Blue Cross, RSVP join hands to boost young readers

Blue Cross, RSVP join hands to boost young readers

Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia has joined with RSVP of Montgomery County to prepare 600 books for donation to Montgomery County Head Start preschoolers.

Independence Blue Cross employees at two locations wrapped picture books in the comic sections of the newspaper. Employees created customized book marks, themed to match the story “Albertine's Got Talent;” the tale is aimed at helping instill in preschoolers the love of reading.

"Many employees who participated have grandchildren of their own" said Janis Glusman, RSVP's Family Literacy program coordinator. "They were eager to help young readers receive new books so they may start their own home libraries. For many Head Start preschoolers, these books are the only ones they own."

The activity was planned by RSVP as part of its corporate partnership initiative, allowing firms to customize teambuilding volunteer activities that address the needs of some of the local community's most vulnerable populations - disadvantaged preschoolers.

RSVP of Montgomery County is dedicated to promoting volunteerism among adult area residents and businesses.
