Report: Fitzgerald urges Cardinals to pursue Kolb

Will Andy Reid deal Kevin Kolb this offseason? (David Maialetti/Staff Photographer)

Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald wouldn't mind catching passes from Kevin Kolb next season, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

On ESPN's 12-hour pre-game show (OK, that's an exaggeration, but only slightly), Schefter said the Cardinals' front office has gone to Fitzgerald to get his take on who their next quarterback should be.

And according to the report, Fitzgerald's "first recommendation" was for Arizona to pursue a trade for Kolb.

Fitzgerald is entering the final year of his contract, and Arizona obviously wants to keep him happy.

The report is interesting because it speaks in part to Kolb's reputation around the league, even though he only has seven career starts under his belt.

Schefter said Fitzgerald also mentioned Marc Bulger's name to the Cardinals' brass. And it's worth noting that Donovan McNabb's name was not mentioned in the report.

Just last week in an interview with Dan Patrick, Kolb reiterated that he wants to start somewhere next season.

"I had a meeting with Andy, and told him that I feel like I'm prepared, I'm ready to take that next step. He knows," Kolb said.

Albert Breer of NFL Network wrote last week that he expects there to be plenty of interest in Kolb:

One way for the Seahawks to address their quarterbacking question could be to make another run at Kevin Kolb. And trust this: If Kolb is out there, there will be plenty of suitors for his services, and the Eagles will be able to extract a pretty hefty haul. Remember, the Browns and Seahawks made inquiries last offseason about Kolb but were rebuffed as it became clear the Eagles preference was to deal Donovan McNabb. Cleveland, of course, has insight because of GM Tom Heckert's Philadelphia roots, while Seattle was another West Coast offense team that figured Kolb's transition could be a smooth one. The Browns' interest might be gone because of the emergence of Colt McCoy, but other pursuers that weren't around, like the Cardinals, 49ers and Vikings, could be in the running this time. Makes sense, right, that a 26-year-old quarterback with an Andy Reid pedigree would be in demand? Of course it does. So expect the price to be pretty steep.

Of course, as you know by now, trades will be tricky this offseason until the new CBA is in place. If there's no agreement by the draft in April, suitors for Kolb would not be allowed to include 2011 picks in any potential deals.

And the Eagles could end up deciding to hold on to Kolb, who has one more year remaining on his contract.

SUPER BOWL PICK

Give me the Steelers (+3).

And don't forget that I'll be chatting the game tonight.

If you missed it from Saturday, I blogged on the Howard Mudd-Jim Washburn connection.

That is pretty high praise for Kevin Kolb. Larry Fitzerald is arguably the best reciever in the NFL.

This is funny, b/c I was hoping the Eagles would try to trade Kolb for Fitzgerald...I know i'm in a fantasy world for that, but we desperately need a number 1 receiver to compliment our two very good speedy number 2 receivers...

There is not many impact players on the Cards roster, the only thing I think they'll get in return for Kolb is 2012 picks, which wont help the iggles in 2011.

Best to keep Kolb and trade the comeback player of the year to the cards for better draft picks or players-Arizona is very liberal as far as guns go, he could probably pack one himself even thou being a felon.

If I was Fitz and just got done catching passes from Derek Anderson and John Skelton I guess Fitz WOULD be like wiff and think Kolb's balls would look ptetty good. Zona was and is my guess anyway. Sign a vet back up to do what Kolb does now [ride the pine], get a few good picks and maybe Kerry Rhodes and put the stake in the Kolb era once and for all. It's been fun pigsticker and take your teeny bopper fan with ya...tick...tick...tick...

If i was fitz i'd be pursuing another team! i say trade klob and djax straight up for fitzgerald! he doesn't want mcnabb because he knows if the ball hits the ground before you catch it,it's ruled an incomplete pass.kolb will be gone next year and mcnabb will be back with the birds as vicks backup! i say let kolb go and give jeff garcia a call,a real QB!

His color doesn't have jack to do with anything.....the man is weak in his position.......throwing, average, situational awareness...NONE.....ability to get through a series without ending up on his back....yeah right......while some may have skin color issues, aka MV, most sports real sports fans care about wins and we really don't care the color of the hero of the week.

I seen Skelton play 1 game, and he was half decent. Keep in mind it was only 1 game. He was a rookie this year, and needs work, but he's a big guy. As for Kolb, you need to trade him because this is the last year of his contract, and you want to get some value for him while you can, or he'll walk. As far as McNabb, I'm not sure who would want him now. I think it would hurt his pride to be a back up here. I think Shanahan holds some status among his NFL coaching brethern and the fact that McNabb had issues with him, I believe damages McNabb's marketability.

Wow. Think about it. If the Eagles trade Kolb (anywhere) for an impact player of need or a 1st round + a lower round pick and sign McNabb to back up Vick...I think wolf's head would explode (a guy can dream, can't he?)

wiff!!!! Sobered up already? Atta boy! And it's more like "I'll even take Kolb rather than have Anderson back again". I'll definitely take the picks and players we can get for our 4 year project. So much promise, so little result. Fitz is good a catching dying ducks so it may be a good match. And I hear they have super soft benches in Zona. Wouldn't want Kolbby to get a flat arse there after he can't beat out Shelton now would we...for wiff's sake. But no matter what it's still tick...tick...tick...

McNabb would NEVER EVER sign on with the Eagles as a backup. First off, his ego wouldn't let him do that, and secondly, he'd never sign for backup money, especially not with the Eagles. His career may end holding a clipboard for some team, but rest assured, that team won't be the Eagles.

Did anyone read the actual article on ESPN? There was no ringing endorsement - he just mentioned Kolb's name first, then Mark Bulger...in fact, there is no direct quote from Fitzgerald AT ALL. LMAO So its entirely possible the Cardinals brass asked Fitz who he thought they should go after and he rattled off some names. If he was adamant about them signing Kolb, you can bet there would have been a quote.

I don't know if Kolb will be a successful starting quarterback in this league or not. However, I can't help but wonder: If he goes somewhere else and turns out to be a good QB, will any of the people who bash him in these comments actually man up and admit they were wrong? Before anyone decides to throw their oh-so-clever "Don't worry, it'll never happen" comment on here, do you think you can come up with something a little more creative?

It will be continued ironic misery for the Eagle fans as they continue to shoot for the wild card round each year if they lost Kolb. Three years from now, he will be one of the best while the Eagles will be running through a parade of vets and retreads to see who will be the QB for their head coach (Juan Castillo).

Yeah, he'll be one of the best at throwing accurate passes to the other team....He throws too many picks. He played in less than a 3rd of the games Vick played this year, yet thru more picks than Vick.

the offensive line we had played into vicks hands because of his run ability, that o line couldnt protect kolb being a pocket passer, hence the int's, I wonder how he would do with a good game by our offensive line? oh yeh..the game against Atlanta at home this season...just saying

Ha ha Vick will watch Kolb lead his team to the playoffs from his jail cell. Reid will get fired. In any case Eagles want to keep Kolb because Vick stunk in the last 6 games. Vick has been exposed and the NFL has his number. You can't win the Super Bowl when you have a panic run first style spindly injury prone QB like Vick.

why cant we just trade vick, hes injury prone and getting up there in age, weve been shaping kevin kolb into a starting quarterback for four years and doesnt he remind you of another backup that just won the superbowl? accurate pocket passer with slight ability to run and hes a young easily a ten year starter given a healthy offensive line, trade vick, possibly to the defense heavy afc, for anything that can give our defense a boost and we could have the potential to go on another 8-10 year run of having a solid team, and potentially a championship winning team

You can't trade a guy without a contract, but what about the franchise tag?

I would like the Birds to get something for one of them if the haul is big enough. My gut says Vick has actually peaked and might be a bit more overvalued right now, but I don't think he can be traded, making it a moot point.

    Anybody have the facts?

fitzgerald obviously has never watched kolb pretend to play, he has a weak arm very little mobility and can't take a hit cardinals best chance would be get rid of anderson keep the young qb and bring in mcnabb that would give them a good chance at the play-offs, kolb would be on injured reserve before the 6th game of the season.
