Eagles get shot at Jarmon today

The NFL's supplemental draft takes place today at 1 p.m., and there's a chance the Eagles could have a new player on their roster by the day's end.

ESPN.com's Joe Schad reported last month that the Birds were taking a look at Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon.

The supplemental draft is for players who are not eligible for the upcoming football season. Jarmon tested positive for a banned substance, but told the Lexington Herald-Leader he's trying to put the situation behind him.

"Some teams didn't even ask about it," he said. "The questions they had were answered by Mitch Barnhart (UK's athletics director) and Sandy Bell (UK's compliance director). Some teams just wanted me to explain my mind-set, and throughout the process they've been understanding. All the information is out there, they've seen it all, and now they're ready to move on and find someone to help them on their defensive line."

NFL.com's Gil Brandt does a good job of explaining how the supplemental draft works.

It's a round-by-round process that takes place over the phone (or over e-mail, as some other reports indicate). Teams get their chance to pick a player or pass.

The catch is that if you make a pick, you have to give up that selection in next year's draft. In other words, if the Eagles selected a player in the sixth round of the supplemental draft, they would lose a sixth-round pick in the 2010 draft.

ESPN.com's John Clayton projects Jarmon to have a fourth-round value, and I've seen other insiders predict the same via Twitter.

Eighteen teams watched Jarmon work out last week, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. Per the report, he weighed in at 278 pounds, and his 40-time ranged between 4.79 and 4.83.

The National Football Post said Jarmon was expected to be in the mix as a first-day pick in next year's draft, had he been eligible to play another season at Kentucky. Of course, as we see every year, draft projections can change dramatically from the start of a prospect's junior or senior season to the end.

We'll be back some time this afternoon to fill you in on who picked up Jarmon and the other prospects so check back.
