Holmgren on McNabb; draft nuggets

POSTED: Friday, February 26, 2010, 10:51 AM

Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren does not understand the criticism aimed at Donovan McNabb.

Here's what he said when ESPN.com's Matt Mosley told him a segment of fans are ready to see McNabb go:

"I'm astounded by that," Holmgren said. "I'm like most of the folks around the league. With all that he's done for that team over the long haul...I guess part of it's that he hasn't been able to get over the hump [and win a Super Bowl]."

The Daily News' Paul Domowitch yesterday included the Browns on his list of possible landing spots for McNabb.

The Inquirer's Jeff McLane had a good piece today on the Eagles possibly looking offensive tackle in the draft. But specifically, someone who could provide versatility.

Wes Bunting of the National Football Post had the Eagles going with tackle/guard John Jerry from Ole Miss in his first mock draft.

You can watch our video (second in the playlist) where I peppered Bunting with draft questions. Below is a sampling of the Q&A.

Q: Why do you have the Rams taking QB Sam Bradford with the top pick?

A: Well, it's a quarterback-driven league. Quarterbacks win in the NFL. You look at the St. Louis Rams right now. Even If they take a guy like [Nebraska DT] Ndamukong Suh, maybe they win five games next year, maybe they win four. But they need a quarterback that they can build around. That's what Sam Bradford gives them. A smart, mature kid who is accurate with the football. And he's that building block St. Louis needs.

Q: Who's the most intriguing first-round prospect? A guy who could go high in the first round or who could drop significantly?

A: I think that's Anthony Davis, the offensive tackle from Rutgers. Davis is as physically gifted as any left tackle in this year's draft. He has the upside to be one of the top players. However, is lazy at times. There are concerns about his character. Will he put the work in to be great? That's the biggest concern with Davis, but the physical skill set is there.

Q: Why do you think Jerry could be a good fit for the Eagles at No. 24?

A: Jerry can come in and fill a role at right tackle. You can kick him inside at guard. He was one of the dominant players at this year's Senior Bowl. Big, physical, versatile. He can fill in a lot of holes for the Eagles, step in from Day 1 and figure out how to get in that starting lineup quickly.

I also asked Bunting about possible defensive players at that spot. He mentioned the following defensive linemen: Florida's Carlos Dunlap (who he didn't sound too high on), South Florida's Jason Pierre-Paul and Tennessee's Dan Williams.

In his most recent mock draft, Bunting has the Eagles going with Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer. That would be a bit surprising. But then again, I didn't see them going wide receiver in the first round last year.

Yea Mike. Winning the Superbowl is the only thing that matters here. Guess his confusion comes from all the losing seasons he spent in Seattle. Air Guitar is a new X-Games sport out there this year, right?

Everyone is always hammering us for wanting to see McNabb go. If he's so great, these other teams should be jumping to take him off our hands. We need change, nothing against #5, except that he's a goofball and cracks under pressure.

The job Holmgren did in Seattle totally invalidates anything he says about the sport of football.

Living in SEC country, I know that Perry is a really good player. His name was highly mentioned in all the games I saw Ole Miss play in. Dan Williams is a really good player, too. He made plays. Lastly, Dwyer was really a tough, physical runner at Tech. He was in the triple option system, but I think he'll be very good.

lonewolf, wow, first stroking kolb now favre? favre is a hack, look at his body of work the last decade, how many times has the last pass hes thrown of the season been an interception. the last three seasons for sure, and lets not forget the infamous 4th and 26 game when dawkins was fielding favre's passes like they were punts. bash mcnabb and slurp kolb all you want, but favre is an overrated clown who is incredibly selfish and reckless with the football. eagles win less games if they have favre rather than mcnabb the last 10 years.

gho_matt....Couldn't agree more with your post. Everyone sticks up for him and tells us how great he is, but nobody wants him. Additionally, why would McNabb want to stay where he's not wanted? Wouldn't he want to go somewhere and prove everyone wrong?? I think the rest of the league wants him to stay right here in Philly. And why not, if you have someone on your rival that's continually going to beat themselves internally, then that's better than having to beat them from the outside.

lonewolf: So let's get straight: Holmgren's opinion is invalid because of Favre, but Bernard Hopkin's opinions are solid? The same Bernard Hopkins who said, "A billionaire can do whatever he wants except kill somebody."

We finally agree Wolf, Holmgren should worry about his own team and how he is going to turn that train wreck of an organization around. Now, as for Favre winning SB's that 5 couldn't, come on man.

ha, what a donovan hater. i thought that problem with dononvan is he chokes in big games. i'll grant that favre has a superbowl, but so does trent dilfer and brad johnson. look at favre's playoff record, sub-500. look at his td to int total the last decade. favre chokes in big games. this has nothing to do with the donovan, hate him if you want, but favre tosses picks like its his job in big games. and i like how you twist the facts to say the vikes lost cause of the coin flip, how about they had a chance to win in regulation and favre threw a horrible throw that even high school qbs know not to make. guy is punk plain and simple. you can say donovan sucks worse if you want, but favre is choke artist plain and simple.
