Holmgren on McNabb; draft nuggets

POSTED: Friday, February 26, 2010, 10:51 AM

Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren does not understand the criticism aimed at Donovan McNabb.

Here's what he said when ESPN.com's Matt Mosley told him a segment of fans are ready to see McNabb go:

"I'm astounded by that," Holmgren said. "I'm like most of the folks around the league. With all that he's done for that team over the long haul...I guess part of it's that he hasn't been able to get over the hump [and win a Super Bowl]."

The Daily News' Paul Domowitch yesterday included the Browns on his list of possible landing spots for McNabb.

The Inquirer's Jeff McLane had a good piece today on the Eagles possibly looking offensive tackle in the draft. But specifically, someone who could provide versatility.

Wes Bunting of the National Football Post had the Eagles going with tackle/guard John Jerry from Ole Miss in his first mock draft.

You can watch our video (second in the playlist) where I peppered Bunting with draft questions. Below is a sampling of the Q&A.

Q: Why do you have the Rams taking QB Sam Bradford with the top pick?

A: Well, it's a quarterback-driven league. Quarterbacks win in the NFL. You look at the St. Louis Rams right now. Even If they take a guy like [Nebraska DT] Ndamukong Suh, maybe they win five games next year, maybe they win four. But they need a quarterback that they can build around. That's what Sam Bradford gives them. A smart, mature kid who is accurate with the football. And he's that building block St. Louis needs.

Q: Who's the most intriguing first-round prospect? A guy who could go high in the first round or who could drop significantly?

A: I think that's Anthony Davis, the offensive tackle from Rutgers. Davis is as physically gifted as any left tackle in this year's draft. He has the upside to be one of the top players. However, is lazy at times. There are concerns about his character. Will he put the work in to be great? That's the biggest concern with Davis, but the physical skill set is there.

Q: Why do you think Jerry could be a good fit for the Eagles at No. 24?

A: Jerry can come in and fill a role at right tackle. You can kick him inside at guard. He was one of the dominant players at this year's Senior Bowl. Big, physical, versatile. He can fill in a lot of holes for the Eagles, step in from Day 1 and figure out how to get in that starting lineup quickly.

I also asked Bunting about possible defensive players at that spot. He mentioned the following defensive linemen: Florida's Carlos Dunlap (who he didn't sound too high on), South Florida's Jason Pierre-Paul and Tennessee's Dan Williams.

In his most recent mock draft, Bunting has the Eagles going with Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer. That would be a bit surprising. But then again, I didn't see them going wide receiver in the first round last year.

lonewolf: your opinion on Green Bay/Seattle is valid? Look, you said, "if Favre was here, blah, blah, blah." Here's Favre's top 5 WR in his career: 1. Sterling Sharpe 2. Donald Driver 3. Antonio Freeman 4. Greg Jennings 5. Robert Ferguson. Who was McNabb's top 5? 1. Owens 2. Desean 3. Curtis (?) 4. Thrash (???) 5. Pinkston (?????). Oh yeah, we'll throw in Dorsey Levens and Ahman Green for Favre. I love Westbrook, but Green and Levens were far better inside runners. You're wrong, I'm right.

Let Holmgren deal with him! He will find out in a short period of time that he is one of the most innacurate passers in the sport, and he dosen't read defenses well enough to win in the playoff big championship teams. He would be a good backup somewhere and that is really all he deservers at this point. First order of business we have to get him and Reid out of Philly and quick as possible to have any kind of future with this team. We'll at least we got the Phillies and the Flyers who are starting to play like a playoff team in which no top team wants to face them in the first round. They ae a very dagerous team who might shock a lot of people!

How many SB has Favre won since Holmgren? None. How many did he go to since Holgren? None. Bottom line is, both of them were fortune to team up and have Reggie and Green on their side. McNabb and Reid won without a Reggie and a good RB (Westbrook was only good for 2 full season). But they have not been able to go over the hump yet as their offensive and defensive stars did not line up at the same time.

The silly thing here is that you people actually think nobody in the NFL wants McNabb. You are dead wrong about that. If the Eagles actually came out and said he was available there are probably ten teams who would jump at the chance to get him. The failure of the franchise to win a title is more the fault of the defense than the fault of the offense in general, and McNabb in particular. Last season was an abberation due the the crazy amount of injuries to key players. The2008 NFC Championship game against the Cardinals is a better example. McNabb drove the team to the lead late in the 4th quarter and the D didn't stop Warner's last chance. Even then, if Curtis had caught that pass that he was being tackled during (and there was no flag) McNabb would have put the team in position to possibly tie it up. JJ, God bless him, lost that game by playing a stupid rookie (Demps) who wasn't mature enough to play smart (late hit on Warner), and could not cover well enough (the TD play right before halftime)to merit such an amount of playing time. Why aren't you guys mad at Demps? That idiot hurt the team a lot more in that game then the QB did.

Hate towards McNabb is brewed by talk radio shows and their need for rating based on a small brain dead group of fans. Rest of the fans are watching, paying and enjoying the 11 win seasons and hoping to have a real defense next year.

No only has #5 not been able to deliver a SB win...he hasn't even been able to get there but once in 5 tries....I'd say he chokes in other big games, too, not just the SB.....pathetic.
