Eagles' QB situation in national focus

POSTED: Monday, March 15, 2010, 3:10 PM

With the big names in free agency having signed, and the draft still more than five weeks away, the biggest offseason issue right now is what the Eagles will do with their three quarterbacks.

That's the argument Peter King of SI.com made in his MMQB column today.

More specifically, King shifts the focus to NFL teams who have holes at quarterback, questioning why they're not going to the Eagles more aggressively to get Donovan McNabb:

Re: Seattle, franchise saviors usually don't last forever. Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier can tell you that. If I'm Pete Carroll, and I can have McNabb as my quarterback for the next four years, I jump at it. Cleveland, Oakland, Buffalo and Jacksonville are 7 through 10. If I'm Reid, I'm keeping Kolb (which I think he aims to do), and hoping/praying some team comes to its senses and chases McNabb before the draft.

King also points out that Marty Mornhinweg and Eagles quarterbacks coach James Urban were at Fordham's Pro Day last week to check out quarterback John Skelton:

I think one of the quarterbacks is going. Where, I don't know. When, I don't know. But one last note about the Eagles and quarterbacks: Fordham University, not exactly a football hotbed, had its pro day for NFL coaches and scouts Friday in the Bronx. Fordham has a late-round quarterback prospect, John Skelton. The Eagles were at the workout with not one coach but two -- quarterback coach James Urban and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. Maybe it means nothing, but it's pretty rare for two coaches to be looking at a late-round quarterback -- especially when you're as packed at quarterback as the Eagles are. Unless, of course, you're planning to jettison one of your quarterbacks before the draft.

Sounds like a bit of a leap to me. The coaches will evaluate hundreds of prospects between now and the draft. That's just what teams do in March. King admits as much. But it's worth pointing out nonetheless. I'd venture to guess that the Eagles will look at players at every position, regardless of what their current roster looks like.

Also, I did some poking around, and some draft pundits have Skelton rated pretty highly. Wes Bunting of the National Football Post has him as the fourth-best QB prospect in the draft. If that's the case, he'll be an early-to-middle round pick, not a late-round pick.

T.O., McNabb team up

You probably remember reading last week that Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens were scheduled to team up for an episode of Spike TV's Pros vs. Joes.

By all accounts, things went well. Tweeted Owens:

Had a blast shooting Pros vs Joes last nite! It's a MUST 2 tune n2 2 watch me, A Gates & D McNabb on the hardwood vs NBA players!

And Tweeted FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer, who's a part of the show:

After taping that special episode of pros vs joes, I can say that T.O. & McNabb were more than fine w each other. They had a blast

So there you have it. Everyone had a blast. Not sure when the show airs. Maybe we'll do a live chat during it.

Or maybe not.

mcnabb bashers are boring. they just need more excitement, like that provided by hof qbs like peterson, kemp, detmer, and hoying. ah, those were the days....i sometimes wonder if the bashers are really the defensive players- takes the heat off how mediocre they were last year...

wiff, you sound more and more like Chicken Little every day. The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Gimme a break. But now that the Rams and Browns [both teams you PREDICTED as destinations for DM are off the board] you must be starting to have nightmares. Don't worry, you can aaaaaalways count on Big Fred to do the right thing...hahahahahaha

The Eagles are praying that what Bill1966 posts about McNabb's value is not accurate.

Keeping McNabb is foolish. The offensive line and entire defense do not have the talent to compete for a superbowl. We need draft picks and smart selections and with that a lot of luck. If winning the superbowl is the prize, then you deal your most valuable asset to pick up a couple of extra players. The problem is that the Eagles as always overvalued their talent. Hence, a trade hasnt happened. If McNabb was the guy they wanted to stay, the birds would have signed Peppers. Only hope is that Favre decides to retire and Childress gives up the house for McNabb. Otherwise, another year wasted is coming.

"King shifts the focus to NFL teams who have holes at quarterback, questioning why they're not going to the Eagles more aggressively to get Donovan McNabb" - That's because McNabb is not for sale and they know that. The first QB Philly is looking to let go is Vick. The rest of this is just folly created by bored sports writers.

"Kevin Kolb has been ready to run this team since the Saints game of last season" I know he threw for 300+ yards, but he lost the game at the beginning of the 3rd quarter when the team needed a score and he threw a pick-6. I like how people conveniently forget the horrible interceptions Kolb has thrown in his limited opportunities. Why are we ready to anoint Kolb as the savior? What has he done? If Kolb was really THAT good, don't you think he would have earned the job by now? It's not like the Eagles didn't give him opportunities. They were ready to ship McNabb out of town in 2008 but Ed Reed abused Kolb so badly the eagles started questioning kolb's decision making. the pick against the saints seems to have magnified those questions. Do you people remember being one defensive stop away from the super bowl in 2008? how about winning 11 games with a decimated defense and a porous offensive line? be careful what you wish for with Kolb. If he takes over and the team misses the playoffs, you same people will be crying for another qb. McNabb will win a super bowl before his career is over, and I hope it happens here.

The Eagles trade average for average and the signings are off the `sick/injured list. Andy made a big splash signing Andrews (Knee) for big contract and he added ZERO for 2009, which is just a string of poor signings i.e. Pinkston, Brown etc.

Can anyone of you McNabb haters be truthful and tell us why you blame him for the inadequacies of a team 's inability to secire a good line to protect him and waited 10 years to get him more than one quality reciever. If it's true that defense wins championships, can you also explain why a defense that would spot almost every opposing team 21 points in the first half never got the blame but you only say McNabb as the reason for loosing? Or better yet allowed teams to score on them when they had a lead late in the game? Last time I checked no QB in the NFL can win a game or championship by himself. Just look at your god of QB's, Peyton Manning. Why has no one blamed him for losing the Super Bowl. Kind of sounds like a double standard for certain QB's. I suspect the dislike of McNabb in Philly goes beyond his ability to play at the NFL level, perhaps there is a deeper issue that no one will openly admit, maybe it has to do with his race? One other question, when you get Kolb as the starter and he stinks up the house, will all of you arm chair experts admit your true faults? I pray McNabb gets the heck out of Philly and go on to win at least 2 Super Bowls, while the Eagles go back to the cellar of the league pre-McNabb days. I love Philly but we have to many bigots and hypocrites who continue to throw rocks and hide their hands. "Man Up and Tell Us Truth"!
