Did Aikman overreact to McNabb's call?

POSTED: Monday, January 12, 2009, 9:16 AM
With about three minutes left in yesterday's win against the Giants, Donovan McNabb scrambled out of bounds to the Giants' sideline and picked up their phone, drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

After the game, McNabb said he was just having fun, but he apologized for costing his team the 15 yards.

However, if you were watching on TV, you probably noticed that the move really seemed to bother Fox analyst Troy Aikman.

"You know, sometimes I don't know what runs through that guy's head," Aikman said. "I mean, that's silly."

I've posted the YouTube clip below. So what do you think? Did Aikman overreact? I generally like the ex-Cowboys quarterback as an analyst but thought his reaction was kind of odd.

Personally, I think McNabb probably shouldn't have done it, but wasn't it pretty harmless?

Disclaimer: Before you roast me for focusing on this when the Eagles are one win away from the Super Bowl, check out my 10 observations from the game. I'll be back later today with more thoughts from the divisional round. Just wanted to see what your reaction to the Aikman/McNabb thing was.

Here's the clip:

I think he was calling TO, or maybe ordering pizza for the ride to Phoenix next week. Aikman is still mad about when Buddy's team laid him out everytime Dallas played the Eagles

I thought it was another attempt by McNabb to do something funny, even though he's not funny. I like Aikman as an analyst.

I think it was dumb. He shouldn't have done it. Especially when the guy next to him (who he ran into) was patting him on the back and being a good sport. He then picks up the phone right in front of him instead of keeping his head. On the other hand, Aikman said, "Sometimes I don't know what goes through that guy's head." I think that comment was uncalled for because Donovan is one of the most well behaved and well spoken guys in football. Donovan played it off really well at the end of the game, claiming responsibility and immediately saying that it was a stupid mistake, that he was caught up in the moment of the game.

Keep waiting, 3rick. Utley owes an apology to nobody. The question is will McNabb apologize when he tanks this week? The last month has been all smoke and mirrors and when it clears, we'll be stuck with both Donovan and Andy next season.

It was stupid and if T.O. or Ocho Cinco would have done it we would have flipped out. It took a 3rd and 1 and made it a 3rd and 16....we were running out the clock trying to keep our drive going and their O off the field.....Giants got it back and our D has to go to work again. What if Dawkins tears a hammy chasing after a WR on a meaningless play and we lose him for the SB? Stupid, immature move.

Who cares? The Eagles won. Move on to more important issues.

I don't think it should have been a penalty, just like when Favre carries WRs after a TD. And now McNabb has no class, please, don't be stupid.

I think Aikman overreacted. Donovan was having fun. He's smiling and the Birds are winning. Aikman and Buck are small and petty. Let's go Eagles.

Personally, I understand you should enjoy the game, however Donna-von laughs/smiles during the game too much for me. We're serious about our philly sports. Tell Donna to consistently throw accurate passes, move the chians by running when no ones open, win a superbowl, then he can smile and play practical jokes all he likes. He is too silly for me!! By the way...3rick Chase doesn't have to apologize, you probably cuss around your own children, they've heard it before.

So let me understand, now it's become what if Dawkins tore a hamstring because someone picked up a phone? And Lonewolf talking about his great white hopes again, oh wait you liked Randall Cunningham more than Donovan McNabb. That says it all right there. Let's talk class now, Staubach got into a fistfight with his backup QB, Warner refused to go into a game when he was with the Rams, or Peyton Manning talking badly about his offensive line after a loss, he picked up a phone, got a stupid penalty, it's better than Eli throwing horrible fadeaway interceptions.
