Draft buzz: Mocks, rumors and visits

Who are the prospects most recently linked to the Eagles? What are the chances they trade up? Here's a roundup of the latest draft buzz.

The draft buzz is building. Lots of little things to get to.

* The Eagles are one of eight teams that have shown "a great deal of interest" in Florida middle linebacker Brandon Spikes, his agent Terry Watson tells Robbie Andreu of GatorSports.com. Spikes (6-3, 249) is considered one of the top linebackers on the board. Thanks to reader Brian for the link.

* Reader Robert suggested the mock at WalterFootball.com. They've got the Eagles ending up with Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson at No. 24.

* Texas pass rusher Sergio Kindle has visited the Eagles, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post. Kindle (6-3, 250) projects as an outside linebacker or defensive end. He had 16 sacks in his last two seasons with the Longhorns. Thanks to Lance over at EaglesMix.com for reminding me I missed this one.

* Scott Wright at draftcountdown.com has the Eagles ending up with Texas safety Earl Thomas at No. 24:

Thomas doesn't have great size but he is very athletic and rangy with superb instincts and a real playmaking streak. Thomas would replace the ballhawking presence that Dawkins' provided in Philly's secondary for so many years.

* The guys over at Eagletarian referenced an SI.com report from Peter King, which said the Eagles are one of the few teams looking to move up in the first round, and they are targeting a safety.

My thoughts? I'm in believe it when I see it mode in terms of the Eagles trading up for a safety. There has just been such little evidence in the past to suggest that it's a position they value enough to give up picks for.

That being said, I taped a series of draft preview videos with Wes Bunting of the National Football Post yesterday, and he said he believes that Tennessee's Eric Berry is one of a handful of blue-chippers in this year's draft, meaning he has a high ceiling (perennial Pro Bowler). If the Eagles feel the same way, maybe they would consider making a move.

I do think the Eagles will be active. That might mean moving up. That might mean moving back. I'm just not sure it'd be for a safety. I still think cornerback is the biggest priority, given their defensive scheme.

* By the way, you can watch our first draft preview here. Good insight from Wes. It's the one titled "NFL draft preview (part one)."

* And don't forget about our special draft event at McFadden's on Tuesday. Note that the start time's been moved to 6 p.m.

* And finally, we've updated our list of Eagles draft workouts and visits.
