Come one, come all - for bocce ball!
In celebration of Norristown's Bicentennial, the Norristown Bocce League will host a free tournament weekend next month.
A learn-to-play seminar for all ages will be held on Sat., Aug. 4, from noon to 6 p.m. The actual tournament will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 5. Both events will be held at the Elmwood Park bocce courts, on Harding Boulevard in Norristown. Light picnic fare will be provided.
There are more than 2,000 registered bocce team members in the Norristown area alone, according to event organizer Dave Fusco of Norristown.
"We invite everyone down for open court bocce and to meet the members of the community and enjoy a great time," said Fucso.
Bocce dates back to ancient Rome. Two or more teams have four balls in a team color. A smaller ball gets thrown about four to eight yards away into the grass or court. Each team tries to throw or roll their balls as close as possible to the small ball without touching it.
Registration for the tournament is preferred, but walk-ups are welcome. Call 610-389-2086 for more information.
