Buehrle hoped for a Vick injury

POSTED: Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 10:35 PM

Not everyone is going to forgive Michael Vick.

I'm sure the Eagles' quarterback is well aware of that.

But he'd probably be surprised to hear what fellow professional athlete Mark Buehrle had to say about him during a recent interview.

Buehrle, a veteran pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, was interviewed by Scott Merkin of MLB.com, discussing he and his wife's love for dogs and their roles as animal-rights advocates.

In the original version of the story (per Yahoo Sports' David Brown), Buehrle offered this take on Vick.

"Even if you are not a dog lover, how can you sit there and make two dogs fight and one is going to die?" said Buehrle. "How could you do that if you are somewhat sane?

"[Vick] had a great year and a great comeback, but there were times where we watched the game and I know it's bad to say, but there were times where we hope he gets hurt. Everything you've done to these dogs, something bad needs to happen to these guys."

While those quotes no longer appear in the story, they are still available on Merkin's Twitter account.

Earlier Tuesday, I posted on the Eagles' spending and checked out some mock drafts.

Ok, I know this is Philly.com, and well thought out comments that involve comprehension are kind of rare. Buehrle said he just wished that Vick would get injured. Vick ran an illegal dog-fighting ring, which involved him killing and torturing dogs. There is a big difference between saying something and actually doing it.

Lassie and Atomic Dog forgave Vick, so let's move on!

mark buerhle shut the hell up, hes not entitled to anything, he goes to say "how can someone sane blah blah blah" shut your mouth and mind your business. your the insane one projecting feelings onto dogs and you claim vick is the nutjob?

i respect animals and would never hurt them, but i dont place higher value on animals than people. the people who place higher value on animals than people are insane, in my opinion. someone who wishes to see a person hurt just because they hurt animals sounds sicker to me than a person who hurts animals.

z pie, I do get your point and to some degree can go along w/it but I also feel that wishing someone get injured (like I did w/Aaron Rogers in the playoff game) may be small minded, but it is not a crime. Murdering/torturing animals is and causes very vitriolic responses in humans especially those that have a bond w/animals.

i appreciate buehrle's accomplishments and his work in helping animals. but i feel like he is trying to exploit the situation and garner attention. there's no need to tell the reporter he wished injury to another athlete. this might be true but to say it publicly tells me he wants people to 1, talk about him and 2, compare the two and conclude that buehrle is the good guy bec he's been helping animals the entire time.

Joyner are you in therapy? Consider it. I just bought a white sox jersey on line. God bless Mark Buerle. And Mcnabb- if Mark is not entitled to say anything why do we have to read your babbling nonsense?

Actually if Vick was a factory worker, his trial wouldn't have been covered on ESPN 24/7 and we wouldn't have eveb known who Mike Vick is.

Funny how people are always talking about the Vick from 2005 ( who did the dogfighting) and not the Vick from 2011 ( who went to jail, lost money, and is trying to deter kids from going down the same path)

After reading this, Mark Buehrle is now one of my favorite baseball players!

Be careful what you wish on someone else, it could happen to you. Did Buehrle consider that someone could have the same feelings about him, wishing him a career ending injury? To wish an injury on a fellow athlete is ill spirited.

Mark has a right to his opinion, half of the eagles fan base were thinking for the same thing,,while the other half want to give mcVick the keys to the city,,the BIRDS have to stick to there original plan or will pay for it for years to come, the Packers proved what happens when you implement a plan and stick with it...w.

A Vick injury should not be hoped for. But, football field performance does not earn forgiveness...and please, I do not want to hear that he paid his debt for his torture of innocent animals for his own entertainment...his jail sentence was for racketeering not for animal cruelty. And I do not want to hear about his school visits either...he does that because he must to get his big contract. Honor is given to this man based on his football field performance and his race...that is what is sick.
