Barkley thinking Eagles Super Bowl
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
Count Charles Barkley among the many who love what the Eagles did this offseason.
Sir Charles joined Howard Eskin and Marc Farzetta on WIP Monday and predicted a Super Bowl for the Birds in 2009.
"Good luck to my Eagles too," he said near the end of the interview. "I think the Eagles are gonna win the Super Bowl."
"And I'm glad Donovan got his contract cause y'all have not been treating him well here Howard," Barkley continued. "You know I've been on your ass all the time. McNabb's the greatest quarterback in Eagles history and y'all have not gave him the love he deserve here."
Speaking of which, let's get to some more Eagles links that we missed while I was on vacation...
** SI.com's Ross Tucker shared Barkley's view on McNabb in a column last week. He wrote more on the topic in a mailbag, where a reader took exception with Tucker's assertion that fans here are too hard on McNabb:
When Donovan McNabb wins three Super Bowls, I think he will get the same respect from the fans as Tom Brady would if he got hurt again. As what happens with most national media, you need to be here week in and week out to know that 80 percent of Eagles fans love the fact that Donovan McNabb is our quarterback. Focusing on the negative 20 percent is more convenient because it is a story you can write. Same as 'they boo, they threw snowballs at Santa, yada yada yada...' Come to Philly and do a poll of people walking the street and find out the facts before you write an article. Don't ask your family either; they must be nitwits not to like him too.
--Craig Hanlon, Wayne, Pa.
[Tucker's response] Judging from my e-mails, it seems like it is more like 50/50 in terms of the Eagles fans and their feelings towards McNabb. I am from near Philadelphia and have a pretty good sense of the arguments both for and against McNabb, I just think the people that want to run him and Andy Reid should be careful what they wish for. And the people in my family actually like McNabb for the most part; it is my friends who dislike his "phony" (their word, not mine) personality and think he comes up small in the biggest games.
However, another reader took the opposite view on McNabb:
The answer to your question is easy. I will take one championship every 12 years and no wins all the other years vs. losing the NFC championship each year. McNabb creates his own problems by being an arrogant, conceited jerk.
--Rod Speiss, Reading, Pa.
[Tucker] Yeah, that is what most people said, and I can imagine if you have never won one that would pretty much be the sentiment. But I'd like to talk with you at the end of those 12 years and see if you really felt that way. Ostensibly, that title would last forever but my guess is by midway through the next season it would be just a thing of the past.
And so the never-ending McNabb argument goes on.
** Tom Curran of NBCSports.com calls the Eagles' offensive additions one of the 10 best moves this offseason.
** This is an old one that I never got to. Scout, Inc's Matt Williamson said the Eagles' biggest weakness is at No. 1 receiver:
To be honest, I had a hard time coming up with something to choose for Philadelphia. Obviously, I am very high on this team and yes, the Eagles are my current pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Of the 32 articles I did about each team's biggest weakness, this one was the last I wrote. I just couldn't really come up with much. That doesn't mean the Eagles are far and away the top team in the league right now, but they are the team with fewest holes.

I do understand its a free country. The point I am trying to make to you is simply this. A WARRIOR FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIFE AND SOMEONE PLAYING A GAME IS NOT THE SAME. I THINK MCNABB HIMSELF WOULD SAY THAT. TO ME THATS DIFFERENT BUT HEY I AM DIFFERENT. ALL I WAS TRYING TO SAY IT HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY TO EXPLAIN YOUR POINT. BUT I WAS WRONG AND FOR THAT I AM VERY SORRY. dwaynem

Look, I'm not a McNabb lover or hater, he is a good QB, I think most feel that way. He is NOT a great QB, if he were a great one he wouldn't bury screen passes 5 yards short in the turf or overthrow sideline attempts! As I said, he's good, he needs to cut way down on his misses to be great. Yes, I'll chear just as loud or louder as all of you if he brings the Birds a title, he just hasn't done it yet. I also think that this years group will be the most talented team that he has had surrounding him, let's hope that it transfers over to the playing field. Just remember a lot of these players are new and will more than likely need a few games to get used to the systems that the Iggles play. I can see them getting 10 wins without a big problem, but of course I'd be happier with 12. Yes, I'm very optimistic, so shoot me!!! FireChief
dwaynem a servive member is not soem mythical beast they are just people. An athlete is not some magical creature they are just people like everyone else. If you can not respect a person who gives their all in a moments time then what can you respect? Money aside and fame aside the man gave everything and left it out there on the field I can respect that and a lot of my comrades can respect that. I do not know what kind of unit you where in dwaynem but in my unit we go balls out and have a high level of respect for those who do as well(even the enemy). I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
Charles Barkley is a walking mound of lard with a lot of hot air. Regardless, GO EAGLES!!! SayHello2MyLittleFriend
Here's a prediction for the Eagles this year (barring any catosprophic injuries) 13-3. One of the losses will probably be against the redskins (they always play the eagles tough) and the other two will come from out of the conference. Everything seems to be in place for the Eagles to do it. they have a backup in McCoy, wideouts have been addresses (maclin, ingram) they tightened up the O-Line, and minimal losses on the defensive side. komplex2005
remarks by --Rod Speiss, Reading, Pa. I'm originally from Reading. I know how "open-minded" people from Reading are LOL!!! The Phillies seem to get into the WS about once every 10-15 years. I'd like them to be in it more frequently than 1-15 or 1-12. Winning the WS would be a lot more fun done more often. I'm here in Yankee land and have to hear about those 26 championships about every 26 minutes. As an Eagle fan, being in contention every year and winning here and there is far better than being the 81-90's Eagles fans (I'd take McNabb succession of Detmers, Pederson's McMahon's any day) As a person living in Giant's country, if they had the same success as the Yankees over the years, I'd have to have shot myself by now. Charles makes news...big or small....it is written aabout....but bottom line who cares....he left us and goes into the hall not as a 76er....bad idea....he is no longer Philly......he may be charming but he left us.......not the other way around... nuggett
remember back in the day when he beat the redskins by himself and accounted for 90% of the offense including 125 yards rushing. Don't forget he was a one man wrecking crew, injuries and age have made him a pocket passer but i think he is still has a highlight reel playoff game left in him. If he can't do it, it can't be done. jwood- Like I've said before, last year's NFC Championship cannot be used as a reason to knock McNabb. I'm still waiting for an article that reminds everyone that the defense simply couldn't make a stop in the last 6 or 7 minutes (maybe more?). That's why I don't get wrapped up in anyone who wants to pin that loss on him. I bet Jim Kelly thanks the man above every day that online commenting wasn't so popular during his playing days...
In answer to "I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it" comments about all of us not ever playing on a high level... We follow sports because we don't HAVE TO play at that high level--- we have these highly paid guys to get their brains bashed in FOR US. Nothing wrong with working at Dunkin unless you're a cop, and workin' and getting the donuts on the job. Pass the donuts! In effect, we paid for these salaries, that nickle is on us (it's more like a silver dollar these days.) RichieAllen64
I'll keep saying this 'til training camp starts: This is as good a roster as the Iggles have ever had....but right now it's just a collection of players, not yet a team. Let's see what we got here when the whistle for the first regular season game trills. TBear
I am still waiting for the Mcnabb fans to tell me what is the bar for an eagle QB. Is it NFC championship game or bust. Lol... I do have to agree with one thing. The history for eagles QB's is not great. Lol... I mean when you come in as a QB for the 49ers,Dallas,Steelers,Colts,Packers,Redskins,ect... you are getting compared to QB's that have championships. But no QB and I do mean no QB has as many NFC championship games in eagle history than Mcnabb. So I will say he is the G.O.A.T.(GREATEST OF ALL TMIES)in eagle history. For the Mcnabb fans if that is good enough for you its good enough for me. Looooooooooooosers. Lol...... dwaynem
RichieAllen64 to use the "we pay for these salaries" is a lame excuse. What profession out there doesn't have people pay for their salaries? Name 1? What ever you do somebody has to buy it so in essence that customer pays your salary. You follow you nitwit. You also unknowingly emphasized my point that most people have never played sports at a high level after high school. So thanks. Also I never said that working at Dunkin Donuts was a bad thing what I said is that lonewolf works at there and is always complaining so I offered him an alternative. Everyday all lonewolf does is yap yap yap on this blog and yap yap yap every morning while ringing up my coffee and donuts. So I offered him a chance to man up and I offer the rest of you to man up as well. REAL MEN SERVE AND DON'T COMPLAIN! I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
