Asante Samuel makes overrated list

POSTED: Friday, May 28, 2010, 12:50 PM
Is Eagles CB Asante Samuel overrated? (Ron Cortes / Staff Photographer)

Some links and notes to pass along on this Friday:

* Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com has a list out with the most underrated and overrated player on every NFL roster.

For the Eagles, he calls Asante Samuel overrated:

He is a gambler who can make a big play, but give up some as well. And he doesn't tackle at all.

And he names Jason Avant as the underrated player:

He is a steady No. 3 receiver who knows how to make plays on third down. He has great hands, rarely dropping a pass.

* Brian Westbrook is still deciding on his future. He gave an update on the NFLPA's Web site. Plus he was asked if Donovan McNabb is a good fit with the Redskins:

I think he’s a good fit. I think he’s a proven quarterback who can get it done. He’s a great leader and he brings accountability to this football team that they might not have had before.

* I think the Eagles' biggest question mark is still at cornerback. What do we know now that we didn't know right after the draft? Macho Harris is in the mix. Not sure there's anything else. We know Ellis Hobbs wants to start. We know Joselio Hanson does also. But are any of these guys good enough?

* The Birds have full-squad practices next week and the following week. While we get more of an idea of where people fit in, there are still no pads and no hitting. That doesn't happen until Lehigh.

* Speaking of Lehigh, what do you want to see from our coverage there? Got some ideas of my own, but want to hear from you all. July 26 will be here in no time.

Who holds most of the Eagles all-time stats at QB? If McNabb is overrated, which Eagles QB would be rated above him?

I'd like to see some streaming video from Lehigh. Show some on field action. I'd also like Domo to interview Asante Samuel where he can explain his tackling philosophy.

What do I want to see covered at Leigh? How about football and leave in nonsense out. No more Dawkins, McNabb and Westbrook talk.

Lets just hope the eagles coaches didn't over rate Branden Graham after giving up all those picks to get the guy who probably would have been there had they stayed put. Still think the eagles blew the draft.

Is it just me or is TheKolbIntereceptionMachineShow actually D-McFlab? Or is it Momma McFlab. They have got to be the only two people that cant let that fat slob go already! And when you have to bring up a college bowl game from 12 years ago to prove he won a championship-type game, you REALLY dont have much of an arguement! Why haven't you gotten your subscription to the Washington Post?

Asante: over paid and that's all that counts. Camp coverage: I'd like to see more coverage of the unit drills. What are the drills the offensive line is doing for example and who's winning the one on ones. There's too much coverage of the 7 v 7's.

Again, the Eagles defense had a chance to put the game away with a stop against the Patriots and couldn't do it. Johnson got out coached as the Patriots made an adjustment at halftime and his Defense did not hold up.

I would say the only reason Samuel would be considered overrated is because he makes the pro bowl every year. Most people would expect only a complete player makes the Pro bowl. Lets face it, where someone "rates" is intangible. But just like sacks for DE's, INT's are what gets a DB into the Pro Bowl and neither is an indicator of how complete you are.

Asante is not overrated. He is a play maker. He gives up plays, but usually not a game changer. He makes game changing plays. McNabb is overrated. Reid's system will provide a QB to make great numbers. McNabb should have had BETTER numbers. Only if he realized that receivers dont catch with their feet.

AlexSp exactly my point. McNabb hasn't won anything in his entire career. He has only 2 minor Bowl games wins and 5 NFL Championship appearances. He's a loser just like Jim Kelly, Warran Moon, Frank Tarkenton and Dan Marino and not a winner like Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer and Mark Rypien. It's about championships; that's how success is measured. If you aren't #1 in whatever you do in life then you are a loser.

Asante is a top two, three player on the Eagles defense. Being overrated for him just means he is not one of the top two, three players in the league. If you are really, really good being overrated is not that bad. If I'm drafting a team, I'll take the overrated shut-down corner over the underrated no. 3 receiver everytime.

Shelton looked SLOW last year. Teams pumped faked him to death and he bit every time. We need speed at the corner. Let's hope somebody can step up. The improved pass rush will help alot too.

Asante is a gambler and now with another gambler beside him this team will take off. McNabb always put the defesne in a rut but now with Keivn "Mr. Clutch" Kolb this defense will not have to worry about to much. With McNabb we had to have corners who played close but with Kolb we can have corner who take chances just like Kolb will do this year. Kolb will fling that ball even into triple coverage and demand that his WR catches that ball. The defense will feed off of Kolb's intensity and even if Kolb throws 3 pick sixes they know that Kolb will get all of those points back on the next two drives.

lol, I am not wolf genius...dont know the guy, I happen to agree with him about McNabb, although I think he has gone overboard on the whole Kolb thing...you have obviously OD'ed on the McNabb kool-aid on the other hand...have fun watching McNabb vomit all over his new teammates and go 2-14 in clutch situations

#5 made some many spectacular plays and to some this justifies claiming status as an elite QB. #5 also missed many pedestrian passes and killed drives or even scores and to some this justifies claiming over rated status. maybe we should just argue about this ex-eagles QB for ever, or maybe not.

We all know "why" the Eagles hired Asante, but it's no excuse for not knowing (or wanting) how to tackle, yes he gets turnovers but not enough to outway his pathetic misses, up to me he'd be gone. Hey, more power to him for getting where he is without being able to tackle, he's just not the type of player I want on my football team, just sayin'...

WHY o' WHY can't you McNabb haters accept any sound opinion other than your overemotionalloserarsemindsets??? McDude was/is GOOD and probably a HOF when he hangs them up...and ASANTE is another example of the big ego (we do it better) FO....why would a perennial SB contender/Champs let AirTacklinAsante go??? Um...he is only ONE DIMENSIONAL; actually .5 dimensional...he can't tackle nor actually cover but he does jump routes extremely well.....

lol @ Kolbint.machinewhatver, I agree figgypop....McNabb was good 01-04...he has been overrated ever since. that team had one of the top D's under Jim Johnson so they really should have won at least 1 SB. McNabb just screwed stuff up half the time in big games. and yea samuel is overrated too. its not like hes solid every down plus gets some interceptions as a bonus. he whiffs on pics and tackles giving up 20 yard gains over and over, and then will occasionally get a pic. its not worth 58 million dollars. sheldon is better, and makes about 40 million dollars less.

LOOK AT THE PICTURE ABOVE! 'nuff said about asante's tackling (or lack-there-of)....who taught that guy how to tackle? and y do u think the patriots wanted no parts of that guy when his contract was up? my roommate in college is from boston and warned me of all of this and god damnit i hate to admit but he's right...OVERRATED!

Richly deserved, Asante. Overrated AND overpaid. The only thing Samuel is good at is getting interceptions. He is a liability in coverage, because he is unable to play press coverage, and is susceptible to double moves, and head fakes, since he likes to read the quarterbacks eyes and cheat to increase his chances of getting an interception. The interceptions, most of which are against the bottom half of QB's in the league, are at the expense of big plays given up. His inability to tackle are exposed on WR screens. Samuel is a below average CB who has inflated INT stats.

wow, Polamalu, is he crazy. That guy is all over the field making plays. Id have to read that reasoning, doesnt make sense. Avant is the man, way underrated. Maybe he gets more balls thrown his way with Kolb.

He also had Polamalu of Pittsburgh, who is a great player, as overrated, so I would not put much stock in this article, although I was happy to see him recognize Avant. He also had Ronde Barber as overrated. I would like to ask Donovan how he feels about that rating, and speaking of Donovan, would Prisco put him down as overrated? Probably not, he is a national writer, and therefore he would be placed at the top of the underrated the love affair with the national medis continues to grow.(see Rick Reilly this week).

People have to remember, they signed him after the Eagles couldn't get a turnover on defense to save their lives. They brought him in as a compliment to the rest of their secondary, and to produce turnovers, which he has. It's not his fault they decided to get rid of his supporting cast (Dawkins, Brown) and leave him on an island with the likes of Macho Harris, Demps, Lindley, Hobbs, etc. I think a lot of people who say he is overrated, have too high expectations for the guy.

I think Samuel is more overpaid than overrated although that distinction is a small one. He's doing what the Eagles paid for when they signed him, but now they want more. Jason Avant is definitely underrated. As for Camp coverage: I'd like to see more stories about the units and how they are working together as well as who is standing out.

Did the Andy Reid haters notice that Brian Dawkins was also deemed overrated? Who, by the way, overrates Asante Samuel? He seems perfectly rated by almost everyone.
