Would Kolb make sense for Cleveland?

A flurry of links to get to today.

We start with a column from Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post, which suggests an Eagles-Browns deal involving Kevin Kolb would make sense for both teams. What should the Birds ask for in return? Defensive tackle Shaun Rogers.

Writes Lombardi:

Rogers would be a gap closer on the field. He would give the Eagles a dominating inside player, something they don’t currently have on their roster and someone who can match up with the Cowboys’ size along their offensive line. Rogers is signed to a long-term deal, he’s kept his weight down and he was a model citizen in Cleveland last season - all of which would be appealing to the Eagles. Kolb gives the Browns a future quarterback, something Holmgren knows he needs, without having to part with a draft pick. This trade might be a win/win for both teams.

As I said earlier this week, I don't see how it makes sense for the Eagles to part ways with Kolb. From all indications, he's their quarterback of the future, regardless of the direction they choose to go in next season. If they stick with McNabb, Kolb provides a serviceable backup, which they need. If McNabb's dealt, Kolb gets his chance to start. He's under contract for another year and would become a restricted free agent in 2011.

I can't envision a scenario where they'd deal him for a defensive tackle that will turn 31 before next season, especially when their current DTs are former first-round picks. But then again, I didn't envision the scenario where they drafted Kolb in the first place. And I didn't envision the scenario where they brought in Michael Vick last summer.

In other words, I don't envision a lot of things the Eagles do beforehand, so I can't say anything would surprise me at this point.

McNabb and Denver

An ESPN report surfaced Sunday that said the Denver Broncos were one of a handful of teams that had discussed the possibility of adding McNabb. But two sources tell The Denver Post's Jeff Legwold emphatically that there is "no truth" to reports that Denver would be a landing spot for him.

Lito's Bonus

Thought this was funny. Manish Mehta of the Newark Star-Ledger Tweeted about Lito Sheppard yesterday. He said he asked Lito if he was flexible on the $10M bonus he's due. "I think I'm worth it," Lito said. "That's flexible."

Vanden Bosch

The Titans' Kyle Vanden Bosch has been mentioned as one of the few pass rushers that could be available in free agency. Last week we wrote about Vanden Bosch's comments that a return to Tennessee seemed unlikely, but coach Jeff Fisher seems to disagree.

"Kyle's not the first player who's not been contacted," Fisher told Gary Estwick of The Tennessean . "We had some discussions prior to the start of the season."

I lose patience with these "trade McNabb" comments. Didn't Trent Dilfer and Doug Williams win Super Bowls? McNabb is better than both...he is in the top 1/3 of QB's in the NFL. If Andy did a better job filling the other spots we would win. Remember that our SB loss was to a team that was CONVICTED of CHEATING. Though I am impatient without the Superbowls I think both Andy and Donovan have earned the right to stay and keep trying.

That is the most idiotic trade rumor! Presumably we would upgrade our D-Line at the expense of our future/present QB? So McNabb would be the starter this season and beyond? Or is it Vick? Or do they draft a QB, like Kolb? If there is ANY truth to this rumor, it defies any coherent thought

I've read a few people posts that 5 can't win pressure games or in the 4th quarter of games. How many has Kolb won? What happened in the N.O. game last year when he had to lead a come back? Answer pick 6!

I think anyone who believes McNabb is out of here is smoking some funny stuff. Until I see something from Kolb, I wouldn't send McNabb anywhere. Let him play most of the preseason, then maybe the fanbase would be convinced. Otherwise, #5 is the starting QB. Although I wouldn't want to see Vick go, use him as trade bait. He deserves a chance to play (and as a sidenote, you'd be shocked to see how many felons are playing in the NFL-currently) Does Kolb deserve a chance to start, of course he does..His time is coming.

How is trading our future for a 31 year old defensive lineman a win/win for the Eagles? Lombardi is an idiot, not even worthy of being termed a putz-----he is a mini-brained petzel, not to be confused with a fat doughy pretzel. However, if the shoe fits----

I think the Eagles should move to a new city and trade for some "real" fans.

No one has a clue if Kolb is an NFL QB. A few games is not a season where defenses game plan for him. I laugh at the McNabb can not win big games garbage. He has won big games over the years vs Dallas and Giants, along with several playoff games. Thats just stupid talk to even mention Kolb in the same breath.

For whoever, I would want high draft picks PLUS a starting DB or safety. I think have rookie QBs on the squad to sit for years is a big waste. If McNabb went down, the Eagles just get a proven non-starter who may not even be playing (jeff garcia-type).

AllDawk_AllTheTime, Dean1 The Manager, Smashmouth, papreps ,carmichael17, kramer65, nuggett, I agree with you all. It's time for a new day. Trade Kolb and I guarantee it will go down as one of the biggest blunders in football history as he goes on to take his next team to the Super Bowl while kicking the Eagles a-- in the process. And there will be lynch mobs outside of the Linc soon thereafter.

Lombardi = idiotic. I'm sure Cleveland wants another unproven QB for their roster in return for one of their best defensive players. Maybe we can plan for the future and get JaMarcus Russell for Trent Cole? Time wasting offseason BS. When do pitchers and catchers report...

I think that there are a lot of critics out there who really have prematurely under-rated Kolb...i think he is really going to be a revelation..a lot of fans are going to be surprised at how good he is right now!!...during the little time he has had in game situations it is clear that he has the accuracy, arm strength, intelligence and leadership skills..and doesn't fold under pressure, to take the Birds a lot further than some people may conjecture...if AR starts calling sensible offensive game strategies and if Kolb is given a chance to audible (isn't it mind blowing that on one hand Peyton calls the entire game himself with suggestions from Tom Moore while McNabb, after 11 seasons, is still not allowed to deviate from the Holy Grail as envisioned by AR and his BYU ancestors...) and really be a full service quarterback and not a Reid Robot the O will soon be great with Kolb...now if we can somehow bring back the days of the Buddy Ryan type D the SupBowl will assuredly quickly follow...it doesn't take that long to reload in today's NFL (plz note: not the "LFL" swaggerbragger, you dimwit)...get McNabb out of the conf. and start building a no prisoners D and it will soon be lots o fun around here...in the meantime....GO PHIGHTINS!!!... as for prognosticators such as Lombardi...Vince he ain't ...UGH!!!
