McNabb's expectations for Maclin
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
Eagles first-round pick Jeremy Maclin appeared on SportsCenter this morning along with four other NFL rookies.
He was asked what Donovan McNabb has told him in terms of expectations:
"He basically sat down and told me that they're not gonna waste a first-round draft pick for a guy to come in and sit on the bench so obviously he wants me to get out there and contribute right away," Maclin said. "He says get in that playbook and just make plays when the ball comes my way and everything else will take care of itself."
In the next couple of weeks, I'll be taking a look at what reasonable expectations for Maclin should be. We'll study how first-round WR picks have fared over the past 10 years and try to come up with some projected numbers for Maclin, but feel free to make those predictions now if you like.
Some other random thoughts on this Friday morning:
** Andy Reid indicated in a WIP interview earlier this week that the Cardinals didn't really want to deal Anquan Boldin. One of the reasons Reid said the Eagles inquired about the wide receiver but decided against making a move was the price of a new contract. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said on his Twitter (via PFT) that Boldin is not seeking $10 million a year and they've approached the Cardinals with a proposal less than that.
** One interesting storyline to keep an eye on this season will be the production of Maclin vs. Giants first-round pick Hakeem Nicks. ESPN.com's Matt Mosley writes that Nicks' school, North Carolina, ran a similar offense to the Giants. And New York may be looking for an immediate contribution from Nicks. Mosley writes that the G-Men are hoping he can make his way into the starting lineup during training camp.
** And finally, a couple non-football related items. First, I hosted our Phillies-Dodgers chat yesterday and was surprised by the harsh Jimmy Rollins criticism. I understand he's off to a bad start, but did some of us just start watching baseball last season? Do they still play 162 games? Do we remember the days of Juan Bell, Kim Batiste and Steve Jeltz? The guy has won an MVP, Gold Glove and World Series title. He will come out of it and finish the season hitting around .270. Let's all just take a deep breath and relax. (Insert your "Just stick to football" comments now).
** Tremendous job Michael Scott and company. It's tough for great shows to come up with season finales that meet expectations, but that might have been the funniest episode of the year. Please tell me Dwight's best friend Rolf will be a regular character next season. I'll never ask for anything again. I swear.
McNabb's job is the throw accurate passes to all recievers. Maclin's job is to catch balls that are indeed catchable and make a play afterwards. HK Kid 1500

D. McNabb's completion % for the last 5 years are: 64.0; 59.1; 57.0; 61.5; 60.4. So where are all of the bad passes? Maybe if he had an All-Pro WR his numbers would be better. When he had TO his numbers were through the roof. I've seen P.Manning throw balls in the dirt and high yet everybody views him as the gold standard even though he has been horrible in the postseason. The only reason they won a SB was because the defense was lights out in the postseason. Think about that for a minute. Our "world renown" defense choked in every championship game. 2001 29 points no sacks, 2002 20 points no sacks, 2003 14 points no sacks, 2004 24 points 2 sacks 0 INT's, 2008 2 sacks 0 INT's gave up 400 yards. So maybe if the defense held up it's part of the deal when it counts the Eagles would have won a championship. To all of the people out there who question McNabb and love the Trotter's, H.Douglas', and Dawkins' ask yourself where were they when it counted. What game changing plays did they contribute too in any championship game? Nothing but the truth
I agree with EaglesWest, it is J-Roll's attitude that is making this much bigger than it needs to be, if he were saying the right things and acting the right way it wouldn't be blown out of proportion like it is right now. J-Roll should remember this: "It's okay to think it, quite another to say it." MICKDONAHUE

hey tripschaos im sorry to tell ya man but you can't really compare the two of them. Two completly diffrent schemes for offense,NewYork is a run first pass second team. no real reads or timing patterns just the point that their scheme is almost what nicks ran in college says enought. Maclin will have to absorb alot more information on top of learning where to be at the right moment. Nicks biggest challenge will be to learn how to beat press coverage. You really can not compare them unless they were on the same team. the west coast scheme is much more complex than run, run, run, then playaction lol. There is no learning curve for that. Plus nicks does not have players like jackson and curtis around him and who knows maybe brown finally has a good year Maclin will not start this year. You stated to compare him to other teams 2nd and 3rd wrs but you cannot compare vets to rookies in a new O. sorry man it doesnt work like that how players produce comes down to the schemes they are in and there is to much talent in philly right now for a rookie to come out an light it up. But i say its a stand out year for maclin if he can grab 30+ passes but i doubt it. and Nicks has no one to take the pressure off of him so in the end you really can't try and compare them. It would be like trying to compare an apple to an orange lol. But it is a good try to see who is better De Rosaphillyfan45- McNabb threw up more than once. He may have been exhausted in the superbowl but he was not in Tampa. We will never win a superbowl with McNabb period. You could put Largent, Rice and Winslow at his side and he would still choke. ---Nothing but the truth--- You should take that Football 101 class they have. It's the quarterbacks job to get the ball to the receivers in a manner that gives the receiver the best opportunity to make a play after the catch. One would think that #5 would be much more accurate at this point in his career. majorgas
eeglenutt. your opinion is fine, but whats the point in blasting the blogger? DeRosa, so I guess we can never compare any receiver to any other team ever unless they have the exact same offense behind them with the same type of players? I was only making two points that A. Eeglenutt was blasting Sheil for no reason and was making an obvious point and B. you can always compare players at the same position. tripschaos
Hakeem Nicks replacing Plaxico? Uh no. Manningham, Sinorice Moss and Steve Smith also are in the lineup. Nicks will be asked to compliment that group. Maclin is a number one pick that the Eagles used rather than dealing for Anquan Boldin. To say that he has the luxury of easing into the lineup is dumb. This kid needs to be a player on day one. Every route, catch, drop, and TD will be micro-scoped. NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH - (Eskin anyone)... threw up because he was tired.... Phelps won 8 gold metals never saw him throw up. Brady won 3 superbowls never saw him throw up. Your logic is akin to Andy Reid is a gigantic fat guy because the supermarket has too much food on the shelf. TimeforChange
Expectation...work out with the Phillies behind the plate....that way he can dive at the dirtballs that hasbeen McStink will be throwing.... SkipinWV
I don't see anything wrong with a baseball comment.Especially when it's in defense of one the best shortstops the Phillies have ever seen.J-roll for what ever reasons, has always been an easy target for doubters. It would be simple to suggest that its just a matter of the color of his skin being that this is Philadelphia sports we're talking about but I would rather believe it's due to how dependent this team is on him being sucsessful.I think as you do,that he will straighten things out and have another productive season before it's all done. homer2811
