Eagles sign DE from CFL

POSTED: Friday, February 11, 2011, 8:33 AM

Update: This move is official. The Eagles announced that they've signed Hunt to a three-year deal.

From earlier: The Eagles are expected to sign defensive end Phillip Hunt, according to Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com.

Hunt played in the CFL last season and led the league with 16 sacks as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Listed at 6-1, 248 pounds, he previously played at the University of Houston and turned 25 last month.

In his last two college seasons, Hunt had 25 sacks, and he was named Conference USA Player of the Year in 2008.

According to Caplan, the period to sign CFL players ends on Feb. 15.

Embedded below is a draft profile video of Hunt from April of 2009.

The Eagles currently have eight defensive ends on their roster: Trent Cole, Brandon Graham, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, Juqua Parker, Darryl Tapp, Bobby McCray, Ricky Sapp and Victor Abiamiri.

Of that group, Abiamiri spent 2010 on the physically unable to perform list, and Sapp was on injured reserve as a rookie. Graham suffered a season-ending knee injury, and McCray joined the team late in the season.

On Thursday, I put up a post on Cole's production and how dropping back into coverage was not the primary factor in his struggles down the stretch.

Update: I got a comment on Facebook that said "Who cares about these CFL guys?" Well, the Dolphins did. They signed Cameron Wake out of the CFL, and he had 14 sacks last season. Not saying that Hunt is Wake, but it's unwise to dismiss him just because of where he played previously.

Phil Hunt will be cut EOM August--just like RB Martell Mallet who tore up the pre-season. Eagles are fearful of trusting anyone with unusual professional pedigrees. What a shame.

He'll be a valuable addition to our NFL best defensive line "rotation".

He's a CFL player Denny. The Eagles went this route last year with a running back who didn't make the roster.

Whoa---just realized--he was Kevin Kolb's teammate at Houston---wonder if Kevin persuaded Birds to sign him!

SK, thanks for reporting on the slow days of the offseason. If something is happening, no matter the significance, I can count on a post. With that said, I'm ready for the more significant pieces of breaking news... Come on draft!!!

Enough with the fastball! They need to mix in a changeup.

I watch a lot of CFL football here in Vancouver (and all Eagles games; Philly born and raised!)--there are some pretty good players up here, so don't laugh at or scorn the decision until we see how the young guy plays . . .
