It's hard to believe that just last year, Kevin Curtis was one of the Eagles' starting wide receivers in Week 1.
Now, just over a year later, he's preparing to get back into the league while battling testicular cancer.
The Eagles released Curtis in March after he spent three seasons here. Doug Robinson of the Deseret News writes about how Curtis had surgery a couple weeks ago to remove a cancerous testicle.
The good news is that the cancer has not spread. Curtis had to decide between undergoing radiation treatments now or reporting for tests every three months to make sure the cancer had not returned. He chose to hold off on radiation treatments with hopes of playing in the league this season. Curtis was hoping to hold off on surgery also, but that was considered too risky.
Per the article, at least six teams have contacted Curtis since the Eagles released him.
"I don't know if anyone is interested now," he said. "Teams with issues called and said let us know when you're ready. I was the best option during camp. My agent will send a letter to the teams telling them what's going on and to keep us in mind for an emergency guy. He'll tell them our plan and when I'll be ready. A lot is going to depend on needs."
Curtis' best season came with the Eagles in 2007 when he caught 77 balls for 1,110 yards and six touchdowns.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
Here's the weekly roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles as they prepare to take on the 49ers.
SI.com's Peter King credits Eagles fans for giving Donovan McNabb a standing ovation last week:
I think the Eagles fans did one of the classiest things I've seen in that city in -- well, in forever, when they heartily cheered Donovan McNabb.
McNabb never delivered the voracious Philly crowd a championship, but he played his best and he showed class for 11 years, and on Sunday the fans responded -- stunningly, I thought -- with probably 85 percent cheers when he was introduced last in the pregame introductions.
ESPN.com dropped the Eagles three spots to No. 17 in its power rankings:
The Eagles have gone from quarterback crisis to quarterback disaster.
Jason Whitlock of FoxSports.com rips Andy Reid for his clock management:
In the most hyped game of the season, Reid’s inability to manage the clock overshadowed Michael Vick’s potentially season-changing rib injury, Donovan McNabb’s mixed-bag return to Lincoln Financial Field and Kolb’s return to the Philadelphia lineup. After watching the Eagles bungle a touchdown opportunity just before halftime, Herm Edwards and Dick “Father Time” Curl were reportedly spotted cackling in joyous celebration.
Michael Lombardi of NFL.com goes easy on Reid this week for his clock management:
Reid got blindsided, because when Kevin Kolb went to call the play, the quarterback entered the huddle with just 10 seconds left on the play clock, which coming off a timeout seems to be strange (and suspicious). Most teams, once the timeout is nearing conclusion, send their quarterback on the field with a call, but for some reason the clock was running and the Birds' entire bench failed to notice until it was too late. It was a bad play, but I am not sure this is all Reid's fault.
Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com has the Eagles 20th in his power rankings:
It's a good thing that the rest of teams in the NFC East aren't playing consistently good football. The Eagles have to be kicking themselves for last week's loss to the Redskins. The injuries continue to pile up on offense, so it will be interesting to see if Philadelphia can overcome them.
Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com has the Eagles 15th:
It's back to Kevin Kolb now with the injury to Michael Vick. This is the guy the Eagles wanted to play anyway. But the line might get him killed.
USA Today has the Eagles 15th in its power rankings.

Interesting. The overall feel from the national writers doesn't seem to exude too much confidence in Kolb. For the Eagles' sakes, I hope he does well, but so far he hasn't shown what it takes to be an NFL starter. We'll see & hopefully not see what Kafka can do. If KK struggles & gets injured and Kafka plays well in relief, I'm afraid KK will curl up in the fetus position and never come out. Mabus
I've changed my position on this one realizing Reid got screwed. But with the other 6 dozen clock baffles in recent past he deserves all that he's getting and maybe he'll come out of his coma.... HighDrama
Peter King is a bandwagooner, because everyone else is on the "Philly Fans Are the Worse" kick, he is too. I've been to games in Philly, of course, and games eleswhere, and trust me, the same things happen elsewhere. Just as the media will praise one QB for throwing 2 TDs and 3 int, yet dog out another for the same effort, they ignore unruly behavior elsewhere, but are quick to dog Philly fans every chance they get. Hats off to Kevin. I hope he beats the cancer and I hope he lands somewhere in the league. everydayguy
MTC might get more hits and comments if they asked Kevin Curtis what he thinks of the Phils' postseason chances. FairmountFrank- Jason Whitlock is an idiot, and wouldn't know a real story if he plopped his fat A@@ on it. mccarte1
this aint our business! NRA AL
as a cancer survivor myself,,best wishes to Kevin Curtis he's always been a class act on the field and off.....wolf. wolf 4- Hoping & praying Curtis has a quick and full recovery
I have a friend who won his battle against this type of cancer.I pray
that Kevin wins his. raymonddouglas- Curtis seemed like a grounded dude. I wish him all the best.
Best wishes to Kevin Curtis. God bless. junethe4th
Isn't Jeff Garcia available for 150K to buy out of his present contract. Not only does he know the so called west coast offense but certainly could be a mentor to kolb (which neither McNabb or Vick) can be. ox- Too bad for Curtis. He was great for the Eagles. I pray that things will work out. Think Lance Armstrong.
It puts it all in perspective. I wish Kevin Curtis the best recovery. Ballgame- God bless you and your family Kevin. You are a soldier!
Good luck KC. Romus- Best of luck to Curtis. Very serviceable receiver and overall good guy. Hope he beats the cancer and lands on someone's roster. esesjay
brotherman1,good luck kevin k.get well... brotherman1- Keep fighting Curtis. Sounds like you're on your way to beating this thing.
I wish people woule stop bringing up Jeff Garcia as an asnwer to our quaterback problems. I am guessing that OX did not see pro's vs Joe's. Garcia is washed up, he couldn't beat a bunch of nobody's, and you want him here to mentor Kolb! The Eagles do have a quarterback coach already! Don't they? taycom- prostate and testicular cancer are just as prevelent as breast cancer if not more so, yet there's no blue ribbons or blue gloves being worn or any walk till there's a cure for guys. three of my best friends all have at least one testicle taken from cancer, if not both. don't have a single friend or family member die from breast cancer like my grandfather and great grandfather did. i'm all for curing breast cancer, but if you had a choice of cancer anywhere, i don't think the family jewels-reproductive system or colorectal area would be a top choice. it's time they start supporting guys. Evilvet
- Get well soon Kevin!
- Great point Evilvet. The Komen foundation must have collected more than enough money to support breast cancer illness by now. Survival rates are the highest. Job well done. Now, the they should refocus their substantial marketing efforts towards prostate and testicular cancer. If not, someone else should. Or maybe Lance Armstrong should team up with them. They are WELL organized.
Sheil: Most men are totally uneducated about this scary disease. How did he find out about it? What are the early warning signs? brmorgen81
Good Luck Kevin, we will be pulling for you. Hope to see you back in the league soon. GrmRpr
I'll always be an Eagles fan, whether they're 16-0 or 0-16. But right now they are a M E S S. steveku2- I lost both of my parents to cancer; I certainly wish nothing but the best for Kevin.
