Saturday Dawkins update
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
UPDATE: Les Bowen confirms on Eagletarian that the deal is done. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed when they heard it. Much more to come soon.
From earlier:
There continue to be conflicting reports this morning as to whether Brian Dawkins is officially a member of the Denver Broncos.
Has he signed? Has he agreed to terms? Do the Eagles still have a chance? Why did they allow him to leave town in the first place?
These are the questions going through the minds of Eagles fans everywhere.
I wish I had something conclusive to tell you, but I do not. So all I can do this morning is round up the various reports. A friend e-mailed me about an hour ago and said he won't believe it until Dawkins is standing up in front of the Denver media with a Broncos jersey. That might be the right way to look at this thing
I'll be monitoring the situation all day, as will reporters from The Inquirer and Daily News so continue to check back on philly.com throughout your weekend. And if you see a report or link that would be of interest to the group, don't hesitate to e-mail me.
Here's a roundup of what we have as of 9:45 a.m.:
** Les Bowen of the Daily News received a text from Dawkins' agent yesterday after the initial San Francisco Chronicle report, saying "in negotiations." As Bowen points out though, Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com later reported (at 9:29 p.m. Friday night) that Dawkins had officially signed a contract.
** A source tells Ray Parillo of The Inquirer: "It is not done." According to Parillo, that quote from an NFL source familiar with the negotiations came "early today." Parillo adds that the Broncos do not have an announcement scheduled, and that a report out of Denver says Dawkins could resume negotiations with the Eagles.
** UPDATE (12:05 p.m.): ESPN's John Clayton says the deal is "still up in the air" and "not done yet." Per Clayton, the Broncos are offering more money and more years than the Eagles. "If the money's better and the situation's better in Denver, he's going to leave," Clayton said on SportsCenter.
** UPDATE (12:07 p.m.): ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio reported at 10:30 a.m. that he has heard from someone who has seen the contract, and it is signed.
** Donovan McNabb told John Smallwood of the Daily News, "I hope that the story is wrong. I would be upset just like everybody else.
"It would definitely be different to walk into that locker room and not see No. 20. We set a goal to achieve something together [win a Super Bowl], and I hope we can still accomplish that."
** At some point after the initial San Francisco Chronicle report, NFL Network's Adam Schefter said the deal was not done. However, because NFL.com blogs don't have time-stamps, I'm not sure exactly when Schefter's post went up.
** The Denver Post does not confirm that Dawkins is a done deal. "The Broncos can drop a cannonball that would shake the league from here to the Liberty Bell if they can finish off a deal for Brian Dawkins," writes Mike Klis.
** As of last night, Bill Williamson of ESPN.com said a two-year deal was nearing completion, but he did not discount the idea of Dawkins returning to the Eagles.
** At 6:48 a.m. today, Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com reported that a source told him the Broncos had reached a deal with defensive tackle Darrell Reid. Marvez says Dawkins could be next, but he did not confirm that a deal was done.
** Clark Judge of CBSSports.com reported last night that there was no deal in place. Per Judge, Dawkins is expected to stay in Denver through Saturday while negotiations take place.
So there you have it. That is where we stand as of Saturday morning. Again, keep checking back on philly.com for updates throughout the day.
Nice, anyone know where Dawkins is stayig in Denver, I live here and will go convince him that this is not the place for him. Philly is. birdfan31
I concur with R3. Dawkins is stand-up guy and a life-long Eagle but truth of the matter is that he struggled the first half of this past season and, as he has aged, is not the defensive force he used to be. I would like to see him stay, more for team support and unity than anything else, but the sad truth remains his best professional days are behind him. Wherever Dawk goes, I will root for him. TBR1209- Imulus - Your link shows Dawkins as TBD, aka "To Be Determined". The Broncos have not made an official announcement as of noon Saturday. That said, this is the biggest emotional lose since I've been an Eagles fan (1975). Even if Dawk doesn't have what it takes,(although some other teams believe otherwise), he deserves more respect and dignity than what is being shown at the present time. The Eagles are silent on this one, and that bothers me a lot.

The lost of Dawkins will surely be felt. There are no leaders on this team or motivators. Sure Dawkins is 35, but he played great football last year and made the Pro Bowl. The eagles at least owe him the right to finish his career where it started. Its been a great start to free agency for the Birds. A Bengals O-line man, giving Lito away, and the lost of our leader. I can't wait for a another boring Andy Reid press conference to bring this all into perspective. Today I don't say Fly Eagles Fly, but Pray Eagles Fans Pray. kicker17
I honestly don't know if I can be a fan of this organization anymore. When Trotter left, it stunk- but I could move on... To let Dawkins goes- BRIAN DAWKINS an Eagles legend with probably the largest fanbase of any player on the team except maybe Westbrook. I am sorry- I just don't get it. Lurie, Banner and Reid keep telling us that they are focusing on winning us championships but keep making these HORRIBLE personnel moves. If you are going to commit to bringing and drafting serious players who will get us to win a Super Bowl- at least let us have our favorite players... Who do we have that is good enough to replace him both on and off the field??? I honestly think I am done, I have been a fan my entire life- through the Detmer and Rhoades years, through the "We Suck" tee shirts, through the constant build up and promise of championship only to be let down. Now, my favorite Eagle is gone. I think I am hanging up the green... this organization is run like a heartless corporation. Maybe my mom's side of the family is right. This kind of stuff doesn't happen in Black and Gold Land. SHAME ON YOU LURIE, REID and BANNER. ArcaneAlchemy

Dawk departing is a slap in the face to loyalty and leadership. It sends a horrible message to every player in that locker room letting them know that they're expendable. If Dawk ain't safe, then no one is. MICKDONAHUE...you obviously don't respect or care about the Birds or the sport if you don't understand that this is a dark day and a black eye for the game of football. It's one thing if it's Buck who deserves his shot somewhere (cause it obviously isn't happening w/the Birds), but to pass along a hall of famer is a completely different story. Footprints
We all love Dawk and will surely miss him. I'm sure if you asked him, he would say he will always be an eagle even if he signs with another team. Fact of the matter is, Pro Football is a difficult buisness, particularly in the salary cap era, and tough decisions must be made. I won't question the decisions Eagles management would make, because they have shown an uncanny knack when to let players walk. As much as my heart would love to have him stay, I believe we can upgrade the position. Brian is definitely on the downside of his career and doesn't have the skills he had earlier in his career. He has the heart of a warrior and we'll certainly miss him. When he retires, I have a feeling he will be back with the club in some capacity. amaysnfoods

Eagle's fans really are as dumb as I thought. If it was up to you guys Trotter would still be in there. Wake up! We need better players! Dawkins has done great things as an Eagle but he's done now! Thanks Dawk!

this is depressing if it comes true. but we have to remember its a business. dawkins, like all players, wants to get paid and wants to keep playing. apparently, denvers awful defense really really needs him pistolabus1
