Michelle Obama is amazing in ruby red Jason Wu inaugural gown

First Lady Michelle Obama wore a custom, ruby red Jason Wu chiffon and velvet gown Monday night at the Inaugural Balls. That dress was fierce. The halter top was a great choice to show off Mrs. Obama's sculpted arms and back. The waistline was in the perfect place and the color was radiant. Alicia Keys is right, "The Obamas are on fire."

Which Inaugural gown designed by Jason Wu do you like better?

First Lady Michelle Obama wore a custom, ruby red Jason Wu chiffon and velvet gown Monday night to the inaugural ball.

Her dress was fierce. The halter top was a great choice to show off Obama's sculpted arms and back. The waistline was in the perfect place while the color choice was radiant. Alicia Keys had it right - "Obama's on fire."

"I can't believe it. It's crazy," Wu told The New York Times Monday night. "To have done it once was already the experience of my life. To have a second time is tremendous."

Wu collaborated with jewelry designer Kimberly McDonald on the gown's jeweled neckline. And on the First Lady's finger was a handmade diamond ring by McDonald. Obama selected shoes by Jimmy Choo - a comfortable, yet-I-can-still-dance-heel. And on her left arm were stacked bracelets - the latest in bold accessories style.  The splendid Jason Wu gown - as well the Thom Browne coat and dress from Monday morning's public, swearing-in ceremony - will be donated to the National Archives.

Four years ago, Mrs. Obama chose a white chiffon one shouldered gown by Jason Wu when her husband, President Barack Obama was first sworn into office. Since then, Wu has reveled in his successes by designing a sold-out-on-the-first day Target line, in addition to emerging as a household name in fashion - a major feat for a young, independent designer.

Michelle Obama, clearly a big fan of the 30-year-old designer, was introduced to Wu by Vogue's Andre Leon Tally. She also wore a black and white sheath by Jason Wu during a 2008 interview with Barbara Walters.

In Michelle Obama's eyes, Oscar da la Renta has nothing on Jason Wu - and that's refreshing.

In all, Monday was quite a fashion day: Allentown-bred designer Thom Browne went from a not-so-known, tight-fitting men's suit designer to the man behind the amazing swearing in ceremony coat. J. Crew continued to receive its Obama family due, and Kate Spade New York got the nod from 11-year-old Sasha Obama.

I think all of the first family's sartorial choices today worked. They were appropriate, celebratory, yet fun and representative of what the White House is - FORWARD. As for the ruby gown, it was the perfect choice for FLOTUS. I wanted her to veer in this fiery direction years ago.  We love that she keeps us guessing when it comes to her choice in designers.

how funny the way the lib press goes ga-ga over this woman! Don't they realize they lose all credibility when they automatically come out in favor of her every move, her every word, her every new look, when they did none of the above for any of her predecessors in the past 50 years. Seriously, is she Halle Berry or something? Beyonce? She's average-looking at best, but we all need to fall in and crown her the most beautiful woman we've all ever seen.

The over-compensation for this woman because she is black is embarrassing to all black women, trust me. Just cover her as you would anyone else. The idolatry is truly laughable.

"and representative of what the White House is - FORWARD."

If FORWARD means highest deficits in history, worst debt in history, more on welfare than ever before, terrible unemployment, subverting the Constitution with powers not afforded to him via Libya, drone strikes, appointments while the Senate is in session and the Dream Act, food and gas prices at incredibly high levels that are not coming down and lying to us about Benghazi for weeks on end...then PLEASE, CAN WE STOP MOVING FORWARD. I can't take any more forward.

No, she isn't Beyonce or Halle Berry - thank God. She is a real woman, not one nipped and tucked and photoshopped on magazine covers. She is also attractive and in this dress she looks absolutely stunning.

She looks bad in high waist lines that accent her pear shape. Her makeup was in appropriate for a middle aged woman. Tired of fashion critics giving her a pass because they agree with her politics. The coat she wore on Pennsylvania Avenue made her look like a walking Christmas tree. Horrible.

History has an awful track record of the fate of nations that idolize their leaders.

She does have a sense of style and it does not have to be all designers either. I like what she wears and she wears everything well. Wish I had her arms.

I like this dress and a lot of the other outfits she has worn over the years, but I agree that the coat she wore on Pennsylvania Avenue back in 2008 should never have come off the rack.

The dress is great! Not big on the bangs. As far as her choice of clothing for the ceremony I did not care for it. But the kids and her mother looked great. You have to see the white dress from 2008 up close. It was beautiful. I can't wait to see this one.Lulu I agree with what you said 100%

About this blog
I’m a Libra so I’m all about pretty things. We of the scales sign know what we like, and our standards are high. So I can’t help but love fashion – one day I will get that Diane von Furstenberg wrap and those Christian Louboutin shoes. And fragrances? My favorite right now is Chanel Mademoiselle. As for makeup, can we say MAC? So let’s thank the Greek goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, that a true fashionista can find everything she needs right here in Philly. I’ve covered fashion here for six years, and I have traveled to New York, Los Angeles and Paris to write about local and national designers. Let me tell you, there is no place where people wear midnight Eagles green or Phillies red with such wild abandon as they do on the west side of the Ben Franklin Bridge. Sound familiar? This blog is for you. Reach Elizabeth at ewellington@phillynews.com.
