E-mail from friend and loyal blog reader Lemur this morning:

You should have included the part of the Banner interview where he compares Madden to Reid…it was ridiculous…he said Madden coached the Raiders for 10 years, like Reid, and went to 5 AFC championship games, like Reid, and won a Super Bowl…and he is considered a Hall of Fame coach yet Andy is criticized in this town.

Um, well Joe, the Super Bowl is huge!!...if Andy had won a Super Bowl he would not be criticized….this is why people get so mad at Banner.

Lemur is right (it happens every three months or so) that I should have included the Reid/Madden comparison from the Joe Banner interview on Comcast SportsNet. So here is exactly what Banner said:

"I was telling the story to somebody the other day. John Madden coached at Oakland for 10 years," Banner said. "He won fewer regular-season games and he went to five championship games. He did go to two Super Bowls versus one, and he did win one. But in Oakland that got him elected to the Hall of Fame. In Philadelphia, that gets Andy, at least from the public's perspective, uncertain about his job."

To be honest, given my age, I can't comment properly on how Madden compares to Reid. I never saw the guy coach. So instead, here are the numbers from pro-footballreference.com, and I'll let you all argue about the comparison.

Regular-season record: Madden went 103-32-7 for a winning percentage of .763. Reid is 97-62-1 for a winning percentage of .610.

Playoff record: Madden went 9-7 for a .563 winning percentage. Reid is 10-7, a winning percentage of .588.

Conference championships: Madden got there seven times and was 1-6. Reid has got there five times and is 1-4.

Super Bowls: Madden was 1-0. Reid is 0-1.

Madden and Reid should not even be in the same sentance. Madden was a better coach, a better football mind and better evaluating talent.

Those are interesting numbers, except for the fact that Madden was head coach during a decade dominated by the Steelers and Dolphins in the AFC. Reid had no such competition in the NFC when the Eagles reigned over the conference from 2001-2004, and still made just one Super Bowl appearance after three straight conference championship losses. (Madden's regular-season winning percentage is even more impressive in my opinion when you consider that the majority of those regular seasons consisted of just 14 games, not 16.) While we're discussing statistics, we could also argue that McNabb is a better quarterback than Kurt Warner because McNabb has thrown for more yards and more touchdowns, not to mention having won 25 more regular-season games. So, as FireAndyReid points out, only one statistic really matters in the end. You can ask Dan Marino, Bud Grant and Marv Levy about that.

Actually, I like Banner's logic. To extend this, since they are so similar, one additional connection is needed. John Madden left coaching after his 10-year stint. Andy Reid should do the same...

If Maddon went to 2 Super Bowls then why is his record 1-0? Is the writer wrong or is pro-footballrefences?

People, Andy is here 'til Andy no longer wishes to be here. Or until Mr. Lurie decides to change the whole Iggles structure. Not going to happen. And as aggravating as the guy can be, and as infuriating, maddening and any other '-ing' you can name...he will be the same guy he has always been. He will be good, trying mightily to be great, but probably not getting there. We have had three LEGITIMATE shots of getting to the Supe, other than the one we did, and OMG they ALL hurt in each their own special way. But all of those teams had certain flaws. Those flaws would have been an automatic 'loser' sentance IN their particular super-bowls. Can you imagine the rhetoric flowing down the columns if THAT particular scenerio had played out? Oh Brother!

Joe Madden had earflaps and took a guy out of the outfield to stop the Phillies from scoring but it just didn't work since we have the power or the "Chooch". Comparing Joe Madden with Snack-Daddy (Andy Reid) is engaging in imbecilities without a Monty Python license.

I wish Madden would go back to coaching so i wouldn't have to hear his nonsense on TV anymore.

Prep5454, Madden only coached in one Super Bowl. So that would make Banner incorrect. -- Sheil

Would Madden have: 1. Waived Jeremiah Trotter prior to a season with Super Bowl expectations? 2. Begin any season with Todd Pinkston and James Thrash as his starting wide receivers? 3. Trade out of the first round and select a developmental project with his first pick in the draft for a team with super bowl hopes? Twice? 4. Abandon the run in the playoffs?
