Banner: Eagles to take patient offseason approach
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
As the number of teams still playing in the NFL playoffs continues to dwindle down, much of the league-wide focus has started to shift to the uncertain offseason and what it means for players, fans and ownership.
Last Sunday (presumably before the Eagles' playoff loss to the Packers), Fox 29 aired an interview with team president Joe Banner.
Banner talked about what the Eagles' offseason approach will be.
"Our view is really no different than what you see going around the league," Banner said. "With the unknown of the collective barganining agreement, we've decided - and everybody can make their own decision - that it's safer to wait, be patient, let's see what the landscape is and move forward.
"So we don't rule out doing things, and at the same time at this point, we haven't done anything, and it's overwhelmingly related to just kind of the uncertainty of where things are headed."
Two of the Eagles' main offseason decisions pertain to Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson. The Eagles' likely options with Vick will be to offer him a long-term extension, franchise him, let him walk or sign him and trade him. One of the first two options seems most likely.
As for Jackson, the Eagles need to decide whether they want to rework his current deal.
However, Banner said putting plans into action right now doesn't make sense.
"You don't know if there's going to be a season. You don't know what the size of the cap will be or if there's going to be a cap when you come back. You don't know if you do things like we've traditionally done with signing bonuses, how will they be treated, how much of it will be charged to each season," Banner said. "So there's a number of questions out there that would make it very difficult in terms of your long-term planning... whether there was going to be a season or not right now, under the current rules to figure out how you best want to approach a contract.
"So we've made the decision that let's be patient and get a better feel for what's going to be the structure of things going forward before we jump in."
And finally, Banner talked about the Eagles' overall quarterback situation. Kevin Kolb is under contract for another season at $1.4M. Would the Eagles consider dealing him?
"There's a saying in football: If you think you have two quarterbacks, it probably means you have none," Banner said. "And I've always thought that was true. I think we're the first team that thinks it has two and truly has two. At the end of the season, we'll sit back on all the decisions we have to make - contracts, specific players and positions... to try to figure out the best we can how to make this team as strong as it can be going forward and hopefully get it right."

Salary Cap Bowl Champs again! That's what you get when you an accountant for team prez and a salary cap lawyer for GM. nice work. snakeplissken- Look at that picture. Pig and a rat
Joe you should have refunded my ticket money after the game on Sunday. Fraud is a crime in Pennsylvania. 12 years of hearing I have to do a better job baha baha baha Andy Reid is a poor game day coach. It's time to move on. Fast Eddie
So many pathetic Eagles "fans" on here. Everyone is complaining when Reid rebuilt this team from practically nothing and had them win the NFC East, not to mention the Eagles are less than a handful of players away from being at least solid at every single position (1 LB, 1 CB, 2 OL), and a new D coordinator wouldn't hurt. I agree with everything Banner said. When it comes time for action, then I don't know how much I'll agree with him. But at this time they have to wait and see what happens with negotiations. Keeping two good QBs is the right approach, though if it were me I would trade Mike Vick, because his value has probably peaked and I don't see him still playing in 2013. armchairGM- Translation...We'll wait to see who doesn't get picked up by other teams and get them on the cheap. You see folks we only look to be competive enough to fill the seats not win a championship.
Reid has a great record...against losing teams. Teams with winning records own the Eagles. Why is when the Birds play teams with terrible running defense, he throws the ball more? Green Bay could have made the tackles and ends run well outside and Reid would still not send McCoy into a 20-foot hole. Two years ago they played Cincy and Cleveland, two teams in the bottom three of run defense and he had McNabb throw 60-70 times. Reid's a terrible game day coach. Once he gets past his first 15 scripted plays, he's lost. The Packers were supposed to have no running game, yet the Birds let a rookie run for over 150 yards. Why no adjustments? When will some writer ask Reid exactly when is he going to do a better job? The front office and Reid's philosophy is make the playoffs and hope the other teams come down with food poisoning. mike l
I just wish Reid could manage the clock as well as Banner manages the cap. txflyer
It's been a week and I'm still hacked at the Eagles loss. How do you give the starters off a week and let Vick get clobbered on the first play. The worst case scenario was the Packers jumping out to a lead, taking the crowd out and that's just what they did. Afterwards some of the Eagles said that Green Bay running the ball surprised them, why don't we surprise other teams....why are we so predictable.
When it's painfully obvious that we need to run the ball, and we have a good back, why do we abandon it so quickly. Why can't Reid see that? Why couldn't Reid help Vick by committing to a running game and making it a little easier for his QB. Would like to see Andy get hit 6 or 7 times.
I talk to a lot of people around the league and most think Reid is the easiest coach to beat, especially on his home field.
I know Akers missed a few kicks which is very unlikely but it should have never came down to the last drive. You know Green Bay has a good defense, certainly better than ours, why not use your brain and keep Rodgers off the field early and let our offense get some rhythm going. Reid is a game day liability. Gruden, Bellick, Dungy, Tomlin, Coughlin, and Peyton have all won super bowls with far fewer chances at it than Andy Reid. We were outcoached yet again and Reid was outcoached in the NFC title games at home earlier in his career.
Where's Jeff Lurie? After 12 years, this is the best Andy Reid can do
with an offense that is explosive....just 16 points at home. It's a disgrace, embarrassing and Reid should be fired. I would have fired him after he punted in a playoff game in New Orleans a few years ago. There are plenty of good coaches who could have game planned better for the Pack and that was a winnable game, if we weren't
Andy-capped! Fan74
To all the people who pay their hard earned money on seats and luxury boxes: Perhaps you should take Banner's approach "be patient and get a better feel for what's going to be the structure of things going forward before we jump in." Sounds like a good approach before buying expensive tickets to the Linc, doesn't it? Like the Braman/Gamble ownership before them, this ownership promises a lot more than it delivers. Considering that they, with other NFL owners, protected themselves financially for next season, I think fans of this team should consider doing the same.

Yea, like we don't know this BS that comes out of Joe Banner's mouth isn't meaningless double-speak. His condescending BS is unbearable. Sign Michael Vick, Desean Jackson, and Shady McCoy to long term deals, and this team has a solid foundation. This nickel and dime stuff has gone too far. The Eagles are in the bottom third of the NFL in terms of salary spending this year, they can go out and get a linebacker WHO'S ACTUALLY GOOD or a safety THAT CAN COVER. brmorgen81
To Mr. Banner - give me a break. Forget about the double speak patience approach. Fans are real, its time for the Eagles to do the same with Reid and his personnel strategy. The team is laoded with 7th rounders and undrafted, absolutely undersized on the d-line unequivicaolly weak at every position other than receiver and running back. Get real. This condition has happened over time, its not been 1 bad draft. Its been a bunch of bad decisions over many drafts. For example, Graham cost the EAGLES 1st round and two 3RD round PICKS; plus we spent a 4th round of Trapp - another DE. To me that is 4 picks without a solution; get real Graham is under sized lerze77
Eagles to take patient offseason approach. What Banner means is; don't expect to see any impact signings. They'll wait until the market is dried up and then jump in for the marginal CFL talent and or players fresh off of IR, for bargain prices. What better way to remain the Gold Standard! Zero SuperBowls and counting!!! younged- Who cares anymore about these bozo's. Lets go Phils!!!!!
- Memo from Joe Banner....If you continue to do the same things time after time and expect a different result..you are a moron..
- THE GOLD STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE.. 10-6 and 0 to 1 playoff wins for the rest of your lives.. albertpa
- They are figuring out how they will lead the league in having the most money under the salary cap because they are all geniuses in the Eagles organization shawnmac
Of late the Eagles have been doing a better job of evaluating talent. Unfortunately they have not been able to utilize that talent and they have had to let go some good players for various reasons. This season as I watched NFL games, I noticed many ex-Eagles doing very well on other teams. So can't really put one's finger on what exactly is wrong but it all points to what happens on the field on game-day. e.g. DeSean Jackson might continue to be less of a threat going forward unless there is a legitimate running threat to draw the safeties towards the line of scrimmage. The defense will continue to stink without sure tacklig. I was amazed to see a defense that was supposed to be built on speed not be able to reach the QB. cleansports- wow, that really was "the greatest eagles roster" ever assembled last year Joe. 0 wins against playoff teams. real good. either you suck at evualuating talent or your coach has HORRIBLE gameplans that RUINS a teams chance at winning. but which one is it...hmm. great improvements to the roster too, I dont know whose brilliant idea it was to get Marlin Jackson but I have to say it was an amazing feat of GM'ing. 0 wins against playoff teams...to almost 0 wins against playoff teams. 10-6 with no playoff wins..to 10-6 with no playoff wins. wow. cant wait til next season with the same exact leadership in place...PLEASE TAKE AWAY THE PLAYCALLING FROM REID AND END THE INSANITY.
sit around and wait Joe- this is a baseball town now. you blew your chance. your money and ticket sales still don't make you the #1 team in town. nice defense this year guys- it was an embarrasement to all eagles fans. drumminge6
Eagles management has been short sighted since they gave Reid control of personnel and draft. Eagles have not recognized there needs at tackle, cornerback, defensive tackle, line backers or have made lousy selections. Teams in the NFL have players starting in the 2nd year or they are released and Reid picks up the left overs. There are players on the current roster who have been released and resigned. Andy thinks they get better by AGE. tulsaphil

What does it say about the talent evaluating being done by all the other franchises who are behind the Eagles in the w/l column?
How do the Eagles keep winning?
They are one of the youngest teams in the league and a lot of their roster is comprised of draft picks.
They haven't recognized their needs at tackle? They had Tra Thomas and Runyan here for a decade. He let Thomas go and traded for a young Pro Bowl left tackle with Peters. Andrews was supposed to be the other tackle and last time I checked he had some ability. Andrews didn't work out, but to say Reid hasn't recognized the need for offensive lineman is laughable.
The bottom line is that you can't address every single position. It's impossible. When the Eagles draft lineman, the fans cry for skill players. When the Eagles draft skill players, why didn't they address the lines
The Eagles weren't supposed to win this year and they still won the division.
One thing is clear from reading many of the comments, you don't need a brain to be a fan.
TurbanCowboy - Runyon and Thomas were drafted by someone else. Also Reids philospohy is out dated. Small fast D-linemen wear down and can't stand up to the huge O-linemen in todays league. I will give Reid some credit on the offensive side of the balll for drafting, but the only reason he was in the playoffs this year was because of Vick. The reason we are no longer in the play offs is because of Reid!
