Bidding farewell, and thanks

When I first started back in 2008, in my introductory post, I tried to lay out exactly what this blog would be about. But the truth is, I really had no clue. And that was part of the fun.

Bidding farewell, and thanks

POSTED: Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 10:23 AM

My phone rang at about 7 p.m. on a Friday evening in late February 2009.

On the line was a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle, David White. Hours earlier, he reported that Brian Dawkins and the Denver Broncos had agreed to terms on a new contract.

It seemed strange for a San Francisco reporter to be breaking news that mostly involved the Broncos and Eagles, but White, who couldn’t have been nicer, explained to me that he had a rock-solid source. He said he had been receiving angry e-mails from Eagles fans, who were in disbelief that the franchise was letting one of its all-time greats get away.

There have been plenty of memorable moments during the last four years, but that night when I left my then-girlfriend (now-wife) waiting in a Center City restaurant for over an hour while I tracked down the Dawkins reports really stands out.

When I first started back in 2008, in my introductory post, I tried to lay out exactly what this blog would be about. But the truth is, I really had no clue. And that was part of the fun.

I guess that’s a long way of getting to the point here: This will be my final post on MTC.

The Eagles have been a lot of things over the last four years, but boring is not one of them.

There was the final Sunday of the regular season back in 2008 when the Bucs, a 12.5-point favorite, somehow fell to the Raiders to keep the Eagles’ playoff hopes alive.

Easter Sunday, when the Birds dealt Donovan McNabb within their division to the Redskins and moved on to the Kevin Kolb era.

Andy Reid surprising everyone by first signing Michael Vick and then handing him the starting job over Kolb a year later.

And of course, last summer’s spending spree.

There are countless others that have made this job such a blast.

Bill Walsh is known to have said that no football coach should stay in the same place for more than 10 years.

I don’t know what the proper expiration date is for a blogger, but it’s been a great run. I want to thank everyone who has read, commented, e-mailed, Tweeted, etc. You let me know when I was off-base and when I had stumbled upon something worthwhile.

I also have to thank my great colleagues at Philly.com. I was an avid reader of the site before I started working here, and that will continue now that I’m moving on.

So, keep in touch, get ready for training camp, and remember: Never call a run-pass option down by the goal line.

Damn, Sheil. I came on here to try and start up a 'Eagles should try and sign Mike Williams as their big receiver' rant...and I find this :(

Oh well. We'll on miss ya on philly.com, buddy.

...a great moment I'll always remember on your Eagles game day chats was the Eagles/Giants game at the Meadowlands in '11. I was watching the game on my computer while chatting on it at the same time...and just seconds before the giants were about to punt the ball to DJax one last time in that game, my &*@^*% computer crashed and I missed DJax's walk-off punt return...minutes later, I got it restarted, went straight back to the chat room, quickly read the comments of you and your followers, and damn near 'you-know-what' myself. Whatta ending!!!

@RS - You live! I haven't seen a post from my favorite "monkey holding two footballs" in a long time. I am sure you are aware he is moving his blog to PhillyMag. I hope he does the chat as well. We'll see.

Ha! "monkey holding two footballs"! Don't post as much as I used to..and haven't been on the chats in awhile. Was gonna try and make it a point to start chatting again with the Eagles games this year. Now I find this. Oh well...

How ya been? Still in No Cal?

Indeed, still in No Cal. All is well - especially since Sheil will still be blogging about the Eagles. I take it you are still DJing down in So Cal? I will be looking for your comments in Sheil's PhillyMag blog as well as your commentary in the game chats that we will force him to have.

Actually moved to Hawai'i (!!!) last year...and the DJ thing has been put on hold for awhile now. Getting more and more involved with social issue stuff. (my calling)

But hell yeah, I EXPECT Sheil to be hosting chats again this year, (right Sheil?) Only problem for me is the 6 hour time difference from the East Coast. Games here will start at 7 a.m.

Nice! Very happy for you! You know, when you get as old as me, 7:00 AM games mean you don't have to wait so long after your morning coffee to watch a game. Maybe I should retire in Hawai'i. Does any of your "social issue stuff" include making it easier on retirees? ;-)

Thanks...come to think of it, after the times zones "fall back" in Sept., there will only be a 5 hour time difference here, (Hawai'i doesn't do the daylight savings thing). The games will actually start at 8 a.m., so it's not that early.

And as far as helping retirees, I guess you could say in a way, yeah. I'm trying to educate people about what a true economic system is, and how we can implement it. And this economic system will provide for each and every person on Earth, in abundance. Sounds impossible, but it could very well happen if enough people just knew about it.

...and yeah, there are worse ideas than retiring in Hawai'i.

Sheil you are one of a few on this rag that had class and actually researched before you wrote. I wish you lots of success in your new adventures. I am glad you can use your talents in a better place. God bless.

good luck at the philly mag site, sheil. as long as you keep putting in the hard work (as evidenced by your very thorough posts) you will do fine.

on another note: why is philly.com losing all the best sports writers??? first stark/zolecki, then kate fagan, now sheil. if david murphy leaves i will seriously consider moving on from this site for good.
