4/21: Eagles draft buzz
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
Every day, from now until the draft, I'll round up the latest Eagles buzz on MTC. Here is today's installment.
***
Today, we round up some newly released mocks. If you missed my post from Friday, here are three thoughts on the Eagles' draft.
Meanwhile, Chad Reuter of NFL.com thinks the Eagles will take a shot on Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe:
Andy Reid doesn't mind taking a chance on a player's upside, and the extremely athletic, 346-pound Poe has as much potential as any player in this draft.
Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com has the Birds going with LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers in the first round:
Brockers may not make it past the Chiefs, but if he does, the Eagles will be salivating. Brockers plays with power against the run and while he's not a great pass rusher, the Eagles need a run stuffer much more than another pass rusher.
Caplan has the Eagles landing Cal linebacker Mychal Kendricks and Nebraska LB Lavonte David with their two second-round picks.
Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com thinks North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples will be the pick:
The Eagles can go a few directions here and there are a lot of talented players still on the board. Coples had a monster 2011 season and a solid combine. He could play defensive end or rush the passer from the outside linebacker spot. A lot of draftniks have him going in the top 10. He could be a steal at 15 for Philly.
Schrager's mock goes three full rounds. He has the Birds taking Cal offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz and Arizona State QB Brock Osweiler in the second. In the third, he gives them Arkansas wide receiver/return man Joe Adams.
Michael Lombardi of NFL.com has the Eagles taking Syracuse defensive end Chandler Jones. It's worth noting that Lombardi has Jones going ahead of South Carolina defensive end/outside linebacker Melvin Ingram.
Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com also has the Birds taking Jones:
The Eagles are still reeling from their decision to bypass Jason Pierre-Paul in favor of Brandon Graham two drafts ago. Graham, selected with Philly's pick at 13, has three sacks through two seasons. Drafted by the division-rival Giants two picks later, Pierre-Paul is a first-team All Pro. While not as explosive off the edge, Jones has some JPPish traits as a long-armed, high-effort pass rusher with loads of "growth potential." He'd be the Eagles' left defensive end of the future.
OurLads.com has the Eagles taking Brockers in the first round:
Brockers will help get push up the middle to force the ball to the edges. Started 14 games in his career. In 2011 had 9.5 tackles for loss. He had 6 tackles in the SEC Championship game vs Georgia.
They've got the Eagles taking Iowa State offensive tackle Kelechi Osemele and Nebraska LB Lavonte David in the second.
CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
Good news for draft-viewing this year. ESPN and the NFL Network have agreed to not show prospects on the phone in the green room right before they are selected. I think most people often found that practice annoying, spoiling the actual moment when the pick was announced. NFL reporters may still try to "break news" of the pick beforehand, but hopefully, this will allow the suspense to unfold a little bit.

- Eli is very debateable until last season show me a better than average statistical season.look at his td/int rate.that was A DECADE ago anyway we were talking recent or i would have added westbrook cole mcnabb dawkins not to mention i said good players not heavy players no the eagles dont have a 265 lb rb but they have the leagues td leader in mccoy #2 in yds they also drafted a multiple pro bowl rb in westbrook in the third.ahmad bradshaw?what about him?i hate arguing with giant fans.doesnt ur team have its own site?

Two of you guys do know Jack. 2smart4philly
If the plan is to draft at DT, why did you sign Landri? He'll be unneeded if you draft high. I'd try to shore up at ILB, or a potential starting QB (Vick will get hurt this year). That or get the safety you need. If you need to look at DT, try to find someone in 4-5 who has an upside. Dennis Downey

Landri is signed for 1 year, Patterson had brain surgery, Jenkin is >30, Dixon is untested in wide 9. Ergo DT OR same issues in secondary where DRC is on last year Marsh is a waste, nnamdi >30, Hanson average to if top DT available go that route, if not best secondary player available unless Kuech slides to us. Definitely NO PICK ON PROJECTED TALENT> Take a guy who has already produced on the field and leave the guess work at home. tpizza
Only one elite safety. Tons of red zone wrs. This year is stacked with dl, so go get one. Linebackers in second round fman727
Poe is a stiff - that makes him an Andy/Howie lock for certain. NM Eagle fan
I am sure Andy & Co. think that they can "coach up" Poe... Bobphxville
Uhhhhhh, actually the Giants don't have a 265lb power back either. Jacobs is a 9er now. And Jacobs was big, but no power back, which is why he is a 9er now. And 2 out of 7 is one every other year? Must be a new math...or something...sheez. tpizza
we're set at DE. cole, babin, graham and tapp are good for now. cant use a 1st rd pick on a backup that might only see 15 snaps.

Also u said "jacobs has won two superbowls in his 7 year career thats almost a superbowl every other year."now before i point out ur obvious lack of math skills ill ask u what he did in those superbowls.not much.now onto ur math.seven years divided by two championships is actually a little less than(notice THAN not THEN, u might wanna work on that as well)1 every three years.nice attwmpt at second grade math though pal. Sean s.- lol...uhh...that "heavy" back has two superbowls...and andy's lightwieghts have zero in 14 years...the team was best with guys he DIDNT draft for the most part...and since it has ben filled with guys he drafted and signed the record has TAKEN A NOSE DIVE. ITS EVEN CLOSE. 11-5, 12-4, 12-4, 13-3 in 4 straight years to 6-10, 9-6-1, 10-6, and 8-8. There might be a pattern there...put down the kool-aid...Andy Reid will never win a SB. N E V E R...P A T H E T I C
- Yeah the team andy inherited was awesome drafted so much better thats why he chose mcnabb @#2 overall.then went on to 5 nfc championship.dont change the subject to reid sucks ur statementwas the giants draft better so dont move on to a new subject until u admit u were wrong about the first one.THEN ill prove ur next argument wrong.
Sean s. - lol, Mcnabb wasnt even that great of a pick...any of those QB's would have done fairly well in Andys QB-friendly system ANY OF THEM. if Mcnab was drafted to cleveland or something do you think he is going to 4 championship games with Brian Dawkins and the #2 rated defense ? with his 58% percent accuracy ? the answer is absolutely not. Akili Smith, Tim Couch and any of them would have still won just as many games with this Jim Johnson defense as McNabb...Reids system is interchangable with ANY QB...so no, its wasnt some magical pick...McNabb was decent...any of those QB's would have won ALOT of games in that system just as Mcnabb did lol..
- also "prove wrong" that Andy did not draft Brian Dawkins, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent , Hugh Douglas, Jeremiah Trotter, Jon Runyan, Tra Thomas, Duce Staley, Terrell Owens, etc. etc., virtually EVERY IMPACT PLAYER ON THAT TOP DEFENSE WAS NOT DRAFTED BY REID. ALMOST ALL OF THE BEST PLAYERS. ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE. WHO DRAFTED THEM...RAY RHODES, TOM MODRAK, AND OTHER NFL COACHES. NOT ONE OF THEM DRAFTED BY YOUR HERO ANDY. NOT ONE. or is this some kind of conspiracy against the great Andy Ried lol
