Asante Samuel makes overrated list
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
Some links and notes to pass along on this Friday:
* Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com has a list out with the most underrated and overrated player on every NFL roster.
For the Eagles, he calls Asante Samuel overrated:
He is a gambler who can make a big play, but give up some as well. And he doesn't tackle at all.
And he names Jason Avant as the underrated player:
He is a steady No. 3 receiver who knows how to make plays on third down. He has great hands, rarely dropping a pass.
* Brian Westbrook is still deciding on his future. He gave an update on the NFLPA's Web site. Plus he was asked if Donovan McNabb is a good fit with the Redskins:
I think he’s a good fit. I think he’s a proven quarterback who can get it done. He’s a great leader and he brings accountability to this football team that they might not have had before.
* I think the Eagles' biggest question mark is still at cornerback. What do we know now that we didn't know right after the draft? Macho Harris is in the mix. Not sure there's anything else. We know Ellis Hobbs wants to start. We know Joselio Hanson does also. But are any of these guys good enough?
* The Birds have full-squad practices next week and the following week. While we get more of an idea of where people fit in, there are still no pads and no hitting. That doesn't happen until Lehigh.
* Speaking of Lehigh, what do you want to see from our coverage there? Got some ideas of my own, but want to hear from you all. July 26 will be here in no time.

Did the Andy Reid haters notice that Brian Dawkins was also deemed overrated? Who, by the way, overrates Asante Samuel? He seems perfectly rated by almost everyone. Sgerat
I think Samuel is more overpaid than overrated although that distinction is a small one. He's doing what the Eagles paid for when they signed him, but now they want more. Jason Avant is definitely underrated. As for Camp coverage: I'd like to see more stories about the units and how they are working together as well as who is standing out. Rick Wise Guy
People have to remember, they signed him after the Eagles couldn't get a turnover on defense to save their lives. They brought him in as a compliment to the rest of their secondary, and to produce turnovers, which he has. It's not his fault they decided to get rid of his supporting cast (Dawkins, Brown) and leave him on an island with the likes of Macho Harris, Demps, Lindley, Hobbs, etc. I think a lot of people who say he is overrated, have too high expectations for the guy. He also had Polamalu of Pittsburgh, who is a great player, as overrated, so I would not put much stock in this article, although I was happy to see him recognize Avant. He also had Ronde Barber as overrated. I would like to ask Donovan how he feels about that rating, and speaking of Donovan, would Prisco put him down as overrated? Probably not, he is a national writer, and therefore he would be placed at the top of the underrated the love affair with the national medis continues to grow.(see Rick Reilly this week). watsonmr

wow, Polamalu, is he crazy. That guy is all over the field making plays. Id have to read that reasoning, doesnt make sense. Avant is the man, way underrated. Maybe he gets more balls thrown his way with Kolb. peteike
MvNabb has been overrated since Syracuse. No results-- just clowning--That's leadership? J Ziggy
I dont think having the 3rd highest win percentage behind Manning and Brady is overrated folks, sorry. EaglesBleedMoney
It won't matter, defense will likely be a work in progress at best next year. DennyP
Comment removed.- Richly deserved, Asante. Overrated AND overpaid. The only thing Samuel is good at is getting interceptions. He is a liability in coverage, because he is unable to play press coverage, and is susceptible to double moves, and head fakes, since he likes to read the quarterbacks eyes and cheat to increase his chances of getting an interception. The interceptions, most of which are against the bottom half of QB's in the league, are at the expense of big plays given up. His inability to tackle are exposed on WR screens. Samuel is a below average CB who has inflated INT stats. arrowamy
we'll see who the loser is when the birds have more than 2 wins at the end of september. dude, you sound like doo doo fresh's alter ego. you are both friggin idiots and need to find something better to do with your time. jdbeach
has anyone ever seen TheKolbInterceptionMachineShow and DooDooFresh in the same room? 2 instigators on opposite sides of the spectrum. If not the same, I'd like to see them engage in a bare knuckle boxing match figgypop
LOOK AT THE PICTURE ABOVE! 'nuff said about asante's tackling (or lack-there-of)....who taught that guy how to tackle? and y do u think the patriots wanted no parts of that guy when his contract was up? my roommate in college is from boston and warned me of all of this and god damnit i hate to admit but he's right...OVERRATED! Anything_Philly_is4me- lol @ Kolbint.machinewhatver, I agree figgypop....McNabb was good 01-04...he has been overrated ever since. that team had one of the top D's under Jim Johnson so they really should have won at least 1 SB. McNabb just screwed stuff up half the time in big games. and yea samuel is overrated too. its not like hes solid every down plus gets some interceptions as a bonus. he whiffs on pics and tackles giving up 20 yard gains over and over, and then will occasionally get a pic. its not worth 58 million dollars. sheldon is better, and makes about 40 million dollars less.
