Dungy: Vick's decision could be 'disastrous'

Tony Dungy played a critical role in getting Michael Vick back into the NFL after he served prison time.
Today he shared his thoughts on Vick's recent judgment and its possible consequences.
During an interview on The Dan Patrick Show, Dungy talked about Vick's decision-making.
"I have talked to Michael a few times, and again it becomes just an idea of decision-making and not putting yourself in harm's way," Dungy said. "He made some mistakes that he probably won't make again, hopefully. It was just not very good judgment and putting himself in a position where you're inviting the public to pay money and come to a birthday party, and you've got people there that you don't know who they are. You've got people that may be carrying weapons, people that are going to drink alcohol. And it's late at night. It's a recipe for failure."
Dungy said he first talked to Vick the day after the shooting incident. He said he has not heard if commissioner Roger Goodell plans to have a meeting with Vick or not.
"I think the bottom line is that he made some mistakes by being in the wrong place," Dungy said. "He left that place before anything really happened, but it could have been disastrous and may still be."
The Eagles have tried to make it clear that Vick was up-front with them and that none of the details that have surfaced since the incident have surprised them. Makes me wonder if Dungy was the one who told Vick he was best served to communicate with the team right away.
Dungy also talked about possible punishment from the league.
"Personally, I think that he didn't do a lot wrong legally," Dungy said. "Roger just has to look at their relationship and what his expectations were with Michael. If legally, you've got to stay aboveboard, then I think Michael did that. If you can't do anything that's going to put a bad face on the NFL, then I think Michael didn't do that."

* I'm going to take at Andy Reid in the next few days, but ESPN.com's Matt Mosley writes about him and whether his reputation is on the line in 2010:
If Reid can lead the Eagles deep into the playoffs with Kevin Kolb at quarterback, it will cement his status as one of the best coaches in the league. But this is an absolute high-wire act from the start. If the Eagles flame out and miss the playoffs, Reid would automatically be on the hot seat heading into 2011.
* Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News identifies the Eagles as one of seven teams who did well to solve their offseason problems:
They put a pretty good defense on the field last season, but there were some notable lapses in allowing big plays to develop in the running game and on short-to-medium passes. The Eagles loaded up on defensive depth in the draft, injecting youth to help themselves on the outside. It will make a big difference to have a healthy Stewart Bradley back roaming the middle.

I really do not get the all the print this subject is receiving. He had a birthday party at a pretty decent place in a pretty decent area. This could have happened if the party were at afamily or friends house. Yes, he's an ex-con on probation, but I don't see where his decision was so detrimental to his perceived NFL come back. Comment removed.- This is the reason why no other team wanted Vick. He didnt even make it one full year without doing something stupid. Goodell is gonna suspend him and the eagles should just realease him before they look even dumber. More stupidy from Reid to take such a risky player and never utilize him, and then not pay attention to what he is doing in the offseason. Another failed Andy Reid idea. horrible failure. He will NEVER win the SB. NEVER.
Reid will not be on the hot seat no matter what the team does. He's the best coach this city has ever seen, in any sport in my opinion. He can stay as long as he wants to. His in game play calling is suspect but in the end he wins. That's all I care about. I think Kolb may start off with the weight of the world on his shoulders for the first few games and then he will settle down and have a great season. Can't wait!! sima_down_nah
The only lesson Vick hasn't learned is that a 'real' QB in the NFL knows how to make good decisions on the field. He has never been able to do that, and I doubt he ever will. Take the lose and the bad press but just cut him. PhillyFanSouth- Dungy should stick to coaching, rather than be a go to mentor for the disenfranchised.
- who cares, get rid of him
As for Vick: You can take the boy out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the boy. BillyFortune- @CharlieGarner25 - Andy Reid can't even pay attention to what his own kids are doing. Can't expect him to keep an eye on Vick.
- I don't blame Reid for this. MV is a grown man who at this point should be very aware of what he should or should not do. He did nothing wrong legally. It was clearly a financial scheme to make money off of his fame. MV is not a factor for the Eagles; so I don't care if we keep him or cut him. Reid is not without faults, but he helped get the Eagles back to respectability after some terrible years. Anyone want Mike McCormack, Marion Campbell, Rich Kotite, or Ray Rhodes at the helm? I'll take Reid over most coaches and I am looking forward to rooting for my Eagles, regardless of the challenges. JohnFC
- lol, good point. yea he cant keep track of his own diet very well either. or how many pass plays he has called... or how many timeouts he has
The hypocrites on these message boards are STAGGERING!!! We live in a world of opinions..I understand. The problem is that most of the idiot opinions come from anonymous (coward) posters who may/may not have had a few legal problems of their own...maybe a DU/WI or two..probably worse. GET A LIFE PEOPLE!! And "CleanupPhilly", when did you become a probation/parole officer? If Vick really "violated", do you think his real P.O./The Eagles/NFL need you to point it out? They're probably all over it, but that would be their JOB! Maybe you should find a real one. UseYourBrain
