Asante: Eagles obviously don't want me

Ever since the Eagles signed Nnamdi Asomugha in the summer, they made no secret that Asante Samuel could be had for the right price.

Samuel's future with the team was a topic during training camp at Lehigh and again last week as Tuesday's trade deadline approached.

And while the Birds ended up hanging on to Samuel, the veteran cornerback doesn't sound thrilled about his standing with the team.

"It doesn't sit well with me," he said during an interview with Tim McManus on 97.5 The Fanatic. "Definitely I've been nothing but what they expected me to be when they brought me there, 22, 23 interceptions over my years, broke playoff records. So definitely doesn't sit well for me, and obviously they don't want me there so life goes on. So we'll see where I be at."

It's been a rough year for Samuel, Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Last year, Samuel was targeted 36 times, according to Football Outsiders. By my count, he's been targeted 30 times already in the first six games, and opposing quarterbacks are 13-for-30 for 167 yards when throwing in Samuel's direction.

After piling up 16 interceptions in 2009 and 2010, he has just one this year. But Samuel said his shaky relationship with the team will not affect his play on the field.

"As long as I'm getting paid, I'm gonna do my job," Samuel said. "Whoever cutting the check, I do my job, regardless of the matter so I'm not worried about that. I just know in the back of my head they don't want me. ...They put it out there so everybody can know that, so I know that, and everybody knows that... and Asante Samuel is a business entity first, so I'll make sure I handle my business accordingly."

Samuel is signed through 2013. He's making a reported $5.9M this season, is scheduled to make $8.4M in 2012 and $10.4M in 2013. Samuel turns 31 in January.
