Police: Saturday’s gun buyback yielded 92 weapons

Ninety-two guns were turned in Saturday, Sept. 29, during a gun buy-back at the New Bethel AME Church,  1646 Prospect Ave., Willow Grove.

The program was sponsored by Upper Moreland, Upper Dublin and Abington Police Departments along with Bridging Our Communities, a grass roots organization.

The buyback was in response to a murder which occurred in North Hills on July 17, 2012.

GIANT Food Stores donated $75 gift cards which were exchanged for the guns that were turned in. Police accepted the firearms with no questions asked.

Deputy Chief John A. Livingood, of the Abington police force, said all 92 will be destroyed.

“We are very appreciative of GIANT for making it possible to ensure that these guns will never be used to commit a crime,” Livingood said.
