Eagles to check out QBs Cousins, Tannehill

The Eagles plan on hosting Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins for a visit, according to Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock has Cousins (6-3, 214) ranked as his fifth-best quarterback.

ESPN's Todd McShay thinks Cousins will be among seven quarterbacks taken in the first two rounds. Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are obviously expected to go one and two. And Ryan Tannehill of Texas A&M is also widely considered a first-round pick.

The next group appears to include Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden, Arizona State's Brock Osweiler, Cousins and Arizona's Nick Foles.

Cousins was a three-year starter with the Spartans, completing nearly 64 percent of his passes in 2011. He threw 66 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in his college career. Here's part of the NFL.com scouting report on Cousins:

He is a self-made guy, a tireless worker who has deficiencies that could hurt his pro potential. He is not a very strong deep thrower; while his velocity is adequate, his accuracy when throwing deep is questionable. Ultimately, Cousins is a guy who could get drafted based on his experience and intangibles, and will need to put on size and fine-tune certain throwing deficiencies to catch on at the next level.

And from Wes Bunting of the National Football Post:

A solid athlete who isn't overly impressive physically, but he has enough to make it in the NFL. Needs to take that next step in his understanding of the offense this year and cut down on the mental errors. However, he's a good kid, a hard worker and has some real similar qualities to some of the senior quarterbacks who came off the board this year (Ponder/Dalton). Nevertheless, his struggles with pressure could hold him back from ever becoming an NFL starter.

It would not surprise me if the Eagles drafted a quarterback in the first few rounds. They currently have Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards as candidates to back up Michael Vick, but I don't think that's good enough. They could add another veteran in the coming weeks. If they do draft a quarterback early, my guess is it'd be someone they project to have upside as a quality starter.

Earlier Thursday, I posted on how Asante Samuel stacked up in 2011. And on Friday, I will post the full list of reported Eagles draft visits.

UPDATE: The Eagles will hold a private workout with Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill in College Station, Texas, according to the Daily News. Tannehill held his pro day on Thursday.
