Newcomer Connor Kurtz, 17, won the right to appear on the ballot for school board in the Daniel Boone Area School District this November. Color the Daniel Boone High School junior as pleased. See what he has to say about his primary win:

Q: Were you surprised to win?

A: I spent the afternoon talking to voters and I became very optimistic about my chances. When I looked at the results that night I was surprised by the huge margin of victory that I won by.

Q: How are you feeling about the media attention you are getting?

A: I understand that my candidacy excites a lot of people. I'm happy that the community is embracing my fiscally responsible, conservative ideas.

Q: What is your platform, going into November?

A: My platform is built upon the need for fiscal responsibility within the Daniel Boone Area School District. Daniel Boone's taxes are in the top 15% of the entire state and I'm running to alleviate the crushing tax burden on our seniors and families. In order to do this, I'm looking to cut waste from within the district.

Q: Do you think your age will be a help or hindrance in getting elected, and also in serving on the school board?

A: I don't believe that my age was a factor in the election. Amity Township voters overwhelming supported my fiscally responsible, pro-taxpayer agenda. Likewise, voters believe that my status as a student will be and asset to the board in the coming years due to the fact that I will be able to assess the value of district programs from a users perspective.

Q: Why did you run in the first place?

A: I ran because I believed that the school board was in dire need of a new, fiscally conservative voice to say, "enough is enough" in regards to spending and taxing.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish as board member?

A: I hope to lower property tax rates as well as well as cutting waste from within the district.

Q: How long is the term?

A: 4 years.

Q: How many colleagues will you have on the board? Have you reached out to them?

A: I will have 8 colleagues on the board (9 total members). I have not yet reached out to any; however, some are beginning to reach out to me.

Q: What are your career plans?

A: I'm not sure yet. Right now I'm focused upon serving Amity Township to the best of my ability on the Daniel Boone School Board.

Q: What are your favorite subjects, and outside activities?

A: My favorite subjects are English and History. Outside of school I enjoy playing piano and doing volunteer work.

Q:  A commenter on the Pottstown Mercuryweb site says it's a conflict of interest for you to run because  your mom is a teacher and union member. Your reaction?

A: My mother is a teacher in another school district; there is no conflict of interest. We have differing views on the role teachers' unions play in the education system. One thing is for sure: I always hear both sides of the story when it comes to the union!

Q: Tell me about your family

A: My mother's name is Heather and my father's name is Jim. I have two siblings, Ian, 15, and Lily, 11.
