Clemson DE says he has workout with Eagles

POSTED: Sunday, March 14, 2010, 9:07 PM

Some links to get to this evening. If you missed it earlier, we posted another entry in our Draft Diary series with South Florida wide receiver Carlton Mitchell. Mitchell gave us an inside look at the first day of the combine. We'll do the other days later this week.

Now, the links:

* Clemson LB/DE Ricky Sapp is doing his own draft diary with The Times and Democrat (S.C.). In his most recent post, Sapp said he has two workouts next week - one with the Eagles and one with the Patriots. He writes:

During these workouts, I just have to show these teams why I am the best defensive end/outside linebacker fit for their squad! I plan on doing just that!

A little liberal with the usage of the exclamation point, but we're willing to look past that.

Sapp is listed at 6-foot-4, 252 pounds. He had five sacks as a senior. Wes Bunting of the National Football Post has Sapp ranked as the seventh-best outside linebacker in the draft. It is presumed that he would play OLB in a 3-4 or DE in a 4-3.

Keep in mind that this doesn't mean much. The Eagles will work out several players between now and the draft. And when it's their turn to pick, it's entirely possible that the player selected will be someone who they never worked out.

I remember last year, however, many of you wanted all the reported visits/workouts in one place, so we'll plan on putting that list together again this year.

Tip of the cap to Bleeding Green Nation for the Sapp link.

* The Browns, long rumored to be one of the teams that could be interested in one of the Eagles' QBs, have signed Jake Delhomme. They also dealt for Seneca Wallace last week. So, in short, they're set at QB. They might not be strong at QB. But given the money they're paying Delhomme, it would appear highly unlikely that the Browns aren't going to make a major move there.

* The Browns also made a couple other deals. They sent Brady Quinn to the Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2011, a conditional pick in 2012 and running back Peyton Hillis. Cleveland also dealt linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to Oakland for what Clark Judge of CBSSports.com is saying is a third-round pick. I wrote about Wimbley last week. Among D-linemen or hybrid LBs in the past five seasons, he's one of only two players to post double-digit sacks as a rookie.

* LaDainian Tomlinson is headed to the Jets. Per ESPN's Afam Schefter, the deal is two years, worth $5.1M, but it could be worth as much as $5.6M.

* Ex-Eagles center Hank Fraley has agreed to terms with the Rams, his agent Ralph Cindrich wrote on Twitter.

* And finally, ex-Eagles safety Sean Jones will visit the Titans, according to the Nashville City Paper.

Enough with the undersized Defensive Ends already. 252 lbs? Does anyone else find it ironic that the Eagles FO act as if they've figured something out? They continue to apply their broken formulas in an attempt to re-invent the game. (Small D-line men "Throw as many bullets...", Small RBs, Versatile Offensive line "Tackles who can play Guard", Not signing veteran players, etc). How has these strategies worked out? If I were Andy Reid, I'd probably start trying strategies opposite of the ones I've used in the past pretty soon here.

Totally agree. He's too light. There are at least three other guys that are bigger and better.

Sheil, you're wrong because you so badly want McNabb to stay. They only gave Delhomme a two year deal. There's no way they plan on going with Delhomme as their starting QB. That's suicidal. They signed him as an experienced backup. They're still looking for an answer at QB. C'mon Sheil, Tom Heckert is not an idiot.

Furthermore, if they signed Delhomme to be their starting QB why no press conference? Delhomme's agent said that he would be continuing his career with the Browns but didn't elaborate. The Browns didn't even announce the signing. Obviously, they're not handing Delhomme the starting QB job. Sheil, you're dead wrong this time.

Holmgren said that he did NOT promise Delhomme a starting job. They signed Delhomme in case they can't get a better solution at QB. He's a backup option, Sheil. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/03/cleveland_browns_sign_quarterb.html

I'm so glad that Banner was so crafty with the salary cap by letting veteran FA's walk, signing late round players to long deals and trading out of the 1st round several times just to avoid paying 1st round money. All of those years he was the smartest man on the earth and now without a salary cap all of the teams who overspent and would be over the cap are now allowed to cut contracts as if they were never signed. Oh well, at least the coffers have runneth over. I sure do wish the Eagles had stock because the dividend return on investment spent is through the roof.

The eagles are trying to address their most pressing needs through the draft. This team is about to get very young The year they went t the superbowl they were exceptional on both sides of the ball. The past two years the offense has got better while the defense has got really bad. You can blame mcnabb all you want but he did not allow 58 points in two games against th cowboys. football is a team sport and the eagles lost as a team. This team needs to shore up a couple areas on the defensive side of the ball and they will be okay.

Bryan Smith, Matt McCoy, Chris Gocong...enough already with these smallish combo DE/LB's. It's obviously not working.

Our beloved fans need to relax. We didn't draft this guy, at least not yet. Eagles will have a lot of poeple work out that they don't draft. Lets hold our animosity or praise until after the draft.

Players to target in the 1st round: C-Markice Pouncey, DE-Brandon Graham, S-Earl Thomas, T-Iaputi. Pouncey and Graham would have to fall from where they are projected to be taken, but at least one of these players should be available when the Eagles pick. Pouncey is my preference of these guys, he can play center or guard at a high level and would stabilize the Eagles O line for years to come. When Jamaal Jackson gets healthy, heres your line: LT-Jason Peters, LG-Markice Pouncey, C-J. Jackson, RG- Nick Cole, RT- Todd Herramans.

Pick Andy Reid for the DE slot. He should pick up the system faster than anyone he could draft.

Center Pouncey will be likely be available for the Birds; Graham, Mays, and Thomas are likely to be long gone. Using 1st round pick for Pouncey and using 2nd round for a quality DE seems possible.

Relax, he's getting a workout. By the way, Trent Cole weighed 240 at the combine and is dominant. Abiamiri was 270 and hasn't done much. Love how you rationalize things in your own crazy minds.

I agree with everyone! I haven't seen the workout or any film on this guy but I know he's the next Mike Mamula or Trevor Laws. And Clemson? When has a good Eagles defensive player ever come from Clemson? Duh.

They need a bigger DE, Dunlap has he size, 6'6" and 280 lbs, just not sure about his head. But you get a guy like that opposite Cole, and hopefully Cole's work ethic and determination rubs off on him, and that drastically helps the pass rush. Bring in Howard, Parker and Clemons on 3rd down, or some combo of, for fresh legs. Hopefully the Birds can have a draft like the year they picked up Lito, Brown, Lewis and Westbrook, while only one is left, they go down as a big time contributors as one draft class.

For my tastes, I want us to concentrate on defense with our first 2 picks. It seems to me that DE and linebacker will be taken with 1st 2 choices. We need a big tall DE who can rush the passer. My hopes are that Dunlap falls to them or possibly Everson Griffen. I would also like Graham although he is a bit short for my liking. At linebacker in the 2nd round.. maybe we can get lucky and pick up Novarro Bowman or Brandon Spikes.

Andy will try to "fool" everyone by taking some O-linemen that dropped in the first round, maybe one who had knee surgery or something. He loves that. getting "value". they dont go after positions of need, they have admitted they go for best talent on the board so if someone drops for any reason, they will take them. the one thing I know is they never take what everyone thinks they will take, so they will probably take like a CB or something with the first pick, trade sheldon so they dont have to pay him, and use 2nd and 3rd rd picks on the pressing D positions...something that keeps them good, but wont win a SB.

too small for a DE, probably can't play SAM position - eagles will never sign him - just making news

Echoing cletisvandam, Pouncey, Graham, and Thomas could be good picks. Not sure Iaputi is good enough at tackle to warrant the high pick. I'd take Pouncey, and it's not unthinkable that Andy Reid would take him. If they can trade McNabb or Kolb, that leaves open the possiblity of getting Thomas or Graham.

The Eagles need to take the BEST defensive player on the board regardless of position... they need to add faster, bigger and more talented players on defense....PLAYMAKERS!!!

Disagree with all the "expert" analysis... Teams don't pick up two veteran quarterbacks in one week with the hope they'll still swing a deal for a starter. They hope they've got a quarterback competition and will find a starter until a new draft pick works out. Browns NOT shopping for McNabb.
