Red Carpet Review: Golden Globes

By now you've heard fashion pundits gush about the old-school Hollywood glamour that dominated Sunday night's Golden Globe red carpet.

By now you've heard fashion pundits gush about the old-school Hollywood glamour that dominated Sunday night's Golden Globe red carpet.

Major standouts were Sarah Michelle Gellar's ocean blue tie-dyed Monique Lhuillier and Evan Rachel Wood's forrest green Gucci Premiere with its feathered skirts.

Speaking of details, those on Madonna's Reem Acra were jaw-dropping: the glittery leeves, the slight plunge of the neckline, the tailored waist. All of this led to the amazing skirt that began with a series of tiny green squares separated by the silver fabric. Each layer graduated into bigger and bigger squares to achieve volume of the chicest levels.

Good job, Material Girl.

Colors were unpredictable, but surprisingly remarkable, making this year's Golden Globes the most fashionably exciting they've been in years.

Presenter Paula Patton's bold yellow Monique Lhuillier was a straight talker. Best supporting actress winner Octavia Spencer's form-fitting Tadashi Shoji was a stunner in a pale lavender. And after last night's red carpet showing, we are sure that teal - wasn't Sofia Vergara's uber fishtailed Vera Wang a smoker? - is the new black.

My Top Three Red Carpet Gowns

1. Sarah Michelle Gellar in blue-tye dyed Monique Lhuillier. A bold color with an alluring silhouette. This dress featured major skirt drama and edge but still gave off a princess-like feel.

2. Lea Michele in body-skimming sleeved Marchesa. We loved this silver-toned sheath because the long sleeves gave the gown a demure feel, but the laser cut-outs made her red carpet look wholly sensual.

3. Angelina Jolie's Atelier Versace white sheath was just amazing. The design house freshened up the (somewhat overdone) one-shoulder silhouette with the fiery red foldover. The thigh-high split elongated Jolie's frame for fashion perfection.

Major looks of the evening

Navel-grazing V-s. We were surprised by, but not disappointed with, the number of sultry deep-v's. This detail gave the red carpet a sultry edge it hasn't had in years. See:

-Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci Premiere

-Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci

-Charlize Theron in Dior Couture.

A Touch of Black. Black was a sharp shade delighting more than it dominated. See:

-Claire Danes in J. Mendel

-Kate Winslet in Jenny Packham

A Touch of Red. Splashes of red - and in the case of Witherspoon an entire crimson gown - took plain silhouettes up a hot notch. See:

-Stacy Keibler in Valentino

-Resse Witherspoon in Zac Posen

-Natalie Portman in Lanvin

Metallic Winners. Metallics took a turn for the richer in these sparkling grey dresses. They were futuristic and boldly feminine. See:

-Nicole Richie in Julien MacDonald

-Madonna in Reem Acra.

Flesh Tones. These have dominated the red carpet for the last two years now, but the nude look was amped up when coupled with claret lips. See:

-Shailene Woodley in Marchesa.

-Kate Beckinsale in Roberto Cavalli
