasn't really a leader. ...Everyone knew what we had to do and we got it done. We were coached well."

Should the Eagles cut ties with Reid, McNabb or neither?

"Definitely not the coach. One hundred percent not the coach. ...Coach Reid is an amazing coach. He knows how to win." [Mitchell never really answered about McNabb]

On his relationship with McNabb when the two were teammates.

"It's sad that me and Donovan couldn't get along. ...I've had a lot of meetings with Donovan like 'Donovan, what am I doing wrong? How can I get better as a receiver?' and he would never ever tell me anything."

There was more from Mitchell.  He repeated comments made in July that the reason he's not playing has nothing to do with his athletic ability.

"It's not rocket science. Why didn't Barry Bonds play last year? It's not his ability to hit home runs."

Whatever that means.

Mitchell said he calls T.O., Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter every week.

"Every time I talk to 'em, they're like 'there's no reason why you shouldn't be out there playing,'" Mitchell said.

And when asked about if McNabb really threw up in the Super Bowl, Mitchell simply laughed and avoided the question. It almost sounded like he was confused about what was being asked, but maybe that was just my interpretation.

So what is Mitchell up to nowadays anyway? He opened up a joint called Brothers' Barbecue in Lakeland, Fla.

Let's see.. Freddie says his not playing in the NFL has nothing to do with his athletic ability...perhaps then it has something to do with his LACK of athletic ability, LMAO! Seriously, looking up and down the rosters of each NFL franchise I see they're just loaded to the cap with lightning fast deep threats with great hands. Sucks being so talented with no room at the inn.

So between the generously-portioned Andy Reid and the quarterback he allegedly coddled, "There was a lot of breast milk out there." We can now cancel the competition for World's Most Disturbing Visual.

Freddy Mitchell does not play with a full deck. By the way, Jason Avant is one reciever they have who is catching the ball and going over the middle. He is actually having a decent year for a backup. He already has about as many catches and yards as all of last year. As far as Brown...significantly less catches/yards than Avant. Stiff is a good description for him.

Freddie Mitchell was better than we gave him credit for. Just we had a crappy QB (McNabb) and a stubborn coach (Reid) who refused to make him good. He was one of the few willing to sacrifice his body for the first down.

Come on people Every player from the offense on that overhyped fraud of a 1999 UCLA team is out of the NFL except the Fumbler (D. Foster) who is backing up F. Gore in SFO because DeAngelo Williams is a better player. You can only run over Mark Simoneau so many times (twice)- Andy Reid's pick as a starting middle linebacker over Trottier (oh yeah don't critize Andy he complains - right Sal) or around and over Highway 59 (Andy's pick again this time over Sapp) Ansy had carried this franchise to heights never reached, but he is as high as he can go. Changes need to be made and #5 is not the change

Think it was Ray Rhodes who passed up Sapp. Freddie wasn't the most ralented guy, but I never saw him short arm a ball. He would go over the middle. Of course Reggie Wayne would've been a slightly better selection, but who would want one of those "U" guys anyway?

If Mitchell was worth anything to anybody, he'd be playing right now. That says it all.

Mitchell is a loser, so is the Editor who ran with this. Get a life. Get real quotes from real ex-Eagles like Chad Lewis. Better yet, update that resume..maybe you qualify to work at Popeye's.

Enough already about the throwing up at the Super Bowl. If you remember, right after he "threw up" he throw a TD pass to Greg Lewis. Greg "freaking" Lewis. That should tell you all you need to know about the type of players Mcnabb has had besides TO and Westbrook. He's not perfect. He has a lot of flaws. But he's the best quarterback the Eagles have had since Van Brocklin. He's going out of town and we will be stuck with Reid. You will miss him when he's gone. Cheer for Mcnabb Thursday Its your last chance
