Reporter: Dawkins deal not official

POSTED: Friday, February 27, 2009, 7:26 PM

I just got off the phone with David White, the San Francisco Chronicle reporter who posted a couple hours ago, saying Brian Dawkins had agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos.

Here's the deal: White is not reporting that Dawkins has signed a contract with the Broncos. He actually never reported that. White is told by a source that Dawkins has "agreed to terms" on a deal. Many of us took this to mean a deal had been finalized, but there is obviously a major difference if you look at the wording closely.

As of right now, no one (that I've found) has reported that Dawkins has signed a deal. And White is still the only reporter I've found that says Dawkins has agreed to terms. The bottom line is that it appears nothing has been finalized, although White sticks by his source that a deal is in place.

White said I'm the only person from Philadelphia who hasn't cursed at him today, and I appreciate him taking the time to get in touch with me after I sent him an initial e-mail.

He ends his most recent blog post with:

And please, Brian Dawkins, sign the deal with the Broncos and don't go Bart Scott on me.

So, to clarify White's report one last time: Dawkins has agreed to terms, but he still has the option to change his mind.

Keep it locked on philly.com for the latest on this story from The Inquirer and Daily News.

PLEASE SAY IT AINT SO!!!!! I Love the Eagles, I will always watch and Scream but I cannot imagine watching without B Dawk! He is by far my fav all-time Eagle, I'm So Bummed out! I figured the way he played last year, his trip to the Pro Bowl, would keep him here for at least one more year. Every off season I want to tear my hair out with the decisions made by the guys on top. If its true, we will miss you Dawk more than any other! Keep Playin hard and spreading the Gospel we love you!!!!!!!

How can you let Brian Dawkins go. I don't know if the eagles owner is that stupid or that cheap. There is no reason they should of let this get to this point. Brian Dawkins is one of the best players in NFL history and this is a big disapointment not to sign him to a contract.

Here is what the Denver Post reported this evening: "While every free agent player who visited the Broncos today arrived with the parameters of a deal already in place, there's a chance Dawkins could give the Eagles another chance. Dawkins, 35, has spent his entire 13-year career in Philadelphia, earning seven Pro Bowl honors." If this is the case, then the deal hasn't been finalized or signed yet, otherwise the Denver Post would have reported it. Ok, White did not say the deal had been signed, but everyone including GrandMa Moses is quoting him as saying the deal is already done, which it is not, so he should choose his words more carefully.

Good job in free agency philly, what are you thinking. Brian Dawkins is a great player and will be in the hall of fame. This tells me how cheap this team and a move I will never forget. This is a nightmare to all eagles fans and no respect to the players.

Dawkins willed this defense to the playoffs this year just like Garcia did (remember him?)a few years ago before he was shown the door. Losing Runyon and Dawk would leave McNabb the leader of the team by default. Anyone else wondering what was said in this alleged meeting ESPN reported and that the Eagles and McNabb are saying didn't happen???? I know Dawkins is up there in age, but who do you replace him with? You just don't let this caliber of a person leave the team. They will never replace him! I'm with whoever wrote that they haven't felt this way since the baseball strike. I have about had it with the direction of this team. I can live without them.

sheil-check w/your new boss florio on this one. according to his latest post on his temporary nbcsports blog the dawkins deal is done. sad to say but the eagles just lost their heart. maybe his skills were eroding, but w/48 million left under the cap couldn't we have found a way to keep him in eagle green til he retired?

This is just plain wrong. The backbone of the team for 12 years. B-Dawk deserves much more respect than this franchise just gave him. There is no way to spin this at all.

Two words . . . Taylor Mays (spelling). The absolute stud safety from USC said his idol is B-Dawk. Let's keep Dawk around and do anything we possibly can to bring Mays here next year. Love ya Dawkins, you epitomize what this franchise and city should be about. By the way, Donovan, take notes, Eagles lose, and first thing Dawkins does is apologize to the fans. Great man.
