Could Birds have interest in Chad Johnson?

POSTED: Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 12:08 AM

Quick little nugget before we call it a night here at MTC.

ESPN's Michael Smith said on NFL Live tonight that he's hearing the Eagles have interest in Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson.

Rather than paraphrase what Smith is reporting, here's exactly what he said so you can decide for yourself whether this is just a rumor or something more.

"I am hearing there is interest in Chad Johnson," Smith said. "Now there's been some back and forth as to whether or not he is officially on the market. I think everybody in Cincinnati has signed off on moving Chad Johnson except for owner Mike Brown. The Eagles could be in the picture. They have two first-round picks. They need a receiver."

Note: It was brought to my attention that I could have been clearer with the above quote. Smith was asked a direct question about the Eagles when he said, "I am hearing there is interest in Chad Johnson." So in my interpretation, he was directly talking about the Birds, not just saying there was general interest around the league in Johnson.

The other name Smith threw out there was Bills offensive tackle Jason Peters.

Our beat guys have mentioned Peters' name in the past, and according to Smith, the Eagles have "engaged in serious discussions" with the Bills about him. Per Smith, those talks could heat up again as the draft approaches.

Remember, Smith reported earlier this offseason that Donovan McNabb had met with Eagles management and wanted to see what weapons the Eagles would add before looking at a contract extension.

Stay tuned to philly.com to see if the Johnson rumors can be either confirmed or refuted.

And we will of course be back bright and early Wednesday morning with more.

Now that's news, but I wouldn't give a 1st round pick for Chad either. I very confident that the Eagles are going 2 do good this season with the receiving corps they have. I would rather spend a pick in someone who is going to help me in the future (Moreno, Pett,).

True. I would love to see them make a trade and move up, taking Crabtree. Admittedly wishful thinking at best. But the game is so often decided by the line, can't blame them for taking care of that. I miss Jon Runyan already.

I look forward to the Eagles selecting Michael Oher and Moreno in the 1st round. AR will suprise us this draft.-johnnyu

I say go for Chad. He is still better than what we have and is a true legit #1 with the right QB throwing at him. It always comes down to what we are willing to offer which is usally not much. AR has only suprised me in the draft in a very bad way, by not picking anyone that anyone else would have picked in the spot. Crabtree will be gone in the top 6 or 7 and we dont have one chance of moving up that high with the two low 1st round picks. Then there is always "nickles" Banner that will not let us pick a high round skill position.

Michael Smith has zero proof the Eagles are interested in Ocho Cinco. Like everyone else, he brings up the Birds because they have two first round picks. These reporters don't know squat which is why they use the word "could" in everything they write or say.

How about Chad Johnson AND Pettigrew with the other first round pick? Then trade up (With some of the 5th round picks?) early in the 2nd round and take a running back there? Johnson, DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis and Pettigrew playing with Westbrook? Might be an explosive offense.

Age + Ocho-tude = damaged goods. If cincy wants to move him, we can get him for much less than a 1st round pick. Remember what we paid for TO when he talked his way out of San Fran? I say do it. Take a chance, but don't overpay when you don't have to.

If the Eagles trade for any WR, they'll trade for Boldin or Edwards before Johnson. Johnson is a major diva and a headcase. It's very unlikely that the Eagles will take a WR or TE in the first round. All you have to do is look at Reid's draft history to see what positions he values. He's not going to spend a 1st round pick on a blocking TE. He's not going to draft a rookie WR in the 1st round when he's got Jackson, Curtis, Brown and Avant. Regardless of the personal feelings of fans, Curtis is productive when healthy and had over 1,000 yards two seasons ago. Reid likes him. Reid also likes Avant a lot as a slot receiver. Again, I know a lot of fans don't like Reggie Brown, and with LJ gone he's moved up the totem pole of dislike, but the guy is young and he's got the talent to be a solid #2 receiver. He's gotten side-tracked with injuries combined with some inconsistency but Reid still likes him and that's all that counts. So I think Reid truthfully believes he's ok at WR but he'd take a game-changer like Boldin if he could get him. He's not going to spend a first-round pick on a WR unless they trade for Jason Peters. I think that's the most likely trade option. Trade one of the first-rounders in a deal for Peters and use the other first-rounder on a RB (hopefully Moreno). If they can't get Peters, they'll use the other 1st rounder on a tackle. If they can get Peters, then they might be willing to take a WR in the first-round.

Isn't this the same time and age we went and got T.O.? And what happen that year we got him? Super Bowl? I hope they get 85, maybe he can help D-Jack improve his game. A game that already has great quailities!

Forget Ocho Stinko! If they go get Peters that would be more reasonable than trying for an aging WR. We have more than enough WRs right now. No, they aren't #1's but with them ALL healthy, they are more than able to hold down the WR position. An OT is more importnat for McWhiner's safety and health throughout this year! I wouldn't hold much to what Mike Smith says. He's just another talking head who no doubt heard something from some other talking head and figured that he would put it out nationally. Stop sweatin' Eagles fans. Let's just hold on to see what the FO does. So far, they have disappointed us. Think they'll do it again? Yup!

If the Eagles got Chad, they still wouldn't have a big physical wide receiver who can go get the ball. That's what they've been lacking since Mike Quick.

I don't think you give up a first round draft pick for a aging WR who can be potential distraction to your ball club. I know he and Donovan are close friends but in modern day sports that mean nothing when it comes to egos. Now a 2nd rounder for Chad might be worth the headache.

there is no receiver that plays for the Bengals named Chad Johnson. he legally changed his last name, however stupid it may sound, to Ocho Cinco. being a "reporter" you might want to get your facts straight.

Seriously? You people actually think there is a chance of the Eagles getting a legit number 1 receiver? Where have you been for the past ten years? There is a better chance the Flyers will trade for a receiver before the Eagles do.

T.O was not a problem until the Eagles got cheap on him! The man played on one leg in the super bowl and still out played the rest of the bums we had at wideout.

Ocho Cinco doesn't have much left. I wouldn't give more than a third for him. Jason Peters on the other hand is definitely worth one of our ones. He's better than any tackle we could draft, is still young and will start right away.

Thanks, Sheek. Anyone that is "happy with what we have" is on the same denial medication that Reid and Baskett are clearly crushing up and snorting. Once again: Curtis and D. Jax are good reeivers but it is going to take an already PROVEN stand-out to make them GREAT secondary receivers with Donovan. The Birds have a lot of young talent on the line, McNabb is in his early thirties, as will be Westbrook, and they need another T.O. THIS YEAR! Crabtree will not get them to the Super Bowl his rookie year, defenses are not going to worry about him and change their game plan; and THAT is what is needed, a guy who frightens coordinators. Bottom line.

When have the Eagles ever done anything exciting in the draft? Fat Boy will stick to what he thinks he knows best, draft a lineman in the first round. One on offense and one on defense between eating Big Mac's in the War Room.

eagles are not getting boldin b/c he'll cost too much if he's even available. Ocho cinco will come much much cheaper and therefore this report is probably true given donovan's relationship with him. They will spend for Peters though. I wouldn't mind ocho and peters, think that makes them a better team.

The O line should be their priority this off season. They have an aging QB who will need protection to be effective with the receivers they have. I would give up one of their 1st rd picks and maybe a couple of their 5th for this guy. He's a stud who will be around for the next 5 years. And I'd address TE before signing Johnson.

Johnson would not be "nice" He is old at 31 and his production is way down. He cannot get out of his own way anymore, let alone get off the line. We need a receiver like Boldin. He can Get off the line. He is Big and strong. If you spend a number 1 for a WR, make it a number 1 not an ocho.

First of all, for all you shortsighted small minded sport fans out there, for the past three years Chad Johnson, has lived the life of luxury with the Bengals, he's been underused so much, it was probably like a vacation for him, sooo dont compare ages with T.O... Secondly, he's an experienced veteran WR with speed and good hands that could be maximized by any professional NFL team, with decent counterparts, such as the Eagles.. and provide mentorship for Jackson and possibly a rookie WR gotten in the draft, thirdly he's personal friends of McNabb which makes a great combination, could be gotten for less than a 1st rounder.. cause he's been unhappy in Cincy, and needs to be set free... he easily has 2-3 years of productivity left in him... sure Boldin will be pricey.. but consider this... get Chad for a few years, two first round selections.. possibly a WR further down, and figure a way to get Peters... and the Eagles would process one of the finest off-season tradings ever.

I don't want Ocho unless it's for a Randy Moss price like a 4th or two 5's, otherwise I'm not interested. Too much baggage and is a possible cancer in the locker room like TO. He's not worth it unless is real cheap! I don't want to lose a number 1 for Peters, even though I think he will help, but how about 2 5's and a 6 this year a number 1 next year?

lets see so far Boldin, Edwards & now Chad Johnson- this is just the local media getting the fan's hopes high for a big letdown. Face it--the Eagles will not deal their draft picks for a WR-so getting all hyped up about something that won't happen will just spread your venom. I could see them going after Peters though. OL & DL-thats where the Eagles are willing to deal.

I agree completely with the comments and draft speculations by 'JimG' Andy will attend to the meat and potatoes of his offense FIRST in this off-season. He has already fixed up Right OT, while keeping options available within the team and with the draft, or possible trade, for Left OT. Money says that he gets the best RB available with the first pick, assuming it has not been dealt away. If it (or they) have been dealt, it means either Boldin or Jason Peters will join the club. My hope is Peters, and a GOOD RB will be wearing Midnight Green next year. That would leave them with two positions that really need an upgrade..........Fullback (Yeah, I know....but I don't think he is a FULLBACK, he's an all-around type) and A badly needed BLOCKING type TE. If by some miracle or other all this comes to pass, I'd start thinking about the temperature on parade day. If they only cover two of those needs, I think Wild-Card. If none of it gets done, it's time for Andy to step down.

Can anybody blame COC for wanting to leave Cincy? They just signed Tank Johnson ferchrisakes. They never learn. If we can get him on the cheap draft pick-wise I'm OK with it but not at the cost of a 1st, 2nd or 3rd. If he's a pal of DM I'm for it even more. I don't think AR will go through the draft without making an attempt to finally get DM some weapons. They definitely have to get a RB in the first since they haven't addressed that position at all in FA [other than Weaver]and I could live with Peters or Pettigrew with the other 1st. Add COC and we're much improved so long as he flies right.

I think most are missing the point here, I think this is a calculated move by the Mcnabb camp to plant his wishlist when he KNOWS the team won't make a move for any of these wr's, and when 85 is traded to the skins, boldin is traded to the gmen, and bray Edwards traded to the Cowboys. Mcnabb then can officialy ask for his outright release or trade as no weapons were achieved.

Chad can be had for a 4th round pick. Let's not forget that he's 31 years old, disgruntled, and coming off a poor season and injuries. The Eagles should have drafted Chad instead of Freddie Mitchell! Signing Peters would definitely be a great move!!!

Chad Johnson would be a disaster. We would be much better suited with Braylon Edwards. Kevin Curtis doesent have it anymore, there is an interesting article at BirdsDaily.com that outlines his production trends

Ahhh, there is nothing like the drivel that comes out of the 24 hour news industry. Why do we even entertain these ideas? These reporters are only packaging hearsay that stems from fan desires. I don’t think the media is trying to be deceptive it is just their stupidity is equal to our gulliblity.

28th and Herremans seems a bit much for Peters. I would rather see Peters here than CJ. TO was/is a much better wide receiver than johnson, so don't be making those comparisons. Johnson would probably be terrible for DeSean's development.

As team president, Banner has proven to rather want to make money then win championships, as he is behind the lose of many free agents such as Brian Dawkins, Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor, Duce Staley, Tra Thomas, Brian Mitchell, Derrick Burgess, and Jeff Garcia. - Wikipedia When wiki actually rips someone you know it's bad. No way the Eagles reach out to get someone like Chad.

Oh Hell to the No on Ocho....Besides all that the Eagles front office is scared of these characters with an edge. This is not a priority. Maybe in the second round. Peters would seal the deal and this should be worked out ASAP!!! Worth a 1st Rounder
