Eagles work out Nevada QB

As the Kevin Kolb rumors continue to swirl, the Eagles are taking some time today to check out another quarterback, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.
Per the report, the Birds are holding a private workout with Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick had an impressive college career, throwing for 10,098 yards and 82 touchdowns. He also ran for 4,112 yards and 59 touchdowns.
Wison's story includes a quote from draft analyst Mike Mayock during a recent conference call.
"I had a chance to see him last summer at Peyton Manning's Passing Academy," Mayock said. "I spent three days watching the kid throw the ball with Peyton and Eli. He's got a huge arm. He's a great athlete, and he's got a big frame. The kind of guy you want to buy into. He's the kind of guy that's going to rise a little bit. A lot of people thought he was a third, fourth, fifth-rounder heading into the season. Now, he's probably a second round type of guy."
Kaepernick (6-5, 233) ran a 4.53 40 at the combine, second to only Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor among quarterbacks.
The argument for keeping Kolb has been that the Eagles will likely need a competent backup quarterback behind Michael Vick next season to make a Super Bowl run. That's true, but I don't see them going with a rookie in that role if Kolb gets dealt, especially considering the limited practice time that rookies could be facing.
I don't even think they'd want to go with second-year QB Mike Kafka in that role. More likely, they'd add a veteran signal-caller.
As for Kaepernick, the Eagles will work out several players in the coming weeks. Just because they work a player out doesn't mean they have a high level of interest in him. This is what NFL teams do this time of year.
With that being said, the workouts are not completely insignificant. Last year, the Birds worked out or hosted prospects like Jamar Chaney, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, Ricky Sapp and Charles Scott, who they went on to draft.

Sheil, I think the Eagles think more highly of Kafka than you do. I wouldn't be surprised if they went with Kafka as the backup and sign Jeff Garcia as an insurance 3rd QB. Garcia did play football last season so he's still in shape. soulman386

If the Eagles want to stay in the mold of the fantastic athlete at QB, then Kaepernick makes sense as a developmental QB. I would trade Vick, and go with their original plan of playing Kolb for 8-10 years. Vick is not going to stay healthy enough to get them to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season, and there's no way they're going this year. You get to the SB by trading the hottest guy in the NFL, Mike Vick. armchairGM
Is Jeff Garcia 50 years old yet? Dr. Michael
I'm starting to get a headache. The eagles are just trying to tease their gullible fans. Give me a brake!! oneway
armchairGM, don't the exclusive franchise tag and the $20 mil contract make Vick pretty much untradable? 1980- Makes sense to me, bring him in and see if he can make the kind of throws you need in the west coast offense. I think Andy is very comfortable knowing he's going to get a high 1st rounder for Kolb (if he hasn't made a wink-wink deal already), and now he's looking for a qb who will be ready to take over for Vick in a few yrs.

I agree that Kafka is a likely backup for this year. Does anyone think that with at least a dozen teams looking for QBs that the veteran washup they would bring in would be a significant upgrade over Kafka? We are not winning this year if Vick goes down with either option (washed up veteran or Kafka) so I would rather spend those resources on areas of the team that could get us over the hump to a SB victory and hope that Vick survives since it is the only chance we have to bring it all home anyway. And we need upgrades in several areas (CB, LB, DL, & right side of the OL) if we are going to get there. That's alot of holes to fill without worrying about QB. Twocents
OK, I don't have a clue. But your looking for a backup QB that is gonna win down the road and your trading a QB that is gonna win Syperbowls. I guess the "Ham Ripper" (gee, I like that nickname)made a deal with Dietz/Watson for some, first round picks in the deli!!!! STEPHEN1988
Sheil, the Eagles will also work out Tyrod Taylor realtruth
This makes a ton of sense. Vick's got a couple more years playing at an elite level, so they should be thinking about and starting to develop his replacement now. It's the same pattern they set with McNabb. FKD215
As a Eagles fan living in Las Vegas, NV I can asure every other fan in here will be huge fan's of this kid if he get's drafted and gets a chance to learn Reid's system for a few years. Tremendous talent. You will definately be in for a treat with this kid. papabear702
