Ambler named one of 50 'smartest' cities

After a cognitive test of more than 3 million people in 478 cities, the tiny Montco borough of Ambler was ranked as one of Lumosity's 50 "Smartest Cities" in America.

No. 38, to be exact -- tied with the history-loving people of Williamsburg, Va., and a few spots ahead of Menlo Park, Calif., the home of Facebook, Intuit and Oracle.

Ambler came out with a score of 103.91, compared to the high score of 111.24 in Stanford, Ca. (my alma mater!)

The survey results excluded any town where fewer than 500 people took the test.  That means at least 9.5 percent of Ambler residents over age 15 participated -- impressive compared with some of the larger cities on the list.

The survey was conducted by the cognitive-training site Lumosity.  Participants were tested on speed, attention, flexibility, memory, and problem solving, then the site geo-maps their scores for an annual report.

The list, not surprisingly, is dominated by college towns, with Stanford at No. 1 and Princeton, N.J., at No. 2.  Philadelphia doesn't appear on the lists -- which could just mean Philadelphians are too busy to sit around playing cognition games on the computer.

In addition to Princeton and Ambler, State College, Pa. made the list at No. 14, Hillsborough, N.J., came in at No. 40, and Flemington, N.J., at  No. 44.
