Asomugha, Sanders and Schmitt

POSTED: Friday, February 18, 2011, 3:11 PM

Just a few notes from around the league to get to today...

* The Colts have cut safety Bob Sanders. Sanders, a two-time Pro Bowler, has been plagued by injuries and has appeared in just nine games in the past three seasons. In case you're wondering, no, I don't think he would make sense for the Eagles (unless you want to make the joke about them always adding players who are injury risks).

The Eagles likely will have decisions to make at safety though, with Quintin Mikell no longer under contract and Nate Allen returning from a season-ending injury.

* The Inquirer's Jonathan Tamari wrote yesterday about how the Eagles are in position to add talent, and I took a look at some cap numbers last week. Which brings us to Nnamdi Asomugha. Michael Lombardi of NFL Network said that the Raiders' chances of bringing Asomugha back are slim to none now that they've decided to re-sign Richard Seymour. That's one less team the Eagles would have to potentially worry about. Now, about the other 31 teams that might want him...

* Eagles fullback Owen Schmitt told West Virginia Illustrated he's thought about other potential sources for income if the players are locked out.

"I could always do some student teaching on the side or whatnot," he said. "It won’t be anything out of the ordinary. My buddy Phil works for a landscaping company that I could easily get on.

"Those are just little things that I was like, 'Okay, if this doesn’t happen I don’t want to sit around for six months waiting. I’ll just do something on the side as long as I have some income coming in.'"

Schmitt also talked about playing last season with the Eagles. He's signed through 2011 before potentially becoming a free agent.

"It was awesome," says Schmitt. "There were a lot of young guys on the team. I feel like I really mesh with the team well and fit in. They used me and I was allowed to kind of just be me, really, and be the player I am and use my skills to the best that I could. I had a great year. It was fun."

* And finally, I'm a day late, but pour one out for Uncle Leo this weekend. In case you somehow missed it, the actor who played him, Len Lesser, passed away at the age of 88 on Wednesday. I consider it a societal fail that there is no good Uncle Leo montage on YouTube yet, but here's a clip at least.

by the way, great ode to Uncle Leo! have a neighbor exactly like that. ALWAYS try to avoid him...lest I get into a neverending conversation about politics, life, music, home improvements, his work van, his dog, his new workshop, etc. etc. etc.

...and the best part got cut short? Uncle Leo picks the discarded watch out of the trash, get's it fixed, and shows it off to Seinfeld's parents, (who coincidentally, gave the watch to Jerry as a gift).

Man yu're the angriest poster on this site. Kind of getting into the Lonelywolf category and we ain't heard from him since Kolb lost his job. Lighten up Mac, when it's all said and done, football is ultimately...just a game. Have a cup of chamomile and relax a bit.

A healthy Bob Sanders would provide the toughness the defense has been lacking since Dawkins was not resigned. However, the odds that Bob Sanders will ever be healthy are very slim. I say sign him, if it doesn't work out he can always hang out with Marlin Jackson

Sanders has not been injured enough for the eagles to even consider signing him! maybe if he has someone take a bat to both his knees, he might have a chance to make the team! otherwise, he's got no chance!

That's a shame for Sanders, the only time he was healthy, they won it all. Peyton can't do it by himself.

Joey Banner is rubbing his little rat claws together at the thought of signing an injured player on the cheap. You go Joe. Keep that Gold Standard going!!! Lets go Phils!!! Best run sports franchise in the city.

Why not sign Sanders to an incentive laden contract, the young safeties could use the leadership. Sanders said himself that his style of play would shorten his career. He hits hard but clean, he is always around the ball. Torn biceps are not career enders. Jackson getting hurt has nothing to do with Sanders. RIP uncle Leon.

Dawkins is under contract for 5 years, $17 million - at age 38. Ridiculous.

Schmitt did a great job learning the offense and fitting in. Yes, Weaver was missed, but the offense did not suffer as much as we thought it would.

Schmitt did a good job. Sanders is done. He had a brief, but great career. The Eagles need an impact safety and can only hope that Allen improves in his second year. I wasn't that impressed with Mikell and would not sign him for more than 2 years. The player they really need is Asomugha to pair with Samuels. The money is there for him and they've made big splashes like this before. Can't agree with the whinning. They were 2 missed Akers field goals from beating the Super Bowl winner. I feel the Eagles played GB better than Pittsburgh and the changes they've made with the coaches were phenomenal. Go Eagles!

I hope Weaver can come back and play effectively who really knows. Owen did a good job and should be back.I for one would be surprised and disappointed if we signed Sanders. Q needs to go and his position upgraded we need a healthy intimidater back there at SS.
