Eli Manning: NFL's highest-paid player

POSTED: Wednesday, August 5, 2009, 8:43 AM

Reports have surfaced this morning that Eli Manning and the Giants have reached a contract extension that will make him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com was the first to report the news this morning.

And Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger has the numbers, which are astounding.

Per Garafolo, it's a six-year extension worth $97.5 million. The final year of his current deal is included in the contract, giving him $106.9 million over seven years.  According to the report, Eli's brother, Peyton, had previously been the highest-paid quarterback in the league, earning $14.17 million. Eli's contract comes out to $15.2 million per year.

I don't think I need to ask you what you think on this one, but sound off in the comments below.

We wonder how Donovan McNabb feels about the news.

Philly.com's Danny Abelson is out at the practice field while I type. Some early morning notes:

** No McNabb or other 30-plus players out there today. They get the day off as a perk of Andy Reid's 30-and-over club.

** Jeremy Maclin is practicing for the first time, but of course, McNabb-to-Maclin will have to wait.

** Just got another text. Maclin has made his first catch! No defense, but still, gotta start somewhere, right?

** Danny also reports that rookie tight end Cornelius Ingram is not practicing today. We'll check on this one later.

** And no Jason Peters or Shawn Andrews.

** OK, heading out. More later. And don't forget we live chat at 2.

haha what a joke. Nice work bankrupting your franchise on a loser QB Giants. Move over Redskins, the NFC East is going to need some room in its cellar.

Who cares how Super 5 feels. At least Shely has a ring. That said it is a joke that he is paid as the best when he was completely reliant on the jump ball for success. This is just another example of what is all wrong with sports today. I wish it would crash like the NHL and then start over.

Well, he should be paid more than McNabb because he's got the ring, as much as I hate to say it. Though, if McNabb had the same weapons during his career...

3 years from now, Eli's contract will barely place him in the 10 paid QB list. It's all about timing in NFL.

McNabb had plenty of weapons in Westbrook and TO and did not beat the Pats.

I could care less that he has a ring. No team was out there dying to make Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson the highest paid QB in the league after they won a ring. He's not even one of the best five players at his position. It's a joke.

Pro Bowl Tard?? Eli had a great year last year. Its a shame he had the rug pulled out from beneath him, when the Giants WR corp was terrorized by an unknown assailant, after the team was 11-1. Plax didn't get paranoid for no reason.

Woohoo! Let the haters hate. McNabb has the completion numbers because his offense is designed to throw to his RB all day. That said, what is his winning percentage in meaningful games? Not good. Eli has had his team in the playoffs every year he's been a starter. No other QB has done that. Only his brother, Peyton has done that over the past four years with Eli. Eli is either tied or 2nd behind Rothlisberger for 4th quarter comebacks since they've been in the league. That's why the Giants have so much faith in him. Oh yeah, he also won a SB where he had to drive the field TWICE in the 4th quarter to seal the win. Has McFlabb ever done that?

Like I said, its a shame he had his WR corp affected so late in the year. McNabb had the same crew all year.

e-nutt, I was away for a while. What challenge is wiff ducking this time? On another issue, because of where I live I "get' to listen to the local ESPN commentators talk about Giant camp. Yesterday they spent the whole program complaining that because Ellen Manning has no #1 receiver it would be unfair to expect him to get the team deep into the playoffs. What a joke. Ellen can't do without for 1 year what DM has had to do his whole career sans T.O. Then to listen to how little regard the Giant fans that called into the station have for him...pitiful. They all expect their running game and their D line pressure to carry the team. NOT Ellen. And I highly doubt DM will even comment or care what Ellen is making.

Amazing!!! Once the most maligned quarterback in football, now earning more than his bro! Man, this is the Twilight Zone.

Wiff, I was addressing e-nutt. Like children are instructed, please speak only when spoken to. BTW, upstaters don't speak with that accent so you are making more of an *ss of yourself than usual. And who is the "we" you are referring to? Wait, I really don't care.

Really? I was asking e-nutt what challenge you were ducking, not you. Reading comprehension wiff. Try a class, and GET some class while you are at it.

How many times have we seen someone in our company with the same or fewer qualifications earn a little more than us? In the end, who cares? Millions of dollars are millions of dollars. McNabb probably has more endorsement contracts.

wiff, it's "you're" not your. Perhaps a grammar class too? Also, you must be very young because your maturity level appears to be very low. You post like two kids on a playground as if it's a "my father is tougher than your father" p*ssing match. No one cares what you think. You require comments and quotes from wacko posters and has been boxers and announcers to corroberate your comments. With increased maturity you'll acquire the ability to make a comment and stand on your own two feet to defend it. Don't worry, you're on the wrong road now but things will get better. Now please go sit at the kiddie table while I await e-nutt's answer. I won't respond to you any more today, if ever.

Eli = 4 years as starter. 1 SB, 1 SB MVP, and 1 Pro-Bowl. All 4 years the Giants have made the playoffs, and have been atleast 6-2 , at the mid-point of each season.

E-nutt, I take it you challenged him to a boxing match? We both know he'll keep dodging you but I'd drive the 200 miles just to see it. Better wear a cup, for obvious reasons, and a tetanus shot might be in order too because I'm sure he admires Mike Tyson. As for the mope himself, whatever the physical age, the age of maturity is well beyond his reach. I'm just not sure who he thinks is really interested in his incessant DM ranting. I am convinced he's not an Eagles fan though [Giants, I think because of the EM infatuation] so if I were him I'd hate DM too and want KK in at QB.
