Eagles interested in Gonzalez?

POSTED: Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 2:42 PM

I was poking around various sites this afternoon doing some draft research, and stumbled upon an interesting nugget from Don Banks of SI.com.

The item concerns Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, a guy we've written about several times here at MTC.

Banks says he's hearing "buzz" that the Eagles might have moved past the Falcons as a potential suitor for Gonzalez. Per Banks, the Birds are thought to be willing to offer up a third-round pick.

But according to the article, the Chiefs are looking for a second-rounder.

Gonzalez skipped the Chiefs' voluntary minicamp last week, although, according to The Kansas City Star, he has skipped the workouts before.

He turned 33 in February, but had a spectacular season in 2008, catching 96 balls for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns.

So what do we think? Would you give up a third-round pick for Gonzalez? What about a second-rounder?

Not a 2nd rounder for a 33 year old. At that age he would just be a stop gap. Maybe not even a 3rd.

The window to win with McNabb is only another 2 or 3 years anyway...I would trade a 3rd, definitely, but probably not a 2nd unless I got a 4th or 5th rounder back along with Gonzalez. But the offense suddenly goes from pedestrian in the red zone to high-octane with Jackson, Westbrook, Gonzalez, and hopefully another threat from a 1st or 2nd round pick. The Eags need a big, move the chains type of receiver and he fits the mold perfectly.

Even a third round pick is a stretch. You don't give up 2nd or 3rd round picks for a 33 year old. That pick can be better used to either move up in the draft to get Knowshawn, make a move for Boldin, or somehow get Pettigrew (depending on where he's going to go). Gonzo would be great in a west coast offense, but that pick can be put to better use.

If it took a 3rd, I'd do it.

3rd, 5th and Reggie Brown. For a guy who caught 96 passes for over 1,000 yds and 10 TDs on a terrible team this is a very reasonable price to pay, even if he is old. Plus it gets the Chiefs a couple of picks and a potential 2nd receiver for them.

In a Phreakin heartbeat!!! This would be better than Boldin !! Great Red-Zone target and the BEST blocking TE in the NFL. He would open up the flats for Westy in the screen and swing pass game better than anyone. He would cost less than Boldin too. Then they could pick a RB in round 2, I like Javon Ringer for them more than any other RB except maybe Moreno. Use that #1 for the best athlete available- DB , LB or WR

I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to add a proven tight end to this team to be a consistent threat in the offense, provide some leadership, and be a mentor to Celek. If we pull this off and draft a stud running back at #21 I think we will have used our picks wisely rather than putting a monster package for a wideout (that is why we arent the cowboys)...

Not on a 33yr old TE who is going to help us for a yr or 2 and then would want a "new contract"!!!!!!!!!!!. I would give them one of our 5th Round pick

ABSOLUTELY! Cure the red zone problem and the blocking TE problem instantly. 2nd rounders is steep, but can't be stingy. Offer the 3rd plus two 5th rounders. They not getting Sheldon.
