Eagles to host safety prospect Jackson

The Eagles will host safety prospect Janzen Jackson, according to Aaron Wilson of Scout.com.

Jackson (5-11, 188) played last year at McNeese State, after being dismissed from the Tennessee program, where he spent his first two college seasons.

In November, 2009, Jackson was one of three Tennessee players arrested for attempted armed robbery, but the charges against him were dropped.

Last August, Volunteers coach Derek Dooley dismissed Jackson from the program. Sources told ESPN.com that Jackson had substance abuse issues and failed multiple drug tests.

On the field, he started 22 of 23 games and had five interceptions as a sophomore, earning second-team All-SEC honors. Jackson ran a 4.64 40 at the combine. Here's part of what NFL.com's scouting report says about him:

Jackson is an electric athlete who could make an immediate impression at the next level. He is sudden, quick twitched and fast enough to cover the deep half of the field against the SEC's best receivers. Teams may be put off by the issues surrounding his transfer history, but Jackson is an undeniable athlete who could contribute early at both the corner and safety position.

Jackson projects to have a third-round value.

The Eagles have spent second-round picks on safeties Jaiquawn Jarrett and Nate Allen in each of the past two drafts. Jarrett saw limited playing time in 2011 and faces an important offseason if he wants to earn a starting spot.

Allen had an up and down 2011, but played his best football at the end of the season. Kurt Coleman could also compete for a starting job. And the Birds could still make a move in free agency. They've shown some level of interest in Yeremiah Bell, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Finally, once again, here is the master list of Eagles draft visits. I'll keep this updated throughout the next month.

And he is a midget. When will this team get some DB's who are 6ft. 2in at least to cover those RedZone tall guys every team seems to have??

Remember the days when character was an important attribute when evaluating potential Eagle players? Attempted armed robbery? And Sean s. is correct. He make Jarrett look like the Hulk.

What does the Eagles Brass cherish more than money and winning? Being perceived as the smartest one in the room. Their Egos have no bounds, and feeding this beast requires that you hire a 30 year old GM with no football experience. It makes you pass on the Jason Pierre Paul of the world, and go for the undersized high motor players that never work out. It makes you call the run pass option on 3rd and inches on the goal line. And you are so smart that you can take your Offensive Line coach and make him your Defensive Coordinator, and when it fails miserably you let him stay on a second year. This is known as the Gold Standard and believing that you are the smartest one in the room.

Character is what led to the pick of Mike Mamula over Warren Sapp.

True, and during his first training camp Mamula got arrested for exposing himself to a waitress, people tend to forget that one. This guy has got major problems on the character scale. Andy USED to be about character, but in the last few years he's gone the other way.

McNeese State has brought some strong talent to the Eagles. Remember 3rd round pick Bryan Smith? How many all-pro teams did he make?

Wow, it does not mean they are going to draft him. Teams bring in a lot of guys they don't draft. Just calm down and take a deep breath.

Armed robbery? Drug problem? Undersized? I'd say he's one torn Achilles or major knee injury away from being the perfect Eagles
    draft choice.

I liked the high character guys, even though we couldn't get them "on the cheap..."

I'm wondering if the getaway car in the attempted armed robbery had a high motor.

Shiel, he's on the lower side of average for an NFL free safety. And his 40 time was disappointing. Pro Football Weekly says he's lean, and more of a "finesse" safety, meaning he is not exactly a bloodthirsty hitter.

Idk, if you look at the list of guys the Eagles have hosted over the last two years, the one constant is that they don't draft any of them so I would take this with a grain of salt. As to warhounds astute observation that he will weigh less and be shorter than advertised, are you not aware that the combine has taken place and these measurements are all now accurate not the BS put out by the schools?

Maybe theyre looking at him as a corner but even if thats the case look at that awful 40 time.undersized armed robbery ATTEMPT.dumb as a rock or else it would be armed robbery and not attempted armed robbery slow and multiple drug infractions how many red flags is too many?

And they're only allowed a certain number of visits at the complex. they could've met this guy away from the building. they could have visited him. so even if they don't draft this punk theyve still wasted a visit.

And then a drunk Mamula pulled his pants down at a bar in training camp, and well, we all know how that ended.

Small size, small school and a bargain b/c of legal history. This guy has Nickels written all over him.

Snake - I was thinking exactly the same thing. Mrs. Roseman's little boy, Howie, will grab this guy in round 2 thus keeping alive the string of second round safety busts. He has a thing for safeties who are soft and slow and couldn't tackle a quadriplegic.

Don't worry. After two years in the Eagles weight room, he could be up to 192 or so.

Nate Allen played his best football at the end of the year eh? Was it his 0 forced fumbles or 0 fumble recoveries that really impressed you? How about his 0 sacks? Wait, he did have 1 interception in the very last game which gave him a whopping 2 for the year - a dreadful number for a free safety. I guess he did get spun around less time for big plays and TD the last few weeks so I guess I see your point.

Okay let me shed a little light on this one since I am a Tennessee man. Jackson is a good player more of a cover safety than an in the box guy. 4.6 is decent speed not blazing but he has good cover skills. He is light but you can add 10lbs on him. 5'11 isn't a midget Mr.Dawkins is 6'0. Relax people this secondary needs little speed and coverage skills at the safety position.

Just sign Bell. He's a known commodity. Has had over 100 tackles every year since 2007. Played for Bowles in Miami. What else could you want in a free agent (Besides being younger!)?

Sign him as a free agent, pretend he can play, then cut him unceremoniously AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I would love to know where the "analysts" find his electric athletecism - 188 lbs (gotta be 205) and 4.64 speed (I ran that in the 60s). This visit is a waste of time, just like the article.

No more "finess" safeties please, we already have too many p@$$is at that position. We are so incredibly soft in the secondary. Believe it or not, Samual was actually a BETTER tackler then Namdi and definitely DRC.

you dont like the high motor guys but you like the 50 sacks....gimme a break the def gonna be fine ...worry about the o-line wit no jason peters to keep vick clean and a lot of mccoy big plays come off the left side for a reason

Like my ol' coach would say......"he's too light in the tail to make a tackle." He won't be an Eagle, no worries.

So another ex-con in the making, substance abuser, and a third round value...sounds like a 1st round pick for the Reid-led team!
