Four downs: Historical start for Kolb

Four quick thoughts on the Eagles' 34-14 win over the Chiefs:
1. The Eagles said (per the Elias Sports Bureau) that Kevin Kolb is the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 300-plus yards in his first two career starts. That's pretty remarkable. Kolb's performance had a lot of similarities to last week's game. He has an obvious comfort level with Brent Celek, who caught eight balls for 104 yards. He found DeSean Jackson for another big play. And he missed a few throws, particularly on timing routes. But most importantly, he took care of the football, finishing without a turnover.
2. Speaking of Celek, he sure looks like an elite tight end after three games. The strength seems to be the major difference from a year ago. Celek is picking up a lot of yards after initial contact. He's sure-handed and has been finding the end zone consistently. I have to re-watch the game, but it seems like he's improved as a blocker as well.
3. How about the offensive line? Zero sacks for the Chiefs. Remember when this was the Eagles' biggest question mark going into the season? Injuries, a lack of continuity, etc. This unit has performed admirably through the first three weeks. Props go to Juan Castillo and company.
4. The defense got shredded a week ago against the Saints. I know the Chiefs are not the Saints, but you didn't see the same errors (missed tackles, giving WRs big cushions) that you saw a week ago from this unit. I still have my concerns about the 'D' long-term, but the Eagles face the Bucs, Raiders and Redskins after the bye -- three of the worst offenses in the NFL. In other words, they have some time before facing a real test.

I am glad to say I am one of the few people how do not have to eat a big bowl of crow today over Kolb. I feel much better knowing that if Donnie goes down (or is benched-hopefully not), things won't fall completely apart. Same with Westy. Loves those guys, but we have to feel good thinking about how young the offense will be after those guys are gone.

Klob looked pretty decent against an absolutely awful team. Probably the worst in the league. Way to over react, morons.— thingfish
Kolb did fine. I could have done fine.— tpizza- I am grateful that Kolb has far exceeded my expectations for these first two starts. I was worried based on his prior performances. But, he has shown that given the proper preparation he has the potential to be a starting QB.

Sheil, the Eagles DID have a turnover, when Garcia fumbled the snap on his first play. I think your point was that Kolb didn't have a turnover and took care of the ball. Anyway, it is remarkable that Kolb had over 300 yards both starts. I think it points to the fact that as frustrating as Marty and Andy can be with the play calling, the offensive system works and racks up the yards as long as the QB knows the system.- Comment removed.

- Kolb definitely showed me something today. I have been skeptical about him, but he exceeded my expectations. I hope he can keep it up. He wasn't asked to go out and win the game, but he played very well within the game plan that seemed more balanced between run and pass. Shady was a revelation, too.— FKD215
- Kolb's bad throws seemed to be receivers, especially Maclin, making the wrong reads. Give Kolb credit for proving his doubters wrong. Give Andy Reid credit for developing QB's all the way back to Farve.— Lockyer

- lonewolf: After last year's cowboys 44-6 game, you downplayed McNabb's performance and stated, "everyone plays well in a blow out." But after today's blowout, you are heaping effusive praise upon Kolb like Madden goes overboard on Favre. This is why I have a problem with your comments. You, sir, aren't consistent. - Look, I think Kolb played well, imagine when he starts getting his feet properly set, I dont care who they were playing, he was throwing ropes ENABLING the receivers to get YAC, I bet he was even thinking "I got this" when the camera showed mcnabb coaching him up. - lonefart and bil1966- you guys are the biggest haters and losers- Kolb did a decent job against an awful defense, like prev posts- he should have had 1-2 INTS today, Djac and Bcelek had many YAC and made Kolbs numbers look good (kudos to them), last week Kolbs yards were during garbage time when the Saints were playing prevent. KEEP IT REAL. Mcnabb is the starter and gives us the best chance to win and GO to superbowl. Kolb is a decent back-up right now, but even Feeley is still probably better if we kept him. His arm looks weak.— jttemp2000

- Yippeeeeee......another QB controversy......I can't wait to get sick of it. The possibilities are endless....Bench McNabb & start Kolb, Start Vick and bench McNabb.....Trade Kolb and keep Vick and Garcia....start Garcia and have McNabb as a backup.....Trade Vick and start Garcia with Kolb as a backup and cut McNabb....start McNabb and have Garcia take some snaps at wildcat....start a different quarterback each quarter.....line up all of the quarterbacks in the backfield and let them fight over the snap. It is nice to have multiple players at the position and Andy & crew deserve credit and we'll enjoy watching, but get sick of the endless conjecture & fixations on subjects like Vick....complete with all of our personal judgements such as Phil Sheridans' hate of Vick.— bonnerlou

You see, I root for the Eagles and I want ALL our players to succeed, and I evaluate their performances without biases. - Kolb did fine like I knew he would once AR altered the game plan to something more suited to him. Celek TD pass was terrific. KK does lead his receivers into big hits too often though. Short passes, yards after the catch, no turnovers, ball control. That's what I wanted, that's what I got. No deep threat though and a better D will feast on that but thanks KK for finally winning one. Your first win and wiff's first correct "prediction" of the year. And it's only September. Now back to reality, it was the Chiefs.— tpizza
