Eagles morning notes: Still no Maclin

The first practice of 2009 Eagles training camp is in full swing, and as you've probably guessed, Jeremy Maclin is still not here.

But other rookies and selected veterans are in the heat, running through drills as they've probably been doing for the past 15-20 years of their lives.

Among the veterans are Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, A.J. FeeleyKevin Curtis, Max Jean-Gilles and Stacy Andrews. Andrews is wearing a brace on his knee as he recovers from ACL surgery.

I remember years ago when I came to training camp as a fan. The guy who wowed me when I saw him up close was Tra Thomas.

This year?

No doubt it's King Dunlap, who measures in at 6-foot-8, 310 pounds.

The running backs looked the loneliest during individual drills. LeSean McCoy, Eldra Buckley and fullback Marcus Mailei are the only RBs in attendance.

While Maclin is not here, sixth-round pick Brandon Gibson is. The coaches had a little fun with him when he made a mistake in drills, asking Gibson how the (Washington) Huskies could have even wanted him.

Life as a rookie in the NFL, I suppose.

On defense, we counted only 10 players here. That meant Brandon Whiting, who has been added as a coaching intern, lining up along the line to help out. Probably not what he thought he was signing up for.

After practice, we'll hear from new Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott and McNabb.

One other note -- you never know when you'll run into people from your past.

I bumped in to Mr. Sama, my ninth-grade Western Civilizations teacher, who is now coaching at West Chester.

Luckily, he did not quiz me on Julius Caesar.

Much more later.
