Saturday Dawkins update

POSTED: Saturday, February 28, 2009, 10:02 AM

UPDATE: Les Bowen confirms on Eagletarian that the deal is done. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed when they heard it. Much more to come soon.

From earlier:

There continue to be conflicting reports this morning as to whether Brian Dawkins is officially a member of the Denver Broncos.

Has he signed? Has he agreed to terms? Do the Eagles still have a chance? Why did they allow him to leave town in the first place?

These are the questions going through the minds of Eagles fans everywhere.

I wish I had something conclusive to tell you, but I do not. So all I can do this morning is round up the various reports. A friend e-mailed me about an hour ago and said he won't believe it until Dawkins is standing up in front of the Denver media with a Broncos jersey. That might be the right way to look at this thing

I'll be monitoring the situation all day, as will reporters from The Inquirer and Daily News so continue to check back on philly.com throughout your weekend. And if you see a report or link that would be of interest to the group, don't hesitate to e-mail me.

Here's a roundup of what we have as of 9:45 a.m.:

** Les Bowen of the Daily News received a text from Dawkins' agent yesterday after the initial San Francisco Chronicle report, saying "in negotiations." As Bowen points out though, Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com later reported (at 9:29 p.m. Friday night) that Dawkins had officially signed a contract.

** A source tells Ray Parillo of The Inquirer"It is not done." According to Parillo, that quote from an NFL source familiar with the negotiations came "early today." Parillo adds that the Broncos do not have an announcement scheduled, and that a report out of Denver says Dawkins could resume negotiations with the Eagles.

** UPDATE (12:05 p.m.): ESPN's John Clayton says the deal is "still up in the air" and "not done yet." Per Clayton, the Broncos are offering more money and more years than the Eagles. "If the money's better and the situation's better in Denver, he's going to leave," Clayton said on SportsCenter.

** UPDATE (12:07 p.m.): ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio reported at 10:30 a.m. that he has heard from someone who has seen the contract, and it is signed.

** Donovan McNabb told John Smallwood of the Daily News, "I hope that the story is wrong. I would be upset just like everybody else.

"It would definitely be different to walk into that locker room and not see No. 20. We set a goal to achieve something together [win a Super Bowl], and I hope we can still accomplish that."

** At some point after the initial San Francisco Chronicle report, NFL Network's Adam Schefter said the deal was not done. However, because NFL.com blogs don't have time-stamps, I'm not sure exactly when Schefter's post went up.

** The Denver Post does not confirm that Dawkins is a done deal. "The Broncos can drop a cannonball that would shake the league from here to the Liberty Bell if they can finish off a deal for Brian Dawkins," writes Mike Klis.

** As of last night, Bill Williamson of ESPN.com said a two-year deal was nearing completion, but he did not discount the idea of Dawkins returning to the Eagles.

** At 6:48 a.m. today, Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com reported that a source told him the Broncos had reached a deal with defensive tackle Darrell Reid. Marvez says Dawkins could be next, but he did not confirm that a deal was done.

** Clark Judge of CBSSports.com reported last night that there was no deal in place. Per Judge, Dawkins is expected to stay in Denver through Saturday while negotiations take place.

So there you have it. That is where we stand as of Saturday morning. Again, keep checking back on philly.com for updates throughout the day.

Even when he was out with the stinger he was the most inspiring player on the team. Do SOMETHING to keep him.

There is a number at which the Eagles would sign Dawk and get the deal done. And there is a number at which Dawk would sign and feel good about finishing his career in Philly. What we are talking about is a gap between two numbers. Listen up, Jeffrey and Joe: what will it cost you in lost revenues and badwill if you don't pay the difference between what you want to pay and what it will take you to keep Brian Dawkins as an Eagle? If you've monitored any fan reaction, you stand to lose millions if you pull the PR blunder of the century and not bring Dawk back. If you are truly the "Gold Standard," then spend the gold and get it done!

I am wondering how much more I can take as an Eagles fan. I am so sick of hearing from the front office on how great and successful they are. I am absolutely repulsed by what management is doing to this team.

The fact that Dawk isn't an exception to whatever rule the Eagles have speaks volumes about how little this organization cares about its fan base or its players.

Regardless of how I'm viewed after saying this, I'll deal. It'll be extremely hard to follow the Eagles if they let this happen. This is like taking the heart out of the city.

I was open to the idea that this was a possibility. It is deeply upsetting, not so much that we aren't able to move on without him, because we will have to eventually, I am upset about the way this whole thing has been handled: Letting him go, taking him for granted, not having someone ready to fill his void (or at least suitable as it would be impossible to fill what he has brought to this team), and that there have been no reports about the Eagles talking to him, just him talking to Denver.

So, far nothing "official" yet on Dawk in Denver. The fact the FO let it get this close is a disgrace. With Lito possibly heading to the Jets what the hell else do we have in d-backs/free safeties? We talk about the building up of the offense, but is it going to happen at the expense of the d? Are we going to have a role reversal where the offense will score 35+ pts/game just to post a winning score of 35-34? There is a lot of uncertainty and I do not feel confident at all right now. Hoping for the best is all we can do at this point.

All Brian Dawkins does is run around trying to launch himself into opponents. In the NFC championship, I think he used his arms to tackle once. The rest of the time, he's just trying to spear people. Sure 10% of the time he makes a big hit, but the rest of the time he just bounces off people. This attitude affects the entire D and has cost them in a lot of big games (the NFC champ., the divisional game against Saints, etc.). I wouldn't miss him much.

Laurie, Banner, Reid, somebody, PICK UP THE PHONE and stop this nightmare! If not your legacy will be worst than Norman Braman's. You guys may own/run the team but you just don't get the whole Bird's in Philly thing.

A deal should have been done to keep B Dawk with the Eagles. There's really no reason that he should even be on the market; especially with no one to replace him. Dawk still has a few good quality years left in him. Andy Reid makes me sick!
