First family keeping it regal at the Inauguration in blues and purples

Blues and Purples. Blues and Purples.

These are the fashion colors of  Inaguration 2013.

As the day goes on, we see more and more of this fashionable first family.

Sasha in a thick, shades-of-purple-striped dress - with pockets by Kate Spade New York and Malia in a long sleeved blue dress by J.Crew. While FLOTUS keeps it sassy and modern in a shrunken, electric blue cardigan - that we think she wore with the Reed Krakoff dress on Sunday's swearing in -  over the Thom Browne  jacquard dress.

As a family, the blues and purples made the Obamas look majestic, even subdued this weekend.

Their rich-hued coats were statement pieces, unlike the candy-colored outerwear that merely complimented the dresses they wore four years ago. Back then Michelle Obama's lime-green suit by Isabel Toledo said 'We're new,' and the blues and purples — historically the colors of royalty — send a message that they've settled into their roles.

Speaking of blues, this weekend the first family also wore shades of blue — in the blue room. The family wore contrasting tights and gloves, so the simple cuts and deep colors popped with pizzazz.
"I do think the whole, overall tonal blue was really nicely done," said Clara Henry, director of the fashion program at Philadelphia University.  "There was a serenity and a calmness."
