Sikahema pulling for Cards

POSTED: Thursday, January 15, 2009, 2:37 PM
Update: Sikahema explained later that his words were taken out of context and he's not rooting for the Cardinals.

Update 2: Click here to listen to Sikahema explain himself during an ESPN 950 interview with  Mike Missanelli.

Original post:

NBC 10 sports director and anchor Vai Sikahema spent time with both the Eagles and the Cardinals during his eight-year NFL career, so which team will he be pulling for come Sunday?

"I have loyalties to both organizations, but people who know me know that I openly root for the Cardinals," he told Bob Young of The Arizona Republic. "It's been easier since they left the (NFC East) division. But they're the team that took a chance on me 27 years ago."

Sikahema started his career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1986. He spent the final two years of his career with the Eagles.

While he's rooting for Arizona, Sikahema said in the article that he expects the Eagles to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

"Both teams are playing with house money at this point, and it's not that I won't root for the Cardinals," he said, "but I'm looking at it like the guys in Vegas are - the Eagles are a better team, and they have a lot of guys who have been through this before. They're battle tested. I think that's going to be the difference in the game."

By the way, Jordin Sparks will sing the National Anthem before Sunday's game.

Vai should go annoy viewers in Phoenix if that's where his loyalties lie. Don't let the door hit you on the way out!!

i think you people are taking this a little too personal. He has a good reason to support the Cardinals and it's not like he's talking trash. hell, he predicts an Eagles victory. Lighten up a bit. GO EAGLES!

Oh all the sudden he's a journalist (reporter) and not just a jock who got a job because he played for the Eagles? The city took him in and this is how he thanks us?

The most interesting thing here is the shoddy reporting from Sheil Kapadia, not Vai's allegiances. If anyone bothered to do any legwork, Vai did an interview with a Phoenix news crew where he was wearing his old Cardinals jersey, only to take it off to reveal an Asante Samuel jersey underneath as his true colors.

It's like a sportscaster saying he really likes the local sports teams, but he's really a die hard Cowboys fan or Giants fan. That just won't fly in this city. Not a smart move, Vai. Yes, it may be a little childish, but that's just the facts of how it goes down in this city. If you are not for us, you're against us! Your Cardinals are going down.
